This study is concerned with the relationship between defects of articulation in speech and emotional instability in elementary school children. The general procedure followed throughout the study involved a comparison of children having articulatory defects with speech normal children for personal and social adjustment.

It was the purpose of this study (1) to obtain a cross-section analysis of the eleventh and twelfth grade teachers of literature in the state of Washington; (2) to discover the attitudes of these teaches as to why and how literature should be taught in grades eleven and twelve; (3) to learn how it is actually taught at theses grade levels; (4) to present and analyze these finding; (5) to ascertain which college courses these teachers felt had helped them the most in preparing to teach literature; and (6) to make suggestions that might help the prospective teachers of literature.

In assuming this study, the author purported to ascertain both the potential and the limitations of manuscript-style hand-writing. A more important goal was to probe the existing fallacies and beliefs that surround one of the most controversial areas in the field of language arts, manuscript-style handwriting. A brief review of the evolution of written communication will be of interest before considering the possibility of predicting writing success in advance of writing instruction. 1. Earliest Types of Writing. Records of time and number were ingeniously kept by such devices as notches in sticks or knots in cords. The Inca Quipu, a cord device for keeping records, is an outstanding example of this sort. However, a need of records for religious and government purposes, trade and general communication urges the further development of writing.

From the very first symbol drawn upon the ground to the contemporary complicated system of communication, spelling has been a problem. The conveyance of an idea by writing has given the individual a means of expression to his fellow man, and has given the culture of the nation a method of carrying its discoveries to other groups. This study was prompted by the need for further understanding of the relationship of phonics to spelling ability.

Union High School is located in Roosevelt, Utah, on the Uintah and Duchesne county line.

Students come to Union High School from an area of approximately 30 miles radius around Roosevelt. Included in this area is the Ouray and Uintah Indian reservation.

There are approximately 125 full-blood and mixed-blood Indians who should be attending Union High School. The greater majority of these students live on the reservation named above.

Since 1951, when the majority of the Ute Indian students were transferred from the Indian school, there has been a closer association of full-blood Indian, mixed-blood Indian, and white students. With …

Often expressed claims which amounted to a general belief among many of the administrators of the schools of Carbon County were the stimulus for this study. The claims generally expressed were that the Mexican-Indian students of the schools did not have as good ability, did not achieve as well, were poorer attenders, caused a larger amount of difficulty and delinquency and did not adjust to the school society as well proportionately as their co-students of other nationalities.
