Disruptive Innovation In The Classroom, Singapore Management University Oct 2013

Disruptive Innovation In The Classroom, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Disruptive innovation, as described on the website of the man who coined the term, Clayton Christensen, is "a process by which a product or service takes root initially in simple applications at the bottom of a market and then relentlessly moves up market, eventually displacing established competitors". Prominent examples include how the personal computer (disruptor) displaced the mainframe computer (disruptee), cellular phones displacing fixed line telephony, and community colleges eating into the market share of four-year colleges.

Development And Validation Of Pre-Service Teachers' Personal Epistemologies Of Teaching Scale (Pt-Pets), Ji Hyun Yu Oct 2013

Development And Validation Of Pre-Service Teachers' Personal Epistemologies Of Teaching Scale (Pt-Pets), Ji Hyun Yu

Open Access Dissertations

The Internet has changed not only how we conceptualize knowledge, but also how we learn in classroom. Knowledge is not any longer transmitted from experts to non-experts, but is constructed through communication, collaboration, and integration among a network of people. In this context, teachers are expected to facilitate student-centered learning by helping students to construct knowledge through higher-order thinking rather than reproduce a series of facts. Although a growing body of research suggests that teachers' beliefs about the nature of knowledge and the process of knowing, that is personal epistemology, are related to their teaching and their students' learning, little …

Certification And Signaling: The Importance Of Markets And What Makes Them Work, J Michael Pinegar Oct 2013

Certification And Signaling: The Importance Of Markets And What Makes Them Work, J Michael Pinegar

BYU Studies

J. Michael Pinegar examines financial and labor markets in terms of what makes them work efficiently. Information asymmetry between buyers and sellers can result in market failure. Two common ways to reduce information asymmetry are certification and signaling. Certification refers to a reputable third party, who affirms the quality of a product. Signaling refers to costs the seller incurs to convey the quality of the product to potential buyers. The signal might be something like a warranty. Both of these mechanisms facilitate market functioning. Pinegar gave this presentation as the BYU 2013 Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecture.

Visual Literacy And The Integration Of Parametric Modeling In The Problem-Based Curriculum, Matthew Benedict Assenmacher

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This quasi-experimental study investigated the application of visual literacy skills in the form of parametric modeling software in relation to traditional forms of sketching. The study included two groups of high school technical design students. The control and experimental groups involved in the study consisted of two randomly selected groups of students. The participants were exposed to eight weeks of technical drawing and parametric modeling instruction prior to the start of the study.

The potential applications of emerging technologies for the purpose of integrating visual literacy into the curriculum are not fully understood. Society is moving towards a more immediate …

The Impact Of The Read 180 Program On Response To Intervention, Kimberly Roshell Rakestraw

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the Read 180 program as a Response to Intervention reading strategy tool for middle school students. This study explored the effect of the RtI-designed technology-based reading program on seventh and eighth-grade students labeled as at-risk for reading failure. Data was analyzed using the standardized analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Participants in this study were given pseudonyms to protect their identity and scores. In addition, pseudonyms for the county and school where research was conducted were provided. The results of the study indicated that the Read 180 program at the focus …

Directing, Orienting And Orienteering: Supporting Students To Engage Consequentially, Nicholas Kvam Sep 2013

Directing, Orienting And Orienteering: Supporting Students To Engage Consequentially, Nicholas Kvam

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

It is often difficult for teachers to support students to engage at a consequential level. The purpose of this study is to explore how learners orient themselves in learning environments and how this can support consequential engagement. I report on analyses that focus specifically on orienteering and orienting framing of learners in new environments, and contrast this with a traditional classroom in which teacher directing dominated. This study includes four cases. The first case involves a teacher using a starter at the beginning of class to review a science concept. The second case involves students using manipulatives as a way …

Teaching Constraints, Learning Creativity: Leveraging The Guided Distractions, Margherita Pillan, Marco Maiocchi, Marko Radeta

