Triggering Fear: The Relationship Between Party Affiliation, News Sources, And Gun Control, Gabriella J. Bartsch
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Freedom and democratic principles are our government's core and essential for upholding a democratic society. This paper considers the relationship between political identity, media consumption, and the fear of government restrictions on firearms within the United States. This study analyzes correlations between these variables using data from the Chapman Survey of American Fears, Wave 10. Among the interesting findings are that Republicans and conservatives are more likely to fear government restrictions on firearms than Democrats, Independents, and liberals. Another finding is that one's preferred news sources can influence beliefs toward policies, including those on firearm restrictions, and shape people's perceptions …

Artificial intelligence (AI) and data science are reshaping public policy by enabling more data-driven, predictive, and responsive governance, while at the same time producing profound changes in knowledge production and education in the social and policy sciences. These advancements come with ethical and epistemological challenges surrounding issues of bias, transparency, privacy, and accountability. This special issue explores the opportunities and risks of integrating AI into public policy, offering theoretical frameworks and empirical analyses to help policymakers navigate these complexities. The contributions explore how AI can enhance decision-making in areas such as healthcare, justice, and public services, while emphasising the need …
Comprehensive Strangulation Education For Health Care Practitioners, Jeanne Parrish
Comprehensive Strangulation Education For Health Care Practitioners, Jeanne Parrish
Leadership Connection
There is no formal strangulation assessment taught to health care practitioners resulting in missed injuries from strangulation and missed opportunities to intervene before violence can escalate in lethality.
The purpose of this project is to develop an educational program for health care practitioners on identifying Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and strangulation, assessing strangulation injuries, how to complete medico-legal documentation of the same and ethical intervention for the family affected by IPV.
IPV affects almost one third of families in the United States (US), and an estimated three women die in the US every day as a result of IPV. Women …

An Investigation Of Law Enforcement Officer Background And Personality: A Study Of The Effects Of Education And Time In Service On Personality Characteristics, Courtney A. Claiborne
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Within the last ten years, the actions of law enforcement officers have received increased attention, particularly in events involving disproportionate use of force. However, researchers and individuals should not generalize all law enforcement officers based on these incidents. In other words, the actions of law enforcement officers in these incidents should not be used as a basis to predetermine the actions of all law enforcement officers. Therefore, examining law enforcement officers' personalities and backgrounds is one way to understand individual police officers better. Through an exploratory research study, the researcher was able to examine the effect education and time in …

Disrupting The Cascade: Using Improvement Science To Mitigate Negative Outcomes Associated With Exclusionary Discipline Practices In Schools, Katelyn Singleton
Disrupting The Cascade: Using Improvement Science To Mitigate Negative Outcomes Associated With Exclusionary Discipline Practices In Schools, Katelyn Singleton
All Dissertations
The use of exclusionary discipline practices in schools has continued to increase since the advent of Zero Tolerance discipline policies in the 1990s. Research indicates that these practices are largely ineffective in addressing behavior, and result in detrimental outcomes for students and communities. This study focused on the use of Disciplinary Alternative Education Programs (DAEPs) as a form of exclusionary discipline. Using an improvement science design, the purpose of this study was to identify how DAEPs can be leveraged to mitigate negative outcomes associated with exclusionary discipline. Specifically, this study sought to understand how implementing explicit skill instruction and adult …
The Pervasiveness Of Censorship In American Prison Libraries, Brennen D. Stevens
The Pervasiveness Of Censorship In American Prison Libraries, Brennen D. Stevens
Library Scholars Manuscripts
In the United States, prison libraries serve a vital role in the rehabilitation of prisoners. Despite this, there are ongoing measures to withhold entire genres of literature from the hands of prisoners, restricting the abilities of prison libraries to provide educational lessons using sensitive topics. These book bans can occur between the local to state levels and are difficult for prisoners to appeal. The issues that this can cause are often out of view of the public, and can only be addressed by encouraging public engagement for change. This editorial attempts to engage with a general audience by providing an …
Money Matters To All Students, George Padilla, Michelle H. Abrego
Money Matters To All Students, George Padilla, Michelle H. Abrego
i.e.: inquiry in education
The question whether money matters in education strikes at the foundation of America’s democracy—an educated electorate. Despite decades of evidence that money does matter, the question still remains unanswered among many and even answered to the contrary of the evidence. It is important to fully understand that money does matter in American education, American lives, and America’s future and to increase awareness of political and social factors that undermine that money matters for all students to learn.
Recidivism In Mississippi: Causes, Impacts, And Solutions, Grace E. Brian
Recidivism In Mississippi: Causes, Impacts, And Solutions, Grace E. Brian
Honors Theses
Because the United States is home to the largest prison population in the world, finding solutions to reduce the rate at which prisoners return to prison is paramount to helping reduce crime. Assessments of how Mississippi, the state with the highest incarceration rate, engages with access to prison education, barriers to employment, and youth incarceration compared to the national, Southern, and non-southern averages will be explored to direct recidivism reduction solutions. Results showed that Mississippi had a slightly higher recidivism rate than the national average, had fewer barriers to employment, and a lower youth incarceration rate than the national average …

