From Toxic Tours To Growing The Grassroots: Tensions In Critical Pedagogy And Community Development, Celina Su, Isabelle Jagninski Jan 2013

From Toxic Tours To Growing The Grassroots: Tensions In Critical Pedagogy And Community Development, Celina Su, Isabelle Jagninski

Publications and Research

Structural inequalities in American public education are inextricably tied to deep-seated patterns of racial and economic segregation. Children in poor neighborhoods are less likely to have the household resources, neighborhood institutions, or school amenities necessary for a good, challenging education. In response, a growing number of organizations have launched initiatives to simultaneously revitalize neighborhoods and improve public education, emphasizing youth participation as an essential component in their efforts. We draw upon ethnographic data from two such organizations to examine their practice of place-based critical pedagogy in community development. We focus on how they engage marginalized, “hard-to-reach” youth via (1) experiential …

Education And Literacy, Carol Summers Jan 2013

Education And Literacy, Carol Summers

History Faculty Publications

Loram's definition of education as planned by the powerful for the social construction of useful and 'good' Africans, along with his implicit concerns about bad or disruptive literate individuals, represented the views of many educationists during the colonial era. Such views, moreover, survived the end of colonial rule, re-emerging at the centre of shifting debates over how educational institutions and pedagogies should either persist or be challenged. Social utility defined education, not its specific content in reading, arithmetic, religious faith, business, or gardening. Struggles over educational planning were less over whether it was a form of social control than over …

By harnessing improvements on communications and computational systems, law firms are producing a revolution in the practice of law. Self-help legal manuals have transformed into sophisticated interactive software; predictive coding can empower clients to receive sophisticated legal advice from a machine; socially mediated portals select among potential lawyers and assess the quality of the advice given; and virtual law firms threaten to distintermediate the grand edifices of twentieth century Big Law. These changes may profoundly restructure the legal practice, undermining the business model for many solo and small firm practices. This paper focuses on the implications of these profound disruptive …

An Examination Of Project Based Learning At The Secondary Level: A Review Of Literature, Candace Mirabile Jan 2013

An Examination Of Project Based Learning At The Secondary Level: A Review Of Literature, Candace Mirabile

MERC Publications

Project based learning (PBL) is a pedagogical approach designed to capture student interest by integrating a contemporary and relevant problem or issue with content standards. The expectation is that students who have not been successful under traditional teacher‐ centered/ lecture‐oriented instruction will be taken in by the opportunity to investigate a topic of personal interest using PBL. Moreover, some say that when constructivist learning (upon which PBL is based) is designed to reflect contemporary research methods and design protocols, students will be better prepared for the 21st century workplace (Apedoe, Reynolds, Ellefson & Schunn, 2008; Bell, 2010; Technology Assistance Program, …

Comparison Of Fair Dealing And Fair Use In Education Post-Pentalogy, Lisa Di Valentino Jan 2013

Comparison Of Fair Dealing And Fair Use In Education Post-Pentalogy, Lisa Di Valentino

FIMS Working Papers

While traditionally American fair use has been thought of as broader in scope than Canadian fair dealing, I claim that in 2013 this is no longer the case. I further argue that educational administrators and academic and library associations in Canada have yet to take full advantage of this expansion of users’ rights.

In Part I I give a brief and general overview of copyright in Canada and the United States. In Part II I compare the legislation and jurisprudence specifically with respect to fair dealing and fair use, using the fairness factors as a guide. Specifically, this part will …

The Impact Of Living In A Mixed-Status Family On K-12 Students, Allison Mass Jan 2013

The Impact Of Living In A Mixed-Status Family On K-12 Students, Allison Mass

Honors Capstones

The Impact of Living in a Mixed-Status Family on K-12 Students is important because itexamines a serious issue confronting today’s schools— the experiences and needs of students living in mixed-status families, which are often not considered by educators. The significant number of students in today’s schools who are either undocumented themselves or directly impacted by a parent who is undocumented calls on teachers and administrators, regardless of their personal beliefs on immigration, to learn about the needs of these students, the challenges they face, and what can be done to help them. This is a review of the current literature …

Cyberbullying is being cruel to others by sending or posting harmful material or engaging in other forms of social cruelty using digital technologies. Because most children and young adults are computer literate and have access to a range of digital communication tools, cyberbullying has the potential to have more severe consequences than traditional …

Paradigms For Cybersecurity Education In A Homeland Security Program, Gary C. Kessler, James D. Ramsay Jan 2013

Paradigms For Cybersecurity Education In A Homeland Security Program, Gary C. Kessler, James D. Ramsay

Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach

Cybersecurity threats to the nation are growing in intensity, frequency, and severity and are a very real threat to the security of the country. Academia has responded to a wide variety of homeland security (HS) threats to the nation by creating formal curricula in the field, although these programs almost exclusively focus on physical threats (e.g., terrorist attacks, and natural and man-made disasters), law and policy and transportation . Although cybersecurity programs are commonly available in U.S. colleges and universities, they are invariably offered as a technical course of study nested within engineering (or other STEM) programs. We observe that …

