Impact Of Hispanic Ethnic Concentration And Socioeconomic Status On Obesity Prevalence In Texas Counties, Jennifer J. Salinas, Elizabeth Rocha, Bassent Abdelbary, Jennifer L. Gay, Ken Sexton
Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study is to determine whether Hispanic ethnic concentration is associated with a higher prevalence of obesity and, if this relationship exists, whether it is affected by the socioeconomic environment. The study uses the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) linked to 2000 census data to access the relationship between prevalence of obesity, Hispanic ethnic concentration, poverty and level of education at a county-level. The findings suggest that the association of Hispanic ethnic concentration and obesity varies by socioeconomic environment. Although little influence was observed for % poverty, the relationship between Hispanic ethnic concentration and obesity …

Framing The College Debate : Insights On Obama's Rhetoric Through The Capabilities Approach, Caitlin M. Manak
Framing The College Debate : Insights On Obama's Rhetoric Through The Capabilities Approach, Caitlin M. Manak
Honors Theses
President Obama has proposed that the United States increase the number of college graduates by 8 million by 2020 in order to raise national educational standards and to engage in global competition. Obama’s policies and rhetoric frequently describe “education as a pathway to success” and “education as a pathway to jobs,” but fail to emphasize its comprehensive, intrinsic values. America’s national discussion on education needs to shift away from framing higher education merely as pathway to the workforce, and should focus instead on education as a vital part of a well-lived life. To fulfill social justice under the capabilities approach, …

Childhood Obesity And Restrictions Of Parental Liberty. A Response To "Paternalism, Obesity, And Tolerable Levels Of Risk", Kristin Voigt
Democracy & Education
This paper responds to Michael Merry’s recent contribution on childhood obesity. Merry’s analysis highlights the difficulties in finding an appropriate balance between children’s and parents’ interests in antiobesity interventions and emphasizes the importance of weight stigma and its effects on the obesity debate. He concludes by recommending both a greater focus on policies that address society's contribution to childhood obesity and a greater involvement of obese individuals in the policy debate. This response focuses on three points. First, a more explicit recognition of parents’ interests can support the case for the kinds of policies Merry has in mind. Second, while …

An Empirical Evidence Of The Impact Of Education On Poverty, Angeline M. Pogoy, Imelda C. Montalbo
CNU Journal of Higher Education
This study analyzed the impact of tertiary education on the quality of life on the families of selected CNU student assistants living below the poverty threshold after successfully completing their teacher education degrees in the university. A tracer analysis revealed that among the personal, social and demographic characteristics considered, the graduates‘ level of self-esteem strongly determines their contribution to alleviating their families‘ poverty condition. Educating a poor student who possesses strong belief in his capacity to help his family indeed significantly enhances the prospect of alleviating his family from the clutches of poverty.

American School Finance Litigation And The Right To Education In South Africa, Scott R. Bauries
American School Finance Litigation And The Right To Education In South Africa, Scott R. Bauries
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This paper addresses the South African Constitution's invitation to the Constitutional Court to 'consider foreign law' when interpreting its provisions. Focusing on the education provisions found in section 29 of the Constitution, I make two claims. Firstly, contrary to the developing consensus, American state supreme court jurisprudence in school funding cases makes a poor resource to aid the interpretation of the basic South African right to education, regardless of the quantum of education that the Constitutional Court decides is encompassed by the word 'basic'. Secondly, however, certain aspects of these same American decisions, particularly the space they provide for a …

Impact Of The Choosing The Best Program In Communities Committed To Abstinence Education, Lisa D. Lieberman, Haiyan Su
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
States vary in standards for sex education, some requiring an emphasis on abstinence. Schools seek to identify curricula that reflect local community values and meet state standards. Choosing the Best (CTB), a classroom-based abstinence education curriculum, has been implemented in 75 Georgia school districts since 1995. CTB Inc., sought to determine if this popular program had an impact on abstinence attitudes, intentions, and behavior. Six Georgia public schools (1,143 ninth graders) participated in the study in 2009-2010. Four randomly assigned schools received the CTB curriculum, taught by trained CTB staff. Two control schools received their usual textbook-based abstinence lessons. Surveys …

What Is A Healthy Community?, Denise Tanata Ashby, Jennifer Pharr
What Is A Healthy Community?, Denise Tanata Ashby, Jennifer Pharr
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
The health of a community is dependent not only upon the genetics of its residents, but also upon the environment within which those individuals live. A person’s health is a product of their environment. As such, a healthy community is one in which all residents have access to a quality education, safe and healthy homes, adequate employment, transportation, physical activity, and nutrition, in addition to quality health care. Unhealthy communities lead to chronic disease, such as cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. The health of our communities is critical to the growth and development of our region. To build healthy communities …

Teaching Children How To Like Balanced Meals, Harumi Norasakkunkit
Teaching Children How To Like Balanced Meals, Harumi Norasakkunkit
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Growing up in Japan, balanced meals were always provided at home, at schools and even at restaurants. Unfortunately, children are not going to choose balanced meals from the start, so this habit has to be instilled by parents and by the educational system until it eventually becomes a personal preference for children. If children are simply given the choice to eat whatever they want from the beginning, it is unlikely that this preference will ever be developed. The emphasis of nurturing the habit of eating balanced meals, rather than just eating preferred foods, is what is particular about Japanese parenting. …

'Delivering' Education; Maintaining Inequality. The Case Of Children With Disabilities In Afghanistan, Jean-Francois Trani, Parul Bakhshi, Anand Nandipati
Brown School Faculty Publications
Education for children with disabilities in Afghanistan, particularly disabled girls, continues to lag behind despite laudable efforts of the Ministry of Education to promote universal access for all. The opportunity for education constitutes not just a means of achieving learning outcomes but also a space for social interaction, individual development and psychosocial support, which are paramount in Conflict Affected Fragile States (CAFS). However, many persisting barriers still need to be overcome in Afghanistan to allow education for all and change negative attitudes towards education of children with disabilities. In this paper we argue that viewing education as a basic commodity, …