Dialectical Utopism In Architectural Praxis: A Critique And Vision For Spatial Revolution, Self Governance, And Social Transformation In Niger, Abdoulaye Idrissa
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
In January, amidst one of Niger's most turbulent periods of socioeconomic and political unrest, I departed from the chaos-laden streets that had become scenes of collapse and despair. As an architecture student, compelled by the urgency of the situation, I embarked on a journey to explore the transformative potential of architecture in the face of such crisis.
From the bustling streets filled with the disheartened faces of the unemployed to the frontline confrontations between government forces and disillusioned inhabitants, the disarray of law and order paints a stark picture of societal fragmentation. Yet, amidst this turmoil lies an opportunity for …

The Changing Nature Of Education In Youth Justice Centres In New South Wales (Australia), Laura Metcalfe, Cathy Little Dr, Garner Clancey Dr, David Evans Dr
Journal of Prison Education Research
Education is an important protective factor in preventing involvement in crime. For those young people that enter the youth justice system, and especially youth justice centres, education is a critical, but infrequently explored part of their time in custody following generally disrupted schooling experiences. There are currently six youth justice centres in New South Wales, Australia. Each of these centres have an Education and Training Unit which are schools funded by and staffed with Department of Education personnel. There is evidence that young people accessing these schools regard them very positively. However, this article, drawing on publicly available information, raises …

Juvenile Correctional Facility Programming, Abraham Ls Werner, April Terry
Juvenile Correctional Facility Programming, Abraham Ls Werner, April Terry
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Rehabilitative programs designed to reduce future offending have been utilized within communities as well as correctional facilities, including juvenile correctional facilities. The “What Works” literature has now provided clear guidance to correctional facilities on which programs are most effective in reducing recidivism (Andrews & Bonta, 2006). Generally, the metric for success is measuring rates of reoffending and/or new stents of incarceration. This poster outlines the What Works literature for youth, focusing on programs offered within juvenile correctional facilities. When evidence-based programs are utilized, youth are more successful upon reentering into society and also have decreases in future offending (Andrews et …

Childhood Discipline Disparities For African American And Latinx Students, Cierra Townsend
Childhood Discipline Disparities For African American And Latinx Students, Cierra Townsend
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
African American and Latinx students are disproportionality impacted by punitive discipline models including suspensions, detention, and expulsions. This disproportionality removes students from the education setting creating adverse social emotional, academic, and economic outcomes. Students who are suspended and expelled are more likely to have contact with the juvenile justice system and or to be pushed out of school into alternative settings. Therefore, punitive discipline leads to increased school-based pathways to the juvenile justice system (SPJJ), also known as the school the prison pipeline (STPP). Despite knowledge of these adverse outcomes, schools continue to utilize punitive discipline practices. School psychologists are …

Navigating Covid-19 And Racial Trauma As A Black Student At Predominantly White Institutions, Samantha Francois, Joan Blakey, Rae Stevenson, Timothy Walker, Curtis Davis
Psychology
Black students at predominantly White institutions (PWIs) contend with racial microaggressions that can lead to negative mental health and academic outcomes. The physical and mental health consequences of the novel coronavirus pandemic are well-known. What remains unknown is how targeted racial hate during a pandemic might have a compounded effect on Black essential workers. The current study examines how future essential workers in helping professions cope with dual crises as they navigate mostly White universities. Study participants were Black university students attending PWIs in the United States enrolled in social work, public health, or psychology programs during the 2020–2021 academic …