Learn X Design Conference Series

Different disciplines require different approaches to education. The teaching of formalized sciences (such are physics, chemistry, etc.) requires the study of consolidated and already verified results and is conveniently carried out through lecturing (e.g. lectures or books) while formalisms and techniques are learned together with disciplinary contents. Soft disciplines (such are fine arts, interior design, media production, journalism, etc.) require “learning by doing”: the study of facts and techniques that is weakly related to the ability to produce masterpieces or new ideas. Design is in an intermediate position: techniques can be learned (e.g. modelling, representation, materials, colours, etc.), but the …

Designing Funwritr: Unpacking An Affinity-Based, Professionalizing, Graduate-Level Educational Technology Design Experience, Justin Olmanson, Chung-Kai Huang, Rob Scordino, Jaejin Lee

Learn X Design Conference Series

In this paper and presentation we describe, unpack, and reflect upon the dynamic, evolving processes of collaborative, democratized educational technology design that led to the creation of an open-ended literacy development and language acquisition environment named FunWritr. When the project began, each member of our group was either in a graduate program for educational technology design or interested in matriculating into such a program. Over the course of five years we have worked together, growing as designers, developers, and researchers of educational technologies. Reflecting on our authentic, self-guided, evolving curriculum ofexperiences, we recognize processes and unpack factors that contributed to …

Feel The Fear: Learning Graphic Design In Affective Places And Online Spaces, Anitra Nottingham Aug 2013

Feel The Fear: Learning Graphic Design In Affective Places And Online Spaces, Anitra Nottingham

Learn X Design Conference Series

This paper explores the idea of pedagogic affect in both onsite and online graphic design learning spaces, and speculates on the role that this affect plays in the formation of the design student. I argue that embodied design knowledge is built by interactions with design professionals, activities that mimic the daily work of designers, and practices of display such as student work galleries within design schools. Therefore bodies in motion, and the places they move within, take on more importance in the making-up of a graphic design student than we may expect. This idea has implications for online design learning. …

Challenges Of Copyright Laws For Education In A Fiji University, Shareeni Kala, Ruwani Somaratne

Pacific Studies

Globalization poses new questions regarding the relation between copyright law and education. In an Information Communication Technology (lCT) environment, a key issue is how education can best benefit from the educational resources available while still observing laws such as copyright. Changing trends and the digitalization of resources has added new challenges in the area of education, especially in the Pacific Island Countries. The use of Internet search, online database, and electronic resources has grown with the advancement of these technologies. This paper illustrates some of the challenges that exist in smaller nations such as Fiji, by reporting on some empirical …

Imagining A Common Ground: Place, Community, And The Possibility For Place-Based Education Through Flannery O'Connor's 'Greenleaf', Christine Mahoney Aug 2013

Imagining A Common Ground: Place, Community, And The Possibility For Place-Based Education Through Flannery O'Connor's 'Greenleaf', Christine Mahoney

All Theses

Through literature, news outlets, media, parents, teachers, and peers, youth are currently being made aware that there are severe problems in the environmental and social realms. However, the imagined but representative stories found in literature also offer opportunities for students to learn how to combat these crises, and instilling the value of place in students through pedagogy will help them become proactive adults. The particular dynamic between community and place is one we see at work in “Greenleaf” by Flannery O'Connor, an author who has been left out of ecopedagogical conversations but can be useful in finding imaginative connections between …

Examining The Factors That Contributed To The Retention And Graduation Of African American Males At The University Of Louisville., Kia Marie Pruitt Aug 2013

Examining The Factors That Contributed To The Retention And Graduation Of African American Males At The University Of Louisville., Kia Marie Pruitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

African American males have the highest college attrition rates of all races and genders (Harper, 2006a). Federal reports indicate that 54.4%of White males finish their college degrees, compared with 33.1% of African American males (U.S. Department of Education, 2012). The 21.3 percentage point disparity leads many to believe that African American male students may need special attention in order to close the gap. Understanding how Black male graduates succeeded and avoided obstacles which could have potentially contributed to their attrition will help colleges take a proactive stance and implement strategies to support and safeguard other Black male students facing similar …