"Either Way, Your Husband Won't Look At You Like An Ugly Wilted Flower" Meanings Of Purity Among Evangelical And Catholic Abstinence Education Participants, Hannah Brown Jan 2013

"Either Way, Your Husband Won't Look At You Like An Ugly Wilted Flower" Meanings Of Purity Among Evangelical And Catholic Abstinence Education Participants, Hannah Brown

Theses & ETDs

This study investigates meanings of the word purity in the context of participants' interpretations of the messaging present in Catholic and Evangelical abstinence education programs. Preexisting literature focuses on gendered notions of sexual morality in the context of patriarchy and the effectiveness of abstinence education in terms of when and how participants have sex. This study investigates how gendered notions of sexual morality are nuanced by the role of religion and individual interpretation, focusing on meaning-making rather than sexual activity. Through qualitative analysis of 14 interviews with young adults who formerly were participants in Christian abstinence education, this study identifies …

How Class Status And The New College Experience Affect Class Identity And Critical Class Awareness, Jasmine Brenton Jan 2013

How Class Status And The New College Experience Affect Class Identity And Critical Class Awareness, Jasmine Brenton

Theses & ETDs

Using data from 12 semi-structured interviews with first and fourth year students I explore how class status and level of conscious class identity influence awareness of class structures and inequality. I identify three main categories that represent different manifestations of identity and critical class awareness and divide participants among them: Critical, Aware, and Class-Blind. Critical students are conscious of their class identity, they understand that structures limit agency, and they feel confident in their self-identified class status. Aware students only think about class in response to a catalyst in their environment and fail to see how class is a structure …

Each child was randomly assigned to watch a video with human, puppet, or a combination of the character types. Before watching the video, each child was tested for theory of mind development and ability to replicate and continue ABAB and ABCABC patterns using blocks. During the video, the two characters, Alex and Jessie, built block towers using the same patterns. When Jessie accidentally knocked the tower down, Jessie asked the child what to do to make Alex feel better. The …

The Global Sustainability Transition: It Is More Than Changing Light Bulbs, Michael P. Weinstein, R. Eugene Turner, Carles Ibanez Jan 2013

The Global Sustainability Transition: It Is More Than Changing Light Bulbs, Michael P. Weinstein, R. Eugene Turner, Carles Ibanez

Faculty Publications

Current policies and norms to reconcile human demands for resources with the Earth’s ability to supply them have resulted in practices that mainly treat the symptoms of unsustainability rather than their underlying causes. Moreover, the increase in our knowledge about humankind’s role in ecosystems is not keeping pace with our understanding of the consequences of our actions, resulting in a deepening inability to address sustainability issues. The extreme complexity and intricate workings of the world require the expansion of our mental models in a systems-thinking framework if we are to realize a sustainable place for humans in it. The challenge …

Experience The Future Of Legal Education, Lorne Sossin Jan 2013

Experience The Future Of Legal Education, Lorne Sossin

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

Legal education is becoming more experiential, and this is a good thing. This essay examines both claims, and provides an account both of the origins of the experiential turn in legal education, and its implications. This account is written from a Canadian perspective, and more parochially, from an Osgoode Hall Law School perspective. That said, I believe this analysis is relevant to legal education more broadly, and contributes to the ongoing and vital debate over the future of Law School.

The Future Of Legal Education: Three Visions And A Prediction, Harry W. Arthurs Jan 2013

The Future Of Legal Education: Three Visions And A Prediction, Harry W. Arthurs

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

I’m going to present three quite different views of what law schools ought to be and ought to do. The first holds that their primary, if not their sole, function should be to produce "practice-ready lawyers" for today’s profession. The second is that they should produce "tomorrow’s lawyers", lawyers with the capacity to adapt to the rapidly and radically changing circumstances of legal practice. And the third is that law schools should play a leading role in the creation and transformation of legal knowledge, legal practice, and the legal system — a role that requires them to provide their students …

The Cultural Discontinuity Hypothesis: An Appalachian American Perspective In Eastern Kentucky, Timothy W. Conner Ii Jan 2013

The Cultural Discontinuity Hypothesis: An Appalachian American Perspective In Eastern Kentucky, Timothy W. Conner Ii

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

K.M. Tyler et al. (2008) propose a quantitative method to measure differences between school and home experiences had by students of ethnic minority status and how such differences (cultural discontinuity) may affect psychological factors related to student achievement. Although study of cultural discontinuity has been applied to understanding African American, Asian American, Latino American, and Native American student populations, little attention has been given to the ways in which cultural discontinuity may manifest in the Appalachian American population. This study conceptualizes the socio-cultural conditions that would warrant such an investigation, establishing evidence from ten interview subjects of the presence of …
