Cleerhub.Org Adoption By Eafit University Engineering Faculty Members: A Longitudinal Study, Diego M. Mendez Mena
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
The main purpose of this study is to identify and comprehend faculty members’ perception of attributes of the diffusion of the technological innovation CLEERhub.org at EAFIT University, College of Engineering, in Medellin, Colombia. Moreover, this work attempts to understand causes and motivators that might lead to innovation adoption or rejection. The Diffusion of Innovations Theory serves as the framework to develop an appropriate assessing instrument that allows accurate measuring of user opinions towards the practice of CLEERhub.org in their educational research work in Engineering. In order to correctly assess user perception of the embracement process of such technological/cyberinfrastructure innovation, the …
Indigenous Perspectives On Contemporary Native Art, Indigenous Aesthetics And Representation, John Paul Rangel
Indigenous Perspectives On Contemporary Native Art, Indigenous Aesthetics And Representation, John Paul Rangel
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
In this dissertation I examine and posit Indigenous perspectives on contemporary Native art, Indigenous aesthetics and issues of representation. Contemporary Native art at this moment is best described as an expression of values—personal or communal or cultural—with an attention to material conditions and current issues. I employ Indigenous methodologies and Tribal Critical Race theory as a critical framework to intervene in the dominant discourse on Native art. This research focuses on the narratives and perspectives of eight artists who represent a cross-section of the current state of Native arts production in North America drawing from the local Native arts community …

2013 Spring Semester
Clostridium acetobutylicum is a tricky little bacterium which can eat almost anything with carbohydrates and produce a fuel similar to ethanol. Recently, a researcher inserted its ability to make fuel into E. coli, a much more celebrated bacterium. Imagine how little Clostridium must have felt, having its only unique trait copied by the popular kid.

Landscapes To Learnscapes: Exploring Schoolyard-Based Education, Emily I. Palena, Caroline T. Spurgin
Pitzer Senior Theses
This thesis explores schoolyard-based education as a viable and necessary method for rectifying the shortcomings within the American public school system and the Nature-deficit Disorder epidemic. We argue that schoolyard-based education should be fully integrated into the school system, not in the sole form of popularized school gardens, but as a standard teaching method. We show this using extensive research and a case study of three elementary schools in Claremont, California.
School Bullying Victimization As An Educational Disability, Douglas E. Abrams
School Bullying Victimization As An Educational Disability, Douglas E. Abrams
Faculty Publications
Parts I and II of this essay urge school authorities, parents, and other concerned citizens to perceive bullying victimization as a disability that burdens targeted students. Since 1975, the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has guaranteed “full educational opportunity to all children with disabilities” in every state. The IDEA reaches both congenital disabilities and disabilities that, like bullying victimization, stem from events or circumstances unrelated to biology or birth. To set the context for perceiving bullying victimization as an educational disability, Part I describes the public schools' central role in protecting bullied students, and then briefly discusses the …

Exploring Educational Pathways: Reintegration Of The Formerly Incarcerated Through The Academy, Grant E. Tietjen
Exploring Educational Pathways: Reintegration Of The Formerly Incarcerated Through The Academy, Grant E. Tietjen
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The overarching research issue that will be addressed in this study is: what are the pathways and experiences formerly incarcerated people face when trying to acquire and/or use higher educational credentials (for example, Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees)? Another important question this study will examine is how ex-convicts successfully access academically focused higher education. There are many compelling reasons why this topic should be studied. While much research has been produced in regards to convicts and education, very little research has examined ex-inmates’ access to and utilization of academia. This study defines academia as attainment of graduate degrees or professional …

In four parts, this article focuses on NCLB’s negative impact on special education. Part II outlines the provisions of NCLB and examines the differences between NCLB and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”). Part III provides a detailed explanation of the existing scholarly opinions in support of, and in disagreement with, NCLB. Part IV discusses the current political landscape and NCLB’s pending reauthorization. Finally, Part V, based on an analysis of the issues plaguing the current system, suggests a solution to improve the existing relationship between special education and NCLB. Furthermore, Part V addresses the positive aspects and possible …

Fair Use And Education: The Way Forward, Peter Jaszi
Fair Use And Education: The Way Forward, Peter Jaszi
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The ability to make reasonable fair use of copyrighted material is both economically and culturally important to the enterprise of education. No other feature of copyright laws offers educators access of the same potential scope. In asserting fair use, teachers, librarians, and others cannot rely on a claim of "economic exceptionalism, "for which there is no clear basis in U.S. copyright law. Nor can they expect to arrive at satisfactory shared understandings with copyright owners. Instead, they should seek to take advantage of current trends in copyright case law, including the marked trend toward preferring uses that are "transformative," where …

Instructional Technology Integration 2.0: Teacher Training And Socially Enabled Help Resources, Diane K. Lafferty
Instructional Technology Integration 2.0: Teacher Training And Socially Enabled Help Resources, Diane K. Lafferty
Theses and Dissertations
The shift in technology to user-centric, social, collaborative mediums has effected education in profound ways. However, the amount of technology available for use in the classroom and the quantity of related instructional materials has eclipsed teachers' ability to effectively trouble shoot and integrate 2.0 tools into their students' learning experience. Creating a help 2.0 resource center for a specific body of faculty not only alleviates information management difficulties but provides a model of a socially enabled 2.0 sustained tool to help educate educators.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects – alone will not lead to the kind of breathtaking innovation the 21st century demands...So what does it mean to add Art to turn STEM to STEAM?

