Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Tobacco Cessation Curriculum For Dental Hygiene Programs, Joan M. Davis Rdh, Ms, Margaret S Stockdale, Martha Cropper

Journal Articles

Dental health care providers continue to offer inconsistent and limited tobacco use cessation (TUC) interventions even though smoking-related morbidity and mortality continue to be a substantial health concern. Our purpose was to conduct a comprehensive, three-year (2003-06) TUC curriculum evaluation that included assessment of existing TUC education offered; dental hygiene educators' readiness to incorporate TUC education into the curriculum; and development of a pre-test/post-test assessment instrument and faculty development program. This curriculum study was carried out alongside a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of a peer-reviewed tobacco curriculum (Tobacco Free! Curriculum). Faculty members (baseline n=97; third-year n=42) from the …

Third Grade Hands On Science Curriculum, Douglas Ray Cornwell May 2010

Third Grade Hands On Science Curriculum, Douglas Ray Cornwell

All Graduate Projects

In 2009, Washington State issued a new set of science standards. These new standards focus on building scientific literacy. With the emphasis now on scientific literacy rather than the traditional emphasis on fact memorization, many teachers must now find new ways to teach their science programs that reinforce understanding in science concepts rather than simple fact recollection. A science program that focuses on the constructivist learning philosophy and that offers students "hands on" activities as well as teacher led demonstrations is offered here to fill the role as an example of one of these new programs.

Using Homework To Support Standards, Socorro Yanez-Garcia May 2010

Using Homework To Support Standards, Socorro Yanez-Garcia

All Graduate Projects

Historically, homework has been a controversial issue that has impacted teachers, students, and parents (Gill & Schlossman, 1996, 2004). Opponents of homework are quick to talk about the hours of meaningless homework that students are required to complete and how homework detracts from family time (Kralovec & Buell, 2000). However, this is no reason to completely do away with homework. Teachers may lack access to meaningful homework that is aligned with what students are expected to know. Homework is an important part of a student's education (Cooper, 1989). Homework that has a defined purpose before it is assigned has been …

A Philosophical Inquiry On The Valuation And Selection Of Musical Materials For Culturally Diverse Learners In Global Environments, Jonathan Bassett Apr 2010

A Philosophical Inquiry On The Valuation And Selection Of Musical Materials For Culturally Diverse Learners In Global Environments, Jonathan Bassett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The selection of musical materials for use in the classroom is problematic. Since music educators have limited time with students, the inclusion of musical materials necessitates the perceived exclusion of other musical materials. This perception is due in part to the increasing diversity of students represented in the classroom, the cultural labeling of musical materials, the influence of multiculturalism on music education, and the influence of the Western aesthetic in music education. Since diverse groups can and do propose socially perceived valuations of these materials as critical for the inclusion of specific musical materials for use in the classroom, this …

What Would Saint Vincent De Paul Do About Today's Global Poverty? Personalism Vs. Paternalism: Social Work's Role Within A Vincentian Institution, Troy Harden

Vincentian Studies

DePaul University’s mission and values statement and the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics are compared with the goal of forming lasting community/university partnerships for poverty eradication. In particular, DePaul’s social work program is examined. The university’s relationship to Chicago communities is explored. The article emphasizes importance of listening and responding to the needs of community organizations, rather than performing service based on our perceptions of those needs. The true value of service lies in transforming the outlook of those who serve and their resulting commitment to justice. Learning from the communities being served is just as essential …

Students already in leadership positions should be empowered with skills and knowledge to increase their projects’ success. Poor persons’ access to education should be increased. Research should be conducted on poverty and poverty reduction. Dumbleton’s specific focus is on the undergraduate program at Tangaza College in Nairobi and its partnership with DePaul University. At the time she was writing, the program …

In Service Of Whom?: The Impact Of Vincentian Universities' Institutional Investment Practices On Global Poverty, Charles R. Strain Ph.D. Apr 2010

In Service Of Whom?: The Impact Of Vincentian Universities' Institutional Investment Practices On Global Poverty, Charles R. Strain Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Charles Strain discusses the role of Vincentian universities as responsible investors and as responsible citizens and how their business practices can help alleviate global poverty. He defines three principles with which to evaluate these practices: solidarity, subsidiarity, and a preferential option for the poor. Vincentian universities should always keep Catholic social teaching in mind and operate according to socially responsible investment (SRI). Strain explains what SRI is and how its components—shareholder advocacy, social screens, and community investment—can result in investments that are ethical and profitable. Community investment is a particularly effective means of alleviating poverty.

Play: A Process-Driven Study Of Design Discovery, Kuebler Wilson Perry Mar 2010

Play: A Process-Driven Study Of Design Discovery, Kuebler Wilson Perry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Frequently, in architecture and in other professions, a results-oriented approach to design truncates the creative process. Architecture is a man-made intervention, ultimately involving a fair bit of destruction in order to eventually arrive in a state of hopefully coherent grace in the lives of its users and the built or natural context (Clark 2000, 10). It is unacceptable to proceed hastily into such complex territory-without a degree of rigor and process-driven creativity commensurate with the gravity of creating large scale, reality-altering, life-affecting structures.

A process-driven inquiry requires many hours of experiment, revision, and meandering about that may initially have no …

The Value Of A Teaching And Learning Center, Mary Deane Sorcinelli

Faculty Journal Articles

One of the most pressing issues in higher education is that of student learning – how to improve, measure, and ensure it. Parents, government officials, and business leaders are demanding that colleges and universities educate their students better, and many institutions have responded by establishing teaching and learning centers. These centers have emphasized the centrality of student learning and have offered support to faculty to become the most effective teachers possible. During the last decade, there has been tremendous growth in centers across the globe: the best private and public research universities have created them, and new centers are burgeoning …
