Epistemology And Education: An Incomplete Guide To The Social-Epistemological Issues, Harvey Siegel
Epistemology And Education: An Incomplete Guide To The Social-Epistemological Issues, Harvey Siegel
Philosophy Articles and Papers
Recent work in epistemology has focused increasingly on the social dimensions of knowledge and inquiry. Education is one important social arena in which knowledge plays a leading role, and in which knowledge-claims are presented, analyzed, evaluated, and transmitted. Philosophers of education have long attended to the epistemological issues raised by the theory and practice of education (along with the moral, metaphysical, social-political, and mind/language issues so raised). While historically philosophical issues concerning education were treated alongside other philosophical issues, in recent times the former set of issues have been largely neglected by philosophers working in the core areas of the …

Making Inclusion Work In Rural Southeast Texas, Fara M. Goulas Ph.D., Lula J. Henry Ph.D., Kimberly Griffith Ph.D.
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
Inclusion is a common term and everyday practice in two rural schools in Southeast Texas. A consortium based on a collaborative endeavor between the regional educational service center, the local university, and two rural school districts was established with a common goal, an effective general education environment, and pedagogical sound instruction for students in inclusive settings. Data was collected to assess the impact of the Inclusion Project. Results indicated an increase in positive attitudes toward the concept of inclusion.
Self-Determination And Student Involvement In Standards-Based Reform, Michael L. Wehmeyer, Sharon Field, Bonnie Doren, Christine Mason
Self-Determination And Student Involvement In Standards-Based Reform, Michael L. Wehmeyer, Sharon Field, Bonnie Doren, Christine Mason
Center for Self-Determination and Transition
Promoting self-determination has become "best practice" in the education of students with disabilities. We synthesize the decade's work in this area as a foundation for considering issues pertaining to promoting self-determination in light of the current educational context. We particularly examine the role of promoting self-determination in light of federal standards-based reform initiatives. We conclude that school reform efforts provide an opportunity to infuse instruction in self-determination into the education programs of all students, including students with disabilities. Many state and local standards include a focus on component elements of self-determined behavior and promoting self-determination enables students to perform more …

No Direct Translation : The Other Immigrants In A Mexican Community At An American School, J. Eric Gross
No Direct Translation : The Other Immigrants In A Mexican Community At An American School, J. Eric Gross
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In this action research project the author employed a qualitative, case study approach to interview seven parents/guardians of extreme language minority students who attended the elementary school at which he worked. Because the community was composed of mostly Mexican immigrants, the needs of those students whose first language is neither English nor Spanish were often overlooked. Both professional and popular literature are reviewed in the relevant areas: language diversity and policies, demographic trends in the U.S., relative effectiveness of language programs in schools, transfer of skills from L1 to L2, culture's effects on learning, comparative learning styles, SES's effects on …

Five Things Most People Believe About American Education That Are Wrong, David E. Drew
Five Things Most People Believe About American Education That Are Wrong, David E. Drew
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Will Rogers said, "People's ignorance isn't the problem; it's what they know for sure that isn't true." One reason that reform of our educational system often fails is that every politician and voter holds strong opinions about American schools. After all, they all went through the school system. Some of those opinions are simply wrong.

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes and beliefs of preservice teachers concerning inclusive education for students with severe disabilities. Individual interviews were conducted with 35 preservice teachers to determine their attitudes and beliefs concerning inclusion of students with severe disabilities and to examine the factors that influenced these attitudes and beliefs. Following qualitative data analysis procedures, findings indicated that the preservice teachers were relatively evenly divided on their opinions about where students with severe disabilities should receive educational services. The most significant finding of this study was that the preservice teachers attributed the underlying basis of …

Learning To Persevere: The Popular Teachings Of Tendai Ascetics, Stephen G. Covell
Learning To Persevere: The Popular Teachings Of Tendai Ascetics, Stephen G. Covell
Comparative Religion Publications
This paper introduces the teachings of three contemporary practitioners of Tendai Buddhism. I argue that the study of Japanese Buddhism has focused on doctrine and the past to the detriment of our understanding of contemporary teaching. Through an examination of the teachings of contemporary practitioners of austerities, I show that practice is drawn on as a source more than classical doctrine, that conservative values are prized, and that the teachings show strong similarities to the teachings of the new religions, suggesting a broad-based shared worldview.

Outcomes Of The American Occupational Therapy Foundation's Curriculum-Mentoring Project, Ingrid Mary Provident
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the outcomes of a year long formal curriculum-mentoring project sponsored by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation. Five occupational therapy faculty groups were selected through a competitive application process and paired with mentors to assist in curriculum change. The experiences of each of the teams were studied using multiple methods of data collection, including semi-structured interviews conducted in person and via telephone, a mailed questionnaire, and bi-monthly electronic journal entries. The process and outcomes of two representative cases are reported in this qualitative, critical case study analysis. A two part content analysis yielded information that addressed each of …
Reform Or Retrenchment: Single Sex Education And The Construction Of Race And Gender, Verna L. Williams
Reform Or Retrenchment: Single Sex Education And The Construction Of Race And Gender, Verna L. Williams
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
As parents, policymakers, and educators search for solutions to the crisis in the nation's public schools, single sex education emerges time and again as a promising strategy, particularly for African American students. This article argues that, in order to comprehend fully the implications of single sex schooling in inner city schools, examining the history of sex-based and race-based segregation in education is essential.
History demonstrates that sex and racial segregation in education has supported gender and hierarchies and the attendant subordination of African Americans and white women. For example, when public education became available for Blacks, its primary purpose was …
