LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The objectives of this study were to determine: the practices of the LCES clothing program audience and of the general public, if differences exist between factors of the clothing program audience and the general public when controlled for urban or rural status, and if respondent characteristics are significant predictors of clothing practice factors. The research procedure utilized a descriptive design. A questionnaire was mailed to 400 randomly-selected Louisiana homemakers for each of four strata of Extension audience (urban and rural) and general public (urban and rural). Descriptive statistics were used to define the samples. Factor analysis was computed on 41 …

The instrument used in this study was a set of three semantic differential scales. The scales measured attitudes toward three concepts: mentally retarded child, mentally retarded young adult, and mentally retarded elderly person. A stratified sampling procedure was used …

The Effect Of An In-Service Lecture On Diabetes On Nurses' Attitudes To Diabetes Patient Education, Jennifer A. Walters
The Effect Of An In-Service Lecture On Diabetes On Nurses' Attitudes To Diabetes Patient Education, Jennifer A. Walters
Theses : Honours
Patient education has been shown to be a major factor in improving the compliance and self-care skills of diabetic patients, thereby improving the quality of life for the patient. Nurses have an important role in diabetes patient education. Research has indicated, however, that barriers such as lack of knowledge and negative attitudes may prevent nurses from effectively delivering this care to their patients. The purpose of this experimental study was to determine whether increasing the knowledge of registered nurses through an in-service lecture on diabetes would improve their attitudes towards diabetes education. The conceptual framework for the study proposed that …

Academic Discourse: An Ethnography Of The Public And Private Literacies Of University Students, Elizabeth Chiseri-Strater
Doctoral Dissertations
This study is about the various meanings that being literate holds for two students in an academic setting. The study begins in a description of a prose writing classroom where informants are located and then goes on to follow two students from prose writing into other settings across the curriculum to consider how talk, reading, and writing are used in these classrooms. The data was collected using a number of field methods such as participant observation and intensive interviews as well as non-interactive methods such as textual and transcript analysis. Two extensive case studies form the center of the study. …
The Role Of Education In Aids Prevention, George A. Lamb, Linette G. Liebling
The Role Of Education In Aids Prevention, George A. Lamb, Linette G. Liebling
New England Journal of Public Policy
The severity of the current AIDS epidemic, combined with the lack of successful biological interventions, necessitates an active educational program as the primary intervention strategy. Health education theories abound, but relatively little definitive application of these theories has been made to the issues involved with HIV transmission: sexual behavior and the sharing of intravenous drug apparatus. Significant behavior changes have occurred in some people, but the consistency of the behavior change may be difficult to sustain. Thus, the authors suggest that health education should be delivered repeatedly in culturally acceptable language and format, by community leaders, and through many different …

Nineteen subjects from one urban site were selected to participate in the workshop and 18 subjects from another urban site served as the comparison group. Data were collected from both groups one week before, one week after and six months following the workshop. Measurements obtained before the workshop showed that the two groups had similar characteristics and pretest scores. Anthropometric measurements indicated …

The program's aims are to provide students with a basis for intelligent selection of habits, behaviorisms and programs to enable them to maintain a high quality of health and fitness throughout a lifetime. The program is composed of three major components: orientation (informing), student performance assessments, and execution (exercise prescription and monitoring). Assistance in procedures, execution of activities and evaluation monitoring are built within the …

An Evaluation Of The Expanded Food And Nutrition Education Program, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, 1983-86., Bobby Hugh Fletcher
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary objective of this study was to determine the extent to which dietary behavior changes were made by the EFNEP participants in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, and whether or not they were retained after they were graduated for six months but less than one year. Data were obtained by personal interviews conducted by paraprofessional nutrition aides on the 208 homemakers who participated in the EFNEP during 1983-86. Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …

Care During Death, Grief And Loss: The Effects Of A Workshop And Clinical Experience On Student Nurses' Attitudes And Actions, Lynda Armstrong Wilson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Problem. Nurses, members of a society which tends to avoid and deny death, grief, and loss, are frequently in situations where they must interact with persons experiencing grief from death or loss. Often educational experiences have done little to prepare student nurses to cope in positive and supportive ways. Student nurses need to develop self-awareness of their attitudes and anxieties toward death, loss, and grief; modify negative attitudes; and develop a repertoire of interpersonal skills to support persons experiencing grief. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine if academic, and experiential learning could influence the clinical performance of …

Data was collected regarding the nine roles and six work-related variables by mail questionnaire. A total of 230 usable responses were received from the 248 agents on active duty during May, 1985.
