Today’s subject matter is a response to a colleague and friend who approached me with questions regarding an interesting group assignment she was giving to her class. Her questions addressed important features of what is known in the literature as “cooperative learning”, an important learning strategy to which we are devoting this issue and the next.

How To Encourage Preclass Reading: The Web-Based Discussion, Aziza Ellozy

Faculty Journal Articles

No one would argue that in-class discussions improve when students read and think about their texts before class. But one of the most common questions that I have been asked by several faculty members is: “How do you get students to read the assigned texts before coming to class?” This is not a unique problem with AUC students, and a very similar question (“How to get students to prepare for class”), posted on a discussion list of a faculty development site on the internet, elicited a large number of responses.

Education Technology

This report presents some early evaluation evidence on the effectiveness and impact of the implementation of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI). The goal of the Year One evaluation, which is being conducted by the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI), is to provide policymakers and practitioners with information that will assist them in determining whether or not, and to what degree, the vision and goals of the MLTI are being achieved. The Year One design is focusing primarily on the students who entered seventh grade in September 2002, and their teachers and schools.

The MEPRI evaluation team has focused …

The Jeffcare Preceptor Model For Asthma: A Primary Care Physician Tutorial Training Model, Jeffrey L. Lenow, Robert Bales, Stanton N. Smullens

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

The societal and economic impact of asthma is a well-documented phenomenon in this country. Despite improved knowledge and techniques of care, there have been signs of worsening morbidity/mortality and a seeming disconnect between physician and patients as regards communication of care strategies. In an attempt to fashion innovative educational strategies to enhance primary care physician (PCP) and caregiver efficiencies in improving patient outcomes (clinical and financial), the "Preceptor" model of one-to-one PCP/asthma specialist has been developed. Review of utilization and prescribing data demonstrates a clear pattern of statistically significant cost improvement in the aggregate care setting, as well as improved …

Seven Principles For Good Practice In Undergraduate Education, Aziza Ellozy Feb 2003

Seven Principles For Good Practice In Undergraduate Education, Aziza Ellozy

Faculty Journal Articles

The Seven Principles, as they are called, were first published in 1987, by Arthur Chickering and Zelda Gamson, in a study supported by the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE), the Association of American Colleges (ACE) and the Johnson and Lilly Foundations. These principles were extracted from decades of research on learning in higher education. They were a huge success then, have continued to be refined, and are used in many ways since. Here we are including the condensed version of the principles with the hope that these principles will stimulate discussion and action to enhance student learning.

Perceptions Of Nebraska School Leaders Toward The Use Of Digital Portfolios In The Teacher Selection Process, Paul Allan Clark Feb 2003

Perceptions Of Nebraska School Leaders Toward The Use Of Digital Portfolios In The Teacher Selection Process, Paul Allan Clark

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to examine Nebraska School administrators' perceptions of digital portfolios in the teacher selection process. The digital portfolio can become another tool that school administrators use to help with the teacher selection process. Before universities or individual students spend a great deal of time and resources in creating and developing a digital portfolio plan, it is important to study the perceptions of the school administrators who may be using the digital portfolio in the teacher selection process. It is important to note whether they perceive a digital portfolio as useful and, if so, what contents …

Education In Costa Rica: Best Practices And Beyond, Trey Fitch Jan 2003

Education In Costa Rica: Best Practices And Beyond, Trey Fitch

Perspectives In Learning

Costa Rica is considered to be the most developed of the Central American countries because it has a relatively high Gross Domestic Product per capita as well as best indicators of life expectancy at birth, infant mortality rate, and adult literacy rate (United Nations Development Program, 1999). Much of this success has been attributed to its progressive education system. Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world to exist without a national military system, consequently, more money can be diverted into educational programs. The adult literacy rate is near 95% and rivals the United States where the …

Early Intervention With Children At Risk Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders: A Critical Examination Of Research Methodology And Practices, Peggy P. Hester, Heather M. Baltodano, Robert A. Gable, Stephen W. Tonelson, Jo M. Hendrickson Jan 2003

Early Intervention With Children At Risk Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders: A Critical Examination Of Research Methodology And Practices, Peggy P. Hester, Heather M. Baltodano, Robert A. Gable, Stephen W. Tonelson, Jo M. Hendrickson

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

Children's behavior problems pose challenges to families, schools, and society. The research literature argues that early detection/intervention is the most powerful course of action in ameliorating these problems in children at risk of emotional/behavioral disorders. However, specifying precisely what constitutes a quality program of early intervention is not a simple task. Current conceptualizations suggest that successful early intervention cannot be unidimensional in nature, but must consist of a complex series of interactions and transactions that synergistically serve to nurture and enhance both the development of the child and family. In this paper, we reviewed the accumulated research to learn more …
