Minnie Liddell's Forty-Year Quest For Quality Public Education Remains A Dream Deferred, Kimberly Jade Norwood Jan 2012

Minnie Liddell's Forty-Year Quest For Quality Public Education Remains A Dream Deferred, Kimberly Jade Norwood

Scholarship@WashULaw

This Article is a historic account of the hopes and dreams that a mother had for her children and her efforts to make those hopes and dreams come true. The mother, Minnie Liddell, never imagined, when she first became a mom in 1959, or years later after the birth of her fifth child, or even after she filed a lawsuit against a city school district, that she would become a pioneer and icon in the school desegregation history of St. Louis, Missouri. She really only wanted a quality public education for her children, for black children, for all children. This …

Danger In Familiarities : Sex Education And Adolescent Sexuality In The Early 20th Century, Sadie Johnson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In this paper I focus on the affects of sex education on adolescent sexuality from 1910 until 1940. Using Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Model of Human Development, I examine how different levels of society changed sex education and the adolescent experience. I analyze texts, movies, and theories of the early 20th century to find that sex education’s had no specific affect on the adolescent experience from 1910 until 1940.

“What Do You Do With A Student Like That?”: Defiance, Disrespect And Lack Of Motivation In The High School Classroom, Cynthia Stallard Glass Jan 2012

“What Do You Do With A Student Like That?”: Defiance, Disrespect And Lack Of Motivation In The High School Classroom, Cynthia Stallard Glass

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

Educators face multiple forms of misbehavior in the classroom on a regular basis. Quantitative data in the academic literature indicates that some subgroups, particularly minority students, lower income students and boys, face higher rates of disciplinary actions than their peers. Whether this indicates that those students misbehave more often, whether their actions are perceived differently by educators, or whether they are punished more harshly for their misbehavior are issues that are not well-settled by academic research. This research project addresses this gap in the literature, by addressing how the overrepresentation of subgroups may occur and by addressing the decision-making process …

All Those Like You: Identity Aggression And Student Speech, Ari Ezra Waldman Jan 2012

All Those Like You: Identity Aggression And Student Speech, Ari Ezra Waldman

Articles & Chapters

Online and face-to-face harassment in schools requires a coordinated response from the school, parents, students, and government. In this Article, I address a particular subset of online and face-to-face harassment, or identity-based harassment. Identity-based aggressors highlight a quality intrinsic to someone’s personhood and demean it, deprive it of value, and use it as a weapon. They attack women, racial minorities, religious minorities, and other traditionally victimized groups. And, as such, they attack not only their particular victims but also their victims’ communities. Identity-based aggressors com- mit a constitutional evil not only because their behavior interferes with victims’ access to education, …

Dissertations and Theses

"The following study looks at the academic performance of black students and how variations in their social context can trigger high or low achievement. In order to analyze the differing outcomes in student performance, I look at their social context on the basis of 3 contextual categories: (1) home characteristics (e.g., parent background, number of guardians, and/or locale) (2) schools characteristics (e.g., enforced school policies, school location, and/or class size) (3) student behavioral characteristics (e.g., student report cards, at10tiveness, and/or at10dance). Also, this study considers the po10tial of using factors among high performing students to impact low impact low performing …

Analyzing Levels Of Feedback Delivered By Cooperating Teachers And Supervisors In A Teacher Internship: A Case Study, James Badger

Georgia Educational Researcher

This research analyzed the feedback delivered by cooperating teachers and university supervisors in an internship, and reports how student teachers perceived the feedback they received during debriefing sessions with their mentors. Hattie and Timperley’s (2007) framework for conceptualizing effective feedback was used to analyze cooperating teachers’ and field supervisor’ assessment of the student teachers’ classroom instruction. Findings from two surveys, documents, and interviews revealed a preponderance of feedback that was devoted to instruction and classroom management with a relative paucity of feedback dedicated to the processing of instruction, consideration of student learning, and development of self-reflection in the student teachers. …