Study results showed that participants knew more after completing the curriculum but knew less one to five years after graduation. Overall, however, …
School-To-Prison Pipeline: The Importance Of Teachers’ And Administrators’ Perceptions Of Their Social Bonds With Students, Garrett Whitley
School-To-Prison Pipeline: The Importance Of Teachers’ And Administrators’ Perceptions Of Their Social Bonds With Students, Garrett Whitley
Student Theses and Dissertations
The increasing trend of Black and minority students being channeled from classrooms into the juvenile and criminal justice systems, known as the school-to-prison pipeline, presents a pressing concern in the U.S. educational landscape. This study sought to address the gap in understanding the perceptions of teachers and administrators regarding effective strategies to foster social bonds, which could deter students from this pipeline. Drawing from Hirschi’s social control theory, the research emphasized the importance of attachment between students and the educational system in preventing delinquent behaviors. Utilizing a qualitative narrative approach, this study explored the lived experiences of six administrators and …

Ameliorating School Experience With Restorative Practices, Faith Thompson-Lee
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental study was to explore the association between school success after the tier-one introduction of a three-tiered restorative practices program. To understand school success, student factors were examined using middle school data from a suburban school district located outside of a large metropolitan city in the northeastern part of the United States. These factors included achievement (Final GPA), attendance (Absences), and suspensions (In-school and Out-of-school) across racial groups. Separate multiple regressions were conducted for each school success factor on racial group for the 2021-2022 and the 2022-2023 school years. By this time, all district staff …

A Cultural Shift: Restorative Justice Relation On School Discipline And Educator Perception And Practices With Middle School Students, Hector Macias
A Cultural Shift: Restorative Justice Relation On School Discipline And Educator Perception And Practices With Middle School Students, Hector Macias
CGU Theses & Dissertations
As restorative justice practices (RJP) in educational environments remain relatively novel, there has been limited research on its long-term effectiveness. In districts that allocated substantial resources to RJP, reports from personnel suggest a direct correlation between RJP implementation and a decrease in suspensions, diminished truancy rates, and an overall improvement in school climates. Nevertheless, further investigation is essential, particularly at the middle school level, to explore the link between RJP and institutionalized, non-punitive, relationship-centered approaches. This research extended the knowledge base of disciplinary practices, delving into the educators’ perceptions of RJP on fostering a school-wide restorative ideology.

An Intersectional Examination Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Educational Outcomes In Children In The U.S., Josalie C. Condon
An Intersectional Examination Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Educational Outcomes In Children In The U.S., Josalie C. Condon
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Background: Research has found that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been shown to lead to a myriad of issues including struggling in school. The more ACEs a child experiences, the worse their outcome tends to be, including school outcomes. However, critics of ACE research have argued that not all ACEs weigh the same and intersectionality needs to be considered. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between ACEs and school outcome issues. These school outcome variables are analyzed, first with a binary ACE variable, then with ACE scale variable, to test whether more ACEs lead to worse outcomes. And, …

African American adolescent suicidality has become more prevalent, and urban school counselors are positioned uniquely to intervene. This research studied the overarching societal factors in the sociocultural, economic, and political spheres that influence increased suicidality behaviors in African American adolescents from the perspective of urban school counselors. The focus of this research was to hear the lived experiences of urban school counselors regarding the impact of racial discrimination on African American adolescent suicidality. The two theoretical frameworks that were used to support this study are the world-systems analysis theory and critical race theory. This study took a qualitative phenomenological approach …
Augmenting Back-Translation Decision Making With Latent Semantic Analysis: Predicting Expert Decisions With Semantic Similarity Scores From American Sign Language, Jared A. Embree
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focused on a novel improvement to the current method for adapting assessments into American Sign Language (ASL). Bilingual Deaf adults participated in back translations across the United States, and those back-translation decisions were assessed by human experts to judge similarity in meaning. Translations were compared to original text samples using two types of Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) models to compute semantic textual similarity (STS) scores, and to calculate weighted Youden Index (WYI) Scores. These scores were used to determine the ideal cutoff to be used when making judgments and compared to human expert decisions. The results revealed that …
