The focus of this study wag to determine if women who report and women who do not report sexual harassment could be differentially described by a subset of the following variables: age, marital status, feminist ideology, frequency of behavior, perceived offensiveness, perceived outcomes, normative expectations. This study was based on a model for reporting sexual harassment by Brooks and Perot (1991) and extended the original test of this model by adding two variables, normative expectations and perceived outcomes, which were not tested by Brooks and Perot. This study examined whether there were significant differences in the manifest content of spontaneous and primed early recollections of women who have a positive body image and women who have a negative body image. The Manaster-Perryman Manifest Content Early Recollection Scoring Manual was used to score the early memories of participants. Participants in this study consisted of 94 women. Scores on the Body Shape Questionnaire were utilized to classify women into body image groups. Thirty-nine women were identified as having a positive body image; 55 women were identified as having a negative body image. Results indicated no significant differences between …

In this case study of a middle school team of teachers, I describe and interpret daily meeting conversations among one group of practitioners over the course of one school year. Through the lens of the social construction of reality, I examine processes of sharing and co-constructing aspects of professional knowledge in this setting.

This dissertation analyzes student texts about bodily violence written for Freshman English and advanced writing courses at the University of New Hampshire between 1994 and 1996. All the volunteers were white women, most aged 18-21. The project addresses four central questions: Why are students writing about these experiences? How are they writing about them? What assumptions inform teachers' responses to such essays? What larger cultural contexts shape how such experiences are represented and understood by students and teachers?

The little that has been written about expressions of religious experience in the field of Composition Studies focuses on the many ways religious belief places its adherents at a disadvantage in writing classrooms. We discuss in our journals and staffrooms only those religious conservatives who are most expressive of their beliefs. Many others sit in silence during discussions that may reveal anything of their beliefs, fearing to offend teachers and peers or to expose themselves to offenses from others. Similar to minority groups, women often possess inferiority feelings about themselves and have difficulty developing a positive view of womanhood. Womanist Identity Development is the stage-wise process by which women develop womanist attitudes, forming a positive gender identity. The stages are associated with specific attitudes about womanhood, including external negative definitions (i.e. societal stereotypes) and positive internal definitions. The goal of the study was to identify elements that encourage high school students to select the school-to-career curriculum. The study included elements from successful school-to-career programs, background of the history of vocational legislation, and an examination of motivation theories including goal-setting, needs satisfaction, and choice. A survey was administered to 175 students in four districts in Arkansas. Students were given open- and closed-response questions to determine their present interest in the school-to-career curricula and elements they considered motivational. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences between personality characteristics of female and male freshmen, engineering students. A secondary purpose was to ascertain whether personality characteristics of freshmen, engineering students were different from those of general collegiate students of the same sex. The Millon Index of Personality Styles (MIPS) was administered to a sample of 72 female and 86 male freshmen, engineering students at a private midwestern engineering institution. This study evaluated the relationship of six parent and eight teacher rating scales to the T.O.V.A. measures of Inattention, Impulsivity, Response Time and Variability. Subjects consisted of 88 children 6 through 14 years of age, referred by teachers and parents to a school psychologist in a small midwestern community for evaluation of ADHD symptomatology. These students attended school at four public elementary schools and three private religious elementary schools. Sixty-eight subjects were males and twenty subjects were females. Each child was administered the T.O.V.A. by a school psychologist. Parents filled out the BASC:PRS, CPRS-48, and the ADHD Rating Scale. Teachers …

The study investigated the concerns and perceptions of parents of children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD). Parental concerns regarding behaviors, skill deficits, and settings were identified as well as the helpfulness of interventions and professionals. The Parent Perception Opinionnaire for Parents of Children and Adolescents with ADHD was constructed. Data were collected from 112 members of a parent support group. The data were summarized according to ages 8 and less (primary), ages 9 through 11 (intermediate) and ages 12 through 17 (secondary). The exploration provided the background information about the unequal and segregated system of education which led to student uprisings in 1976. This study examined the relationship between early exposure to violence--both personal and community--and the later academic achievement of African American first time college students. The study incorporated several variables that were thought to impinge upon the academic achievement process. Specifically, those variables were divided into several groups: background factors (socioeconomic status, high school academic record, personal and community violence exposure), student characteristics (locus of control, educational aspirations and expectations), and university characteristics (campus safety, academic and social integration). Secondary teachers face the challenge of planning instructional activities that combine their own subject knowledge with information from textbooks and other forms of text to help students learn content material. This study explores preservice teachers' perceptions regarding literacy instruction within the context of teaching and learning content material. The participants are senior secondary education students enrolled in a content area literacy course at a regional university in the southeast. Case studies are constructed for six preservice teachers representing different content areas.