Making Education Accessible: A Dual Case Study Of Instructional Practices, Management, And Equity In A Rural And An Urban Ngo School In Pakistan, Zafreen Jaffery

Dissertations and Theses

Two- thirds of Pakistan's primary aged children are enrolled in school and less than one-third complete fifth grade. Decades after the inception of the goal of primary education for all of its children, the state is unable to fulfill its promise of providing access to universal primary education. The failure of the government to provide for a system that ensures equitable opportunities for all of its children has resulted in individuals, for-profit organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) intervening to fill the void. In particular, international donor agencies (IDAs) have come forward to provide financial aid and personnel support for primary …

The Most Interesting Place: The Eastern Mediterranean And American Cultural Knowledge, Gregory Wiedeman Jan 2012

The Most Interesting Place: The Eastern Mediterranean And American Cultural Knowledge, Gregory Wiedeman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

This study addresses how nineteenth-century Americans perceived the lands of the Eastern Mediterranean. The project rests upon a detailed examination of American primary school geography textbooks that enjoyed widespread circulation during the century. The lack of an effective education apparatus in the period rendered American students incredibly reliant on their textbooks. These texts reflect the general common knowledge of the region shared by most educated Americans. Additionally, this study draws support from a thorough analysis of travel accounts that were extraordinarily popular during the period. These works offered Americans a chance to explore vicariously the most interesting lands of the …

Impact Of The Choosing The Best Program In Communities Committed To Abstinence Education, Lisa D. Lieberman, Haiyan Su

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

States vary in standards for sex education, some requiring an emphasis on abstinence. Schools seek to identify curricula that reflect local community values and meet state standards. Choosing the Best (CTB), a classroom-based abstinence education curriculum, has been implemented in 75 Georgia school districts since 1995. CTB Inc., sought to determine if this popular program had an impact on abstinence attitudes, intentions, and behavior. Six Georgia public schools (1,143 ninth graders) participated in the study in 2009-2010. Four randomly assigned schools received the CTB curriculum, taught by trained CTB staff. Two control schools received their usual textbook-based abstinence lessons. Surveys …

Social Class And Finding A Congregation: How Attendees Are Introduced To Their Congregations, Philip Schwadel Jan 2012

Social Class And Finding A Congregation: How Attendees Are Introduced To Their Congregations, Philip Schwadel

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Despite the large numbers of Americans switching religious congregations each year, social scientists know relatively little about how people are introduced to new religious congregations. In this research note, I use multiple surveys of congregants—two surveys of Presbyterians in the 1990s and a survey of attendees from a random sample of congregations in 2001—to examine the effects of education and income on how attendees are introduced to their religious congregations. Results show that education and income are key predictors of how attendees find their congregations. In general, Americans with low levels of education and income are disproportionately likely to be …

Digital Video: Engaging Students In Critical Media Literacy And Community Activism, Jessie Daniels

Publications and Research

This article presents a strategy for teaching health communication that fosters critical media literacy through the strategic combination of digital video, documentary film, video worksheets, and peer-reviewed journal articles. Given the media-saturated environment in which notions of health are shaped, critical media literacy skills are crucial to students in health-related fields. Cases of key concepts illustrated through documentary films and the peer-reviewed literature are presented. The article then explores how one class took the lead in designing a community event that critically engaged both a YouTube video and a documentary film about police brutality as a public health issue.

Imperial Education And The Crisis Of Political Leadership In Postcolonial Kenya, Mwangi D. Njagi Dec 2011

Imperial Education And The Crisis Of Political Leadership In Postcolonial Kenya, Mwangi D. Njagi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines how imperial education contributed to the crisis of Kenya's postcolonial political leadership. It argues that the system of education inaugurated by the agents of European imperialism, having banished imaginative political leadership of pre-colonial African society and embedded itself as the superior alternative, fashioned African political elite who could not be relied upon to spearhead modernization of their societies. Instead, these elite became more adroit at preserving the same instruments of colonial state that had been used to subjugate Africans. The study reassesses our understanding of colonial education in the context of African colonialism, showing that the common …
