A Comparative Investigation Of The Effects Of Frequent Testing Upon Achievement In Secondary Advanced Algebra, John Thomas Fullerton Aug 1971

A Comparative Investigation Of The Effects Of Frequent Testing Upon Achievement In Secondary Advanced Algebra, John Thomas Fullerton

All Master's Theses

Relatively speaking, few studies have concerned themselves with the problem of frequent testing, and as Keys pointed out, empirical evidence, uncomplicated by differences in the amount of testing material employed, on the effects of frequent testing is, at best, scarce (14:427). Also many studies used tests and test results for direct instruction, thus introducing additional variables. Furthermore, the choice of subjects and disciplines has been limited, the better part being taken from college psychology and sociology classes or high school science classes. This investigation was not an attempt to modify previous experiments, nor was it an attempt to identify which …

Relationship Of Convergent And Divergent Teaching To Creative Performance, Robert Bruce Kibler Aug 1971

Relationship Of Convergent And Divergent Teaching To Creative Performance, Robert Bruce Kibler

All Master's Theses

This study investigated the effect on test scores on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Form A, resulting from convergent and divergent methods of teaching fifteen half-hour mini-lessons in social studies to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Results favored the Divergent Group, and their scores were more widely dispersed. Recommendations included a follow-up study, replication of the experiment with variations in the sample and treatments, and investigation of the possible utility of a two-score achievement test.

A Survey Of The Integration Of Exceptional Children In Regular Classrooms, Catherine A. Greene Jun 1971

A Survey Of The Integration Of Exceptional Children In Regular Classrooms, Catherine A. Greene

All Master's Theses

Educational practice in the past has been to segregate exceptional children by placing them in self-contained special education classrooms. Recently, however, this method has been questioned by leading special educators. Proponents of segregation of exceptional children admit to inadequacies in the present situation, but they argue that such inadequacies can be remedied and do not justify placing exceptional children in regular classrooms. Proponents of integration maintain that exceptional children live in a heterogeneous world and as adults will live and work in a heterogeneous world; therefore, these children should have a school setting that is like the world in which …

An Item Analysis Comparison Between Teaching And Achievement Testing In The Intermediate School Of Wapato, Washington, Norman M. Drake

All Master's Theses

The Intermediate building of the Wapato School District administered the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills twice during the school year. The primary purpose of this testing was to measure the annual growth in skills of each student. The ITBS was used to measure those skills gained between the fall and spring testing. The results of the comparison of the spring and fall testing reflected that students were not gaining a school year's advance on the test results for a school year's instruction. The study was undertaken to determine the appropriateness of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills to the course …

The Effects Of Seating Position And Program Content On Student Learning While Watching Instructional Television, Patricia L. Kent Apr 1971

The Effects Of Seating Position And Program Content On Student Learning While Watching Instructional Television, Patricia L. Kent

Student Work

People share a common concern about the education of children. The goal is to create an environment that will maximize learning, an environment where all distracting elements are eliminated. It is generally agreed that the physical conditions of a classroom have a great effect on learning. The student must be able to see and to hear. Lighting, acoustics, ventilation, furnishings, and room color are just a few of the many things that can influence the students' learning. These are important factors not only when the teaching image in in the form of a person in the room, but also when …

A Curriculum Guide For Senior High School Physical Education In The Council Bluffs Community School District, Conrad W. Rasmussen Feb 1971

A Curriculum Guide For Senior High School Physical Education In The Council Bluffs Community School District, Conrad W. Rasmussen

Student Work

It is the intention of this physical education curriculum guide to provide a meaningful program for the senior high students of the Council Bluffs Community High Schools. Each teacher should have the initiative and imagination to develop individual lesson plans and teaching methods. However, it has become obvious that a need for an established course outline is necessary to provide a maximum program in Physical Education for the Council Bluffs High School student. We want to eliminate the possibility that our physical education program could-be controlled by individual strengths or weaknesses. It is imperative that we develop a program that …

Stimulus Selection Under Conditions Of Free Choice By Preschool Children At Baseline And After Adaptation, Andrea Lyn Shields Jan 1971

Stimulus Selection Under Conditions Of Free Choice By Preschool Children At Baseline And After Adaptation, Andrea Lyn Shields

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The experiments reported in the present paper may be characterized as belonging to the general area of motivation research referred to as stimulus selection behavior. Stimulus selection behavior includes curiosity, exploratory, and manipulatory activities. Generally, the research in the area attempts to determine the relation between changes in the stimulus and changes in the measures of approach behavior in the subject (s). In this research, approach behavior is apparently unrelated to organic need conditions. The experiments presented in this paper were designed to determine a preschool child's stimulus preference as he entered the experimental setting, and whether that preference could …

Tort Liability Of Teachers And Administrators For Negligent Conduct Toward Pupils, Reynolds C. Seitz Jan 1971

Tort Liability Of Teachers And Administrators For Negligent Conduct Toward Pupils, Reynolds C. Seitz

Cleveland State Law Review

The real reason for this article is found in the recognition that good law is generally a guide to good conduct. School people ought to know as much about what the law dictates in respect to conduct toward children under their supervision as they know about the teachings of psychology. Before getting directly into the discussion, it seems appropriate to stress that there is nothing in tort law which makes teachers or admin- istrators the insurers of the safety of children. Accidents will continue to happen which cause injury to children in school. If, however, the teacher or administrator has …

Corporal Punishment In Schools: An Infringement On Constitutional Freedoms, Thomas J. Baechle Jan 1971

Corporal Punishment In Schools: An Infringement On Constitutional Freedoms, Thomas J. Baechle

Cleveland State Law Review

The doctrine of in loco parentis and the right of the teacher to inflict corporal punishment has a long history of acceptance. The doctrine itself has survived for centuries with no serious challenges to its validity or acceptability. The doctrine states that a teacher stands in the place of the parent and has the right to discipline his students, including the right to inflict corporal punishment for reasonable cause and in a reasonable manner. The basis of the doctrine is an assumption of the delegation of parental authority and an assumption of the correctness of the teacher's actions. A direct …
