The Effect Of Social Class On First -Year College Student Engagement And Satisfaction, Susan M. Mospens

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social class is the hidden diversity on most college campuses. Although extensive research has demonstrated that social class is a strong predictor of access to college, retention, academic performance and college completion in higherEducation, little is known about the effect of social class on the college student experience as measured by student engagement and satisfaction. Grounded in Bourdieu's work on social and cultural capital, the premise of this study was to explore the interplay of campus culture and student social class culture. The goal was to identify aspects of the campus culture that impede or encourage engagement and satisfaction and …

An Analysis Of Faculty Perspectives On The Theory And Practice Of Academic Freedom, Robin R. West Jan 2008

An Analysis Of Faculty Perspectives On The Theory And Practice Of Academic Freedom, Robin R. West

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Academic freedom is a concept said to be poorly defined and misunderstood. Much of the literature on academic freedom suggests that the presumed professorial right is threatened by a variety of internal and external forces. This study examines the theory and practice of academic freedom within the context of instruction in the university classroom. The study attempts to determine if there is a difference between faculty perspectives about the theoretical constructs of academic freedom and its praxis in instructional practice. In other words, "this is what I believe academic freedom is and does, but here is what I have experienced." …

Factors Influencing Males To Teach At The Elementary Level: An Interview -Based Exploration Of The Thoughts And Rationale For Their Career Choice, Daniel J. Carter

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The minimal male presence serving asEducational leaders in today's elementary classrooms has been continuously noted by popular media during the last two decades. With these low numbers in the school environment, the mere presence of a male elementary teacher seems to inspire the general public to expect higher standards of performance of him, and thus, place greater value upon him. Despite the number of media reports seemingly demanding more male teachers in elementary classrooms, there are few empirical studies that document the male teachers' voice and clearly communicate why these men willingly choose to pursue a career where they continuously …

In a nation that is becoming increasingly diverse, the Hispanic population is the largest minority group in the country. There are more than two million English-language learners in the U.S. K-3 classrooms with Spanish accounting for almost 80% of the non-English …

Worksite Schools: A Study Of Cooperation Between Public Education And Private Business, D. Janell Dietz Jan 2008

Worksite Schools: A Study Of Cooperation Between Public Education And Private Business, D. Janell Dietz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The development of business/educational partnerships in the United States has accelerated in the last few years, fueled in large part by industry concerns over a projected scarcity of future workers who are effectively equipped for the demands of a workforce in an evolving technological environment. This has been accompanied by rising concern over parental choice in the matter of what schools their children will attend; Lankard (1995) has opined that in the new economy where school and work are intertwined, it is increasingly apparent that a dual approach to public school reform has appeal, and such partnerships will continue to …

Power To The Pupils: Children Speak Out About Their Experiences In Danish Schools, Karen Eisenhut Jan 2008

Power To The Pupils: Children Speak Out About Their Experiences In Danish Schools, Karen Eisenhut

Whittier Scholars Program

Denmark proclaims a strong commitment to the Nordic concept of en god barndom (the good childhood life), with the central tenets of democracy, egalitarianism, emancipation, cooperation, and solidarity. For instance, Danes recognize democracy as a fundamental value in their society. Researchers have acknowledged that democratic principales extend into schools and influence both the structure and the content of the educational system. Although literature and legislation in Denmark reveals this idea of a Lived democracy” in the school, most studies have been designed, carried out, and analyzed by adult researchers, with little opportunity for input from the actual participants– the children …

Using 'The Autobiography Of Malcolm X' To Teach Introductory Sociology, Brent D. Harger, Tim Hallett Jan 2008

Using 'The Autobiography Of Malcolm X' To Teach Introductory Sociology, Brent D. Harger, Tim Hallett

