Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The Committee on Public Information was established during World War I to turn every channel of communication and education to promote the war effort. The Committee marshaled agencies of the press, education, and advertising, among others into wartime service for the Committee. The following questions are posed: 1) To what degree did the Committee practice direct censorship in its promotion of wartime issues? 2) What was the role of education in the wartime campaigns? 3) What was the role of the artist in wartime art affect public taste? This article is based on the theory put forth by Lawrence A. …

"Education For Service": Gender, Class, & Professionalism At The Boston Normal School, 1870-1920, Ann Froines
Women’s and Gender Studies Faculty Publication Series
"Education for Service," and “The Truth Shall Make You Free,” are two aphorisms engraved in granite over doorways of the Boston Normal School (BNS) buildings on Huntington Avenue in Boston. One can argue that the history of women in the teaching profession, its paradoxical and conflicted reality, are reflected in the complex and contradictory meanings of these two aphorisms. Young women students at BNS were moving toward greater freedom or autonomy by taking advantage of the educational opportunity available to them in this city-supported, tuition-free teacher training institution. At the same time, they were providing a crucial social service sanctioned …

Development And Construct Validation Of An Instrument To Measure Caring In The Helping Professions., Barbara Spruill Moffett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the construct of caring in the helping professions and to develop an instrument to measure the affective component of caring in the specific context of professional nursing. The study involved development of a conceptual framework for the construct of caring, instrument development, and examination of validity evidence using multiple criteria. The sample for this study included 421 registered nurses employed in randomly selected acute care settings. Each participant completed the Caring Inventory for Nurses (CI-N) which included 40 items representing four hypothesized dimensions: receptivity, responsivity, moral/ethical consciousness and professional commitment. Seven …

The Nature And Extent Of Pastoral Care In Five Western Australian Government Secondary Schools, W. L. Macdonald
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The research is centred upon the nature and extent of pastoral care provision in five Western Australian Government secondary schools. The project took the form of five case-studies, set in schools which each had well established pastoral strategies in place. The schools plans and policies were influenced by contexts of State and Federal education programmes, by the community setting of each school, by community concerns, and by other priorities within the school itself. In the study, information was collected through interviews and written responses from school staff, through documentary evidence of plans and policies for pastoral care, and through the …

A Five-Year Trend Analysis Of Attitudes Of Female High School Seniors Toward Post-High School Work And Education Possibilities, Evelyn Ruth Beck
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A five year trend analysis of attitudes of female high school seniors toward post-high school work and education possibilities investigates what, if any, trends exist regarding education and work they would be doing at age 30. Correlations between females' post-high school education and work goals and their parents attaining a college degree was studied. The relationship between daughters' education and work goals and the mothers' employment was researched; This study, while not showing a changing trend in the attitudes toward post-high school education, did define solidly the work and educational goals of female high school seniors during the period of …

The Differences In Maternal Stress Levels Between Participants And Non-Participants In Formal Parenteducation Programs, Nancy Jean Tully
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the differences in stress levels of first time mothers of newborn children as measured by The Parenting Stress Index (PSI) (Abidin, 1986). Two groups of mothers were compared. One group of parents were subscribers to the monthly publication, Growing Child, and another group of mothers did not receive any specific instruction regarding child development. The data were gathered in a pretest-posttest format with an approximate interval of six months. Data were analyzed using t-tests and scatterplots. Results showed insignificant differences between pretest to posttest gain scores on the Child Domain, Parent Domain and Total Stress scales of …
An Emerging View Of Mastery, Excellence, And Leadership In Occupational Therapy Practice., Janice P Burke, Elizabeth Depoy
An Emerging View Of Mastery, Excellence, And Leadership In Occupational Therapy Practice., Janice P Burke, Elizabeth Depoy
Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers
The recent focus on clinical reasoning in occupational therapy, specifically on how therapists solve complex problems, has stimulated interest in how master clinicians think in practice. By gaining insight into how clinicians think and what they think about when they identify and solve problems, we may be able to identify clinical reasoning patterns and processes that occupational therapy students and novice therapists need to experience in order to progress in their practice or to emerge as leaders in their field. Observation of the way in which clinical masters and leaders view challenges and solve problems as manifested in their clinical …

A Comparative Study Of Parenting Skills: Special Education Vs. Regular Education, Judith Ann Fleming
Student Work
The parenting skills of teenage mothers were examined across three groups of mothers, low functioning teenage mothers in special education, teenage mothers in regular education, and teenage mothers from an agency specializing in intervention for maltreating parents. Relationships between Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAP) were examined to see if special education mothers benefitted from a parenting class in their curriculum. Significant differences were found in the PSI parent domain attachment, PSI parent domain relationship with spouse, and CAP rigidity scales. No significant differences were found in the total scores for all three groups. The …

Widows, Education And Social Change In Twentieth Century Banaras, Nita Kumar
Widows, Education And Social Change In Twentieth Century Banaras, Nita Kumar
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
In the first half of this century, some one dozen women in Banaras played key rotes in channelling the educational movement into new directions, expanding its agenda to include girls, especially poor girls. These women stand out as pioneering in that they founded schools, dynamic in the way they administered and expanded them, and radical in the vision they had for their students. What makes the case of these women particularly interesting is that they were mostly widows. They rejected the familiar stereotypes for widows through their activism, but in subtle ways that retained for them the respect of society …

The Effects Of Community Building Group Process Intervention Technique On Reading Performance Among Inmates In A Medium Security Prison., Robert Earl Roberts
The Effects Of Community Building Group Process Intervention Technique On Reading Performance Among Inmates In A Medium Security Prison., Robert Earl Roberts
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A substantial body of research has shown that when students work together in groups and are rewarded based on the learning of all the groups members, they achieve consistently more than students who are in traditionally taught classes. The goal of this project was to test the effects of an innovative group process intervention technique on reading performance among a population of incarcerated adult males in a medium security prison in Louisiana. This model, referred to as "Community Building" (CBGP), has been utilized among other ways as an intervention technique to resolve organizational/personnel problems in private, business, university, and government …

Human Service: A Framework For Education And Practice, Hyung Shik Kim, Roderic Underwood
Human Service: A Framework For Education And Practice, Hyung Shik Kim, Roderic Underwood
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper sets out to deal with two main themes. The first theme considers the historical, political and social forces in human service delivery which were instrumental in the gradual recognition of human service as a field of academic study and practice. The paper firmly locates human services in organisational and administrative settings, in contrast to therapeutic or clinical orientations of the established helping professions.
The second theme deals with the domain of human services by incorporating the value commitment to meeting human needs. The normative position identifies human service as a field of study and practice which cuts across …
