Improving African American Males’ Academic And Social Success Through Implementation Of An Alternative Classroom Setting, Kenneth E. Daniels Jr Jan 2004

Improving African American Males’ Academic And Social Success Through Implementation Of An Alternative Classroom Setting, Kenneth E. Daniels Jr

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In school year 2001, African American males at Swainsboro Elementary School in Swainsboro, Georgia, comprised 51% of total discipline referrals. Numbers were even higher in 2002 and 2003, those being 58% and 70%, respectively. Studies suggested that African American males are the most at-risk group in modern society because of lack of role models, lack of cultural identity, and lack of appropriate social skill development that would reduce social conflicts.

The intervention model contained in this applied dissertation addressed the areas of conflict resolution and social skills development, cultural awareness, and mentoring. Participating students were placed in an alternative setting …

Professional Development And Turnover In Early Care And Education: Working Toward Solutions By Increasing Enrollment In A Professional Development Program, Sandra L. Duncan Jan 2004

Professional Development And Turnover In Early Care And Education: Working Toward Solutions By Increasing Enrollment In A Professional Development Program, Sandra L. Duncan

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Teachers’ educational backgrounds and professional development are positive predictors of program quality while teacher turnover is a negative predictor of program quality. Recent research suggests a significant link between teacher turnover and opportunities for professional development. The supposition is that, if the early childhood field could increase the quality of professional development training, then the level of teacher turnover could be reduced. Therefore, nonparticipation in professional development training opportunities is a critical issue in the early childhood industry.

This research study examined why early childhood practitioners are not enrolling in the professional development program opportunity that was published in a …

A Program To Train Veteran Teachers As Mentors For Beginning Teachers, Sherritta Campbell

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem addressed in this applied dissertation was that the Orange County Induction Program did not provide districtwide training, nor was there a method to select and pair mentors with teachers. The purpose of this applied dissertation was to enhance the Orange County Induction Program by developing a training component that would prepare veteran teachers to be mentors for beginning teachers. This component contains criteria not only for training mentors, but also for selecting and pairing mentors with beginning teachers based upon their areas of need in the field of education. The development research methodology was used for this applied …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The current study was conducted to examine the effects of telephone intervention on arthritis self-efficacy, depression, pain and fatigue in older adult patients in different clinical settings. Eighty-five subjects from two clinics were randomly assigned to either the control (n = 45) or intervention (n = 40) groups. The study was a mixed quantitative/qualitative design. Each subject completed several pre-tests including the Arthritis Self-Efficacy (ASE) scale, the Geriatric Depression scale (GDS), and numeric rating scales for both pain and fatigue. Distance learning can offer a solution to a long-standing challenge of undergraduate education: how to assign an appropriate amount of work to each student, and how to assess this work efficiently. In this paper I describe the Depository of Repetitive Internet-based probLems and Lessons (DRILL), an online system for providing education and assessment for precalculus, which can substitute for routine problems given in homework and as exam questions. Its special features include:

  • adaptive testing,
  • on-the-fly question generation,
  • instant assessment,
  • context-sensitive help,
  • question balancing, and
  • two-dimensional test design.

Management Textbooks As Propaganda, Kim S. Cameron, R. Duane Ireland, Robert N. Lussier, J. Randolph New, Stephen P. Robbins

Management Faculty Publications

Are management textbooks propaganda? Do textbook authors write to advance the interests of a particular group or groups (such as employees, organizations, and/or society)? Do they write to present the theory and research of the academic discipline? Do they write primarily to produce a product that consumers (faculty and students) will buy in sufficient numbers and at a price that will yield financial profit? This article explores these and related questions by asking four well-established management textbook authors - Kim Cameron, Duane Ireland, Bob Lussier, and Steve Rabbins - to react to the metaphor of "management textbooks as propaganda or …

Changes In Student Teachers' Perceptions Of Stress During The Student Teaching Semester, Connie L. Schaffer Dec 2003

Changes In Student Teachers' Perceptions Of Stress During The Student Teaching Semester, Connie L. Schaffer

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in the perceptions of stress during the student teaching semester. The pervasive theory regarding the changing stress of student teachers was developed by Fuller (1969). Fuller's developmental conceptualization theory involved three stages of concern or stress: (1) pre-teaching, non-concerns, (2) early-teaching phase, self-concerns and task concerns, and (3) late concerns, impact concerns. This study examined self-concerns, task concerns, and impact concerns and expanded the Fuller (1969) model to also include personal and career concerns.

Indicators Of Teacher Collaboration In Texas Public High Schools, Michael James Mcclure

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The study employs both quantitative and qualitative data to extend the work of Rosenholtz (1991) with public elementary schools and the work of Hickey (1994) with public secondary schools in trying to assess the extent to which four pre-defined socio-organizational factors predict teacher collaboration in public schools. The four socio-organizational factors include: teacher certainty about a technical culture and their instructional capability; shared instructional goals; teacher involvement in decision making about instructional matters; and teacher involvement in team teaching. The study also investigates the hypothesis that the academic departments in public secondary schools provide structures that more nearly approach the …

This was a single subject study with the A-B-A-B across settings withdrawal design. This design was selected because the subject has comorbidity issues, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Mental Retardation (MR). Differences In Privacy Policies Among Commercial, Educational And Governmental Web Sites: A Cross-Sectional Content Analysis, Rashad Bayramov

Theses

The present study investigates the differences in the way commercial, educational and governmental Web sites communicate their informational privacy practices through the privacy policies posted on the Web. Specifically, the research identifies differences in the coverage of the Fair Information Practice principles within the analyzed privacy policies. The study suggests that the sharpest dissimilarity exists in the coverage of the principles of Access (allowing Web users to review and update the data collected about them) and Security (protecting users' personal information during transmission and subsequent storage), where commercial sites greatly outnumber educational and governmental sites. However, governmental and educational sites …
