Factors Associated With Retention Rates In Career And Technical Educat, Jo Ann Whiteman Jan 2004

Factors Associated With Retention Rates In Career And Technical Educat, Jo Ann Whiteman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined retention rates in courses from Fall 1997 through Fall 2003 within web-based courses in a CTE teacher preparation program at the University of Central Florida to …

Achievement Test Scores Of African American Students Attending Magnet And Non-Magnet Schools, Sadie M. Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any statistically significant differences among the reading and math scores of African American students attending magnet and non-magnet schools in a large urban school district. This study involved a posttest-only design. Groups were not randomly assigned, but rather assigned to the two groups based on their classification as magnet or non-magnet. Thus, this study was a quasi-experimental posttest-only design with the non-magnet schools assigned to that group based on the school's demographic variables matching the schools in the magnet group. A two-sample t-test was the statistical procedure used for …

Facilitating The Transition Into Middle School And High School, Kathleen M. Cauley, Donna Jovanovich

MERC Publications

Making a transition to a new school causes anxiety for students and can challenge the coping skills of many adolescents, especially those at risk. Typically the move to a new school includes changes in school climate, school size, peer relationships, academic expectations, and degree of departmentalization. When adolescents move into middle school or high school, the anxiety is complicated further by other normative changes like puberty, social and emotional changes, the importance of peer relationships, and the development of higher order cognitive skills. Students who experience the stresses of numerous changes often have lower grades and decreased academic motivation, and …

Legislating Accountability: Standards, Sanctions, And School District Reform , Aaron J. Saiger Jan 2004

Legislating Accountability: Standards, Sanctions, And School District Reform , Aaron J. Saiger

Faculty Scholarship

The “New Accountability” movement in American education purports to catalyze improvement in American education by setting clear state standards for academic performance, measuring performance against those standards, and disseminating information about results. This Article argues that the potential of state accountability programs lies not in their imposition of standards but in their imposition of a sanction - the disestablishment of school districts, which entails unseating the local superintendent and school board and replacing them with state officials or their designees - that is extremely painful for the targeted district but is also painful for states to impose. The first Part …

Quality Management In Australian Higher Education : A Critical Review, Trudi Cooper

Quality management in higher education is a politically contentious issue in Australia. as it is in North America, New Zealand, and many European countries. The Australian government has instituted a quality management system for higher education that it claims will improve university efficiency, accountability and quality. Critics assert that the current quality management system is detrimental to universities and undermines the capability of universities to deliver maximal benefits to individuals and to society. Evaluation of the basis of conflicting claims is necessary to enable decisions about the usefulness of current practices and decisions about whether existing quality management arrangements should …

The Development Of A Human Resources Plan At The Alabama School Of Fine Arts, April Lufkin Miller

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to develop a human resources plan for the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Presently, the school does not have a unified plan which addresses the major areas of human resources: hiring, evaluation and retention. While the school did have some procedures in place dealing with the wide topic of human resources, it was not regarded as a particularly significant field.

In the past year ASFA has become an independent school system. This new status presents the opportunity to create and implement policies and procedures which will enable the school to select, rate and reward its …