Towards A “Cloud Curriculum” In Art And Science?, Roger Malina
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Recently an email hit my desk from Paul Thomas in Australia with a proposal to work together on a “Cloud Curriculum for Art and Science”. I immediately agreed to collaborate. I don’t yet have a clue of what a cloud curriculum is, but what I do know is that we are ‘backing into the future’ in educational institutions and we desperately need a ‘cloud curriculum.’ We need to look over the ten year horizon. And in the emerging art-science field I doubt that the usual approach to curriculum development will work.

Steam...Now!, John Eger
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
With America slowly awakening to the need to turn out creative and innovative workers who can join the 21st century (its already 2012) workplace -- because they have the new thinking skills --we have to change the current emphasis on STEM, for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to STEAM, by insuring that the whole brain is nurtured through the arts: thus STEAM.

Educating For A Critical Democracy: Civic Participation Reimagined In The Council Of Youth Research, Nicole Mirra, Ernest D. Morrell, Ebony Cain, D'Artagnan Scorza, Arlene Ford
Democracy & Education
This article explores civic learning, civic participation, and the development of civic agency within the Council of Youth Research (the Council), a program that engages high school students in youth participatory action research projects that challenge school inequalities and mobilize others in pursuit of educational justice. We critique the neoliberal view of democracy that dominates in the existing research, policy, and practice around urban school reform and civic education and instead turn to evidence from social movements and critical social theory as a foundation for a reimagined, more robust vision of critical democracy. Through our analysis of the activities that …
Education As A Human Right In The 21st Century, Sharon E. Lee Dr
Education As A Human Right In The 21st Century, Sharon E. Lee Dr
Democracy & Education
According to the United Nations, education is a right to which all human beings are entitled. Since 2000, the UN has been promoting the Millennium Development Goal to achieve free universal primary education for all, regardless of gender, by 2015. If the UN is correct to suggest that education is both a human right in itself and an indispensable means of realizing other human rights, then there is an important need to question the role that governments should play to support the institutional reforms necessary to achieve basic primary education for all. Moreover, there is an important need to question …

Small-Dollar Children's Savings Accounts And College Outcomes, William Elliott Iii
Center for Social Development Research
In this paper, I examine the relationship between children’s small-dollar savings accounts and college enrollment and graduation by asking three important research questions: (a) are children with savings of their own more likely to attend or graduate from college, (b) does dosage (i.e., having no account; having basic savings only; having savings designated for school of less than $1, $1 to $499, or $500 or more) matter, and (c) is having savings designated for school more predictive than having basic savings alone? I use aggregate data from the newest wave of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and its …

The Influence Of Culture And Identity On Second Language Acquisition: A Perspective From Egypt, Shirley Barber
The Influence Of Culture And Identity On Second Language Acquisition: A Perspective From Egypt, Shirley Barber
Theses and Dissertations
Often, in second language classrooms, little or no attention is given by the teacher or curriculum (including the Educational system) to the identity of the student. A student enters the classroom with his own identity and culture. When acquiring a second language, it is necessary for the student to absorb the culture of the second language, too (Spackman, 2009, p.2). This is where the issue of culture and identity influencing second language acquisition occurs. In general, students represent the identity and culture of their first language and where they come from. The purpose of this study is to examine the …

In order to know the aspects that need improvement in the Egyptian mathematics educational system, this study analyzed both the national Egyptian and the national Singaporean eighth grade mathematics educational system; mainly the standards, curricula, and textbooks. The analysis of the standards was done by comparing them to the characteristics of high …

Surviving Broken Dreams : A Qualitative Study On The Resilience Of Undocumented Students, Kiam Parker
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative research study is to explore undocumented students perspectives of their experiences on their pathways to accessing higher education-the many obstacles they encounter and their resilience in facing these obstacles to pursue their educations. The complexities of these students experiences—living in the United States undocumented, their process of navigating the American education system and how this shapes how they perceive themselves and their life path--were examined through the narratives of six students who were enrolled in higher education, or planning to attend. The findings of this research showed that the unique psychosocial stressors undocumented students face--poverty, …