Sociology Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we make the case for using The Autobiography of Malcolm X to teach introductory sociology classes. While The Autobiography of Malcolm X is an autobiography and not a novel, we summarize the literature on using novels in sociology and compare this literature to our own experiences using autobiographies in the classroom. We then describe how autobiographies are particularly helpful for introducing students to the concept of the ‘‘sociological imagination’’ before highlighting this with an in-class exercise. Finally, we discuss student feedback and some of the drawbacks to using autobiographies and the extent to which these drawbacks can …

Outrageous State, Sectarianized Citizens: Deconstructing The ‘Textbook Controversy’ In The Northern Areas, Pakistan, Nosheen Ali Jan 2008

Outrageous State, Sectarianized Citizens: Deconstructing The ‘Textbook Controversy’ In The Northern Areas, Pakistan, Nosheen Ali

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper examines the ‘textbook controversy’ (2000-2005) that arose when the Pakistan state introduced new, overtly Sunni textbooks in the Northern Areas, and the local Shia population began to agitate for a more balanced curriculum. The conflict reached an acute stage during 2004-2005, as violent confrontations took place between Shia and Sunni communities, and a constant curfew paralyzed daily life in Gilgit for eleven months. I argue that the Shia mobilization against textbook Islam was not just a form of “sectarian” outrage; rather, it symbolized a broader political claim to inclusion in a context of long-standing regional subordination and religious …

Psychoeducational And Therapeutic Group Counseling For Central American Female Immigrants, Amy Dolores Deutsch Jan 2008

Psychoeducational And Therapeutic Group Counseling For Central American Female Immigrants, Amy Dolores Deutsch

Master's Theses and Capstones

There is a significant and increasing amount of Latinos immigrating to the United States. They face many challenges in successfully adapting to life in this country. These challenges are several and include cultural differences, premigration and migration trauma, economic hardship, lack of facility with the language, and attitudes of United States citizens toward immigrants. The needs of Latino immigrants are unique, and the costs of not addressing these needs are likely to be significant. As the United States becomes increasingly more racially and culturally diverse, it is encumbent upon those in the helping professions to prepare to serve a radically …

These resources included a large amount of money and print materials prepared by the Aboriginal Branch. The schools were asked to consult with the school community and area residents, including elders, to prepare strategies they believed would fulfill the …

Education And Transition To Work Among Youth In Maharashtra, International Institute For Population Sciences (Iips)

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The extent to which India will be able to successfully harness its demographic dividend depends significantly on the situation of its youth, notably on the levels of education and market-oriented skills they attain. In many states, youth have made progress on these fronts. Youth in Maharashtra have made considerable strides in terms of educational attainment, yet it is not clear that they are prepared for the challenges they will face in a globalized world. Looking at the current educational and employment situation of youth in Maharashtra, this policy brief argues that significant investments in terms of appropriate policies and programs …

Education For All: The Freedmen's Bureau Schools In Richmond And Petersburg, 1865 - 1870, Scott Britton Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the development of Freedmen's Bureau schools in Central Virginia at the end of the Civil War. Under the watchful eye of Ralza Manly, Superintendent of the Virginia Freedmen's Bureau education division, establishing schools for freed slaves faced innumerable challenges ranging from inadequate financial resources to hostile southern whites who opposed northern intervention into local affairs. Nevertheless, northern benevolent societies and hundreds of altruistic, yet paternalistic, educational missionaries converged on Richmond and Petersburg determined that education was essential if blacks were to achieve true freedom and become self-reliant and independent. While the Bureau devoted much of its energy …

Growing Up Biracial And Gay In The Deep South: Living Between The Color/Gender Lines, Theresa S. Hoogacker

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is a critical inquiry into the stories of three generations of women living in the South. Through the stories my mother, my daughter and I have lived through, I critically reflect on my experience of being a first generation doctoral student growing up in-between the color lines of Black and White and raising a biracial and gay daughter growing up in the deep South. Building on the works of Kincheloe and Pinar (1991), Frantz Fanon (1963), Maria Root (1996), Henry Giroux (1992), Paul Gilroy (1993b), Phillion, He & Connelly (2005), and He & Phillion (2008), I explore the ways …
