School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This chapter explores the intellectual origins and historical precursors of Critical Race Theory (CRT), a lively branch of critical social theory. The chapter begins by contextualizing contemporary discourse on race and education. It then chronicles the life work of key individuals whose antiracist, anti- colonial ideas and actions helped lay the foundation for the body of legal …

What We Talk About When We Talk About Literacy: A Look Into The Value, Measurement, And Power Hierarchy Of Literacy, Veronica Carolyn Bond Mar 2011

What We Talk About When We Talk About Literacy: A Look Into The Value, Measurement, And Power Hierarchy Of Literacy, Veronica Carolyn Bond

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Literacy statistics presented in the National Endowment for the Arts "To Read or Not To Read" study and the National Assessment of Adult Literacy "Literacy in Everyday Life" study show a strong correlation between reading proficiency and socioeconomic success that are impossible to ignore.  Although literacy is often thought to be the simple ability to read or write, the discussion surrounding literacy in this country implies an evaluation of the way people use these abilities.  While reading tests may appear to measure quantitative skills, essentially whether a person can or cannot read, what they truly do is evaluate whether a …

The Millennium Development Goals: Prospects For Gender Equality In The Arab World, Nadine Sika Mar 2011

The Millennium Development Goals: Prospects For Gender Equality In The Arab World, Nadine Sika

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study is an assessment of the Millennium Development Goals in the Arab world with Egypt as a case study. The analysis focuses on access to primary education, gender equality, and women empowerment in the Arab world with special emphasis on Egypt. The study found that most Arab countries are on the right track toward achieving most of the MDGs by 2015. However, discriminatory social norms, laws, and practices are still at the heart of gender inequality in the Arab world, and therefore need to be further incorporated in the MDGs to advance a more egalitarian developmental approach.

Gulf Cooperation Council (Gcc) Women And Misyar Marriage: Evolution And Progress In The Arabian Gulf, Tofol Jassim Al-Nasr Mar 2011

Gulf Cooperation Council (Gcc) Women And Misyar Marriage: Evolution And Progress In The Arabian Gulf, Tofol Jassim Al-Nasr

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women’s status continues to undergo rapid evolution in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC). The modernization policies sweeping the energy-rich region has resulted in unintended social and gender imbalances. Partly due to the wealth distribution policies and the vast influx of foreign labor into the GCC, the region’s indigenous people are facing several challenges as they adapt to their surrounding environment. Improvements to women’s education have resulted in an imbalance of highly educated women relative to their male counterparts in the region, tipping the scales of gender roles. While both men and women accept predominantly paternal values, the strides in women’s …

Law Is Not A Spectator Sport: Addressing Challenges Posed By Civic Education Through Public Engagement With The Supreme Court, Erica Lauren Bashaw Mar 2011

Law Is Not A Spectator Sport: Addressing Challenges Posed By Civic Education Through Public Engagement With The Supreme Court, Erica Lauren Bashaw

Journalism

Democracy relies on an informed and engaged citizenry.  Low knowledge of public policy debates makes it difficult for government to meaningfully reflect the will of the people or for citizens to engage in fruitful public discussions.  The discussions we manage to have about law and politics too often resemble a hyper-partisan cable news show rather than an honest effort at a conversation.  In addition, many studies have suggested that, on the whole, Americans are not as informed about the courts as one would hope. This is especially true of the United States Supreme Court, which benefits from the “myth” that …

Administrative Strategies For Preparing Teaching Candidates To Be Building-Level Technology Change Agents, Richard Rose Feb 2011

Administrative Strategies For Preparing Teaching Candidates To Be Building-Level Technology Change Agents, Richard Rose

Administrative Issues Journal

Teacher education graduates in their early years of service are ill-prepared to act as building-level change agents who can advocate for the enhanced use of technology in the classroom. In this study, a group of experienced teachers seeking the M.Ed. in Educational Technology suggest that the lack of confidence which new teachers show in relation to technology can be traced back to the absence of rigorous technical skill-building in both their Introduction to Educational Technology class and methods classes. These tech-savvy mid-career teachers then identify obstacles to enhancing pre-service teacher education programs with more effective preparation in teaching with technology …

Slow But Sure, Africa's Path To Democracy: [Bridled] Globalization, Education, And The Middle Class, Thomas Kojo Stephens Jan 2011

Slow But Sure, Africa's Path To Democracy: [Bridled] Globalization, Education, And The Middle Class, Thomas Kojo Stephens

Cornell Law School J.D. Student Research Papers

Africa! The word has been associated with poverty, greed, brutality and gangsterism. Why is Africa, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, still wallowing in poverty while the great mass of nations are moving forward, some taking strides while others making gargantuan leaps? Is there any hope that African countries will in large part become democratic? How do they get there? In this paper, I give a short historical background of how Africa has evolved over the years into modern day Africa in order to understand how Africa has come to be what, and where it is today. I make the argument that the …

John Hughes May Be Onto Something: Anti-Authoritarianism In Education, Film And Policy, James M. Iddins Jan 2011

John Hughes May Be Onto Something: Anti-Authoritarianism In Education, Film And Policy, James M. Iddins

Graduate Student Publications

In this article, I use two popular anti-authoritarian films to explore often-overlooked options for the education reform debate and general issues related to educational public policy. Bringing in sources from many disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, and economics, I argue for a second look at the issues revealed in the films and action on our part toward creating a more sustainable educational and economic reality. I contend that if we take into account our historical context, we come to a much different conclusion regarding these issues than we might have otherwise.

The Importance Of The Arts In Schools : Do The Arts Help The Learning Processes Of Students With Special Needs?, Suzanne Dolores Boswell Jan 2011

The Importance Of The Arts In Schools : Do The Arts Help The Learning Processes Of Students With Special Needs?, Suzanne Dolores Boswell

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

There are board members in the schools’ districts who want to take out the arts because of several reasons such as the cost and the lack of support. The arts in schools are not only beneficial to students with special needs, but all students as well. For instance, I am a student with ADHD and severe dyslexia and teachers always gave up on me until the arts were introduced. If the arts are kept in schools, all students will develop learning techniques to help them now and in the future. With the arts, teachers and parents will see their students …

The project was comprised of five workshop classes held at the Boys and Girls Club in Santa Cruz for children ages eleven to thirteen. The Wiki Way: Supporting Collaborative Learning For First Year Students, Kathleen Hughes Jan 2011

The Wiki Way: Supporting Collaborative Learning For First Year Students, Kathleen Hughes

Papers, presentations and other resources

Skills in working in teamwork are demanded from graduates, and these are ever more likely to be over the internet. Horizon (2011) calls for this need to be reflected in students’ project work. The use of Wikis has been posited as a tool for collaborative online knowledge creation, increasing engagement, and social constructivism (Wheeler and Wheeler, 2008). The use of wikis in student groups is still relatively new, however, and the need for deeper investigation of its role in supporting group collaboration has been identified in literature (Bruen et al, in Donnelly, Harvey and O’ Rourke, 2010).

This study utilised …

Earlier research leaves gaps as it is related to international (non-native speaker of English) student-athletes and their experiences, which impact their decision to study in the United …
