Relationships Between Selected Environmental Characteristics, Neighborhood Type, And School Achievement, Franklin Titus Iii Dec 1996

Relationships Between Selected Environmental Characteristics, Neighborhood Type, And School Achievement, Franklin Titus Iii

Student Work

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if neighborhood and school type help to predict 4th and 6th grade academic achievement above and beyond traditional socioeconomic status (SES) indices. A second purpose was to determine whether the findings of environmental effects research for smaller-size cities differ from studies which investigate larger urban centers. The study also sought to identify potential ways neighborhoods could be meaningfully classified in ways that might aid future research, and the possible presence of schools that succeed despite a profile that says they should not. Achievement test results of schools (N=61) from two Midwest …

Institutional Climate And Institutional Effectiveness At Three Community Colleges, Connie S. Buckner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to explore the impact of employee morale, as manifested in institutional climate data, upon institutional effectiveness; and (2) to determine the extent to which information generated by climate survey data was used in developing and implementing change initiatives at each of the institutions studied. Three institutions were selected for this multiple site case study. Four sources of data from each institution were used to provide a "picture" of institutional climate. These sources of data were (a) the Personal Assessment of the College Environment (PACE) climate survey, (b) institutional self-study reports, (c) reaffirmation …

Changing Initial Teacher Education: Limitations To Innovation In The United States, Australia And The United Kingdom, Neville Hatton

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In 1996, the University of Sydney implemented a two-year postgraduate form of initial teacher preparation, the Master of Teaching degree. The program incorporates an integrated core study based on use of a distinctive case methodology, together with reflective approaches and portfolio assessment. After meeting practicum requirements, candidates will enter an internship with a conditional “licence to teach”. This paper will examine the processes which led to the devising and introduction of the M.Teach, including factors which could hinder achievement of its goals. Conditions for revision and innovation in Australia will be compared with those applying in the United States and …

Interrupting The Institutional, Narrative On Teacher Training: The Potential Of School-Based Teacher Education, Carol Hogan, Barry Down Nov 1996

Interrupting The Institutional, Narrative On Teacher Training: The Potential Of School-Based Teacher Education, Carol Hogan, Barry Down

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Currently, teacher education is at the crossroads. Stimulated by a plethora of government reports and inquiries there are cries for reform, restructuring and change. As teacher educators we have grappled with the complexities, contradictions and tensions emanating from these reform efforts on two fronts. At the institutional level, we have suffered the alienating consequences of restructuring through budget cuts, staff sackings, 'efficiencies', and the casualisation of academic work. At the collegial level, we have struggled to make sense of the "teacher training business" and what it means to be a teacher and teacher educator in this increasingly hostile environment (Bullough …

Effective Teaching, Peter Westwood

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper I intend to support the hypothetical statement attributed to Socrates in Murray's (1994) article, namely that 'Excellent teaching is that which produces learning and understanding.' If I am wrong in what I say it is your business to take up the argument and refute me.

Citizenship Education: Australian And Singaporean Perspectives, Richard Berlach Nov 1996

Citizenship Education: Australian And Singaporean Perspectives, Richard Berlach

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The issue of what it means to be a citizen of a country is currently on the educational agenda in both Australia and Singapore. It seems that over the years, both nations have realised that the schooling system is a powerful and effective vehicle through which a country’s united vision can be disseminated, and through which individuals can be encouraged to make a valuable contribution to the national good. For a variety of reasons, however, the nature of a united vision appears to be problematic for both Australia as well as Singapore. With both countries being considered, this paper presents …

Middle School Ld Math Teachers: Are They Following Regular Educational Programming Or Instituting Specialized Programs?, Sandra A. Meyer May 1996

Middle School Ld Math Teachers: Are They Following Regular Educational Programming Or Instituting Specialized Programs?, Sandra A. Meyer

Theses & Honors Papers

A review of the literature indicated that students with learning disabilities graduate from high school without a solid background in mathematics. It is the responsibility of the special education teacher to find and implement methods to reverse this trend. Regular education middle school math teachers and learning disabilities middle school teachers were surveyed to determine whether or not these teachers currently use similar instructional methods. Questions included what types of methods each group were using in their math classes. Respondents were asked to indicate if they often used a discovery method, peer tutoring, drill and practice, small group activities, or …

Impact Of Tennessee's Value-Added Assessment System On School Superintendents' Decision-Making, Kay M. Goode

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem related to this study was to develop a clearer understanding of the impact of Tennessee's Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) on school superintendents' decision-making responsibilities in view of school reform efforts at both the national and state levels during the last decade. The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between three independent variables (superintendents' years of experience, superintendents' perceived degree of personnel acceptance, and superintendents' perceived technical assistance availability for data analysis and interpretation of results) and superintendents perceptions of the system on eight aspects (student learning; teacher performance; school system success; educational accountability; educational equality; assessment …

Perspectives On Missouri V. Jenkins: Abandoning The Unfinished Business Of Public School Desegregation 'With All Deliberate Speed', José F. Anderson

All Faculty Scholarship

This essay examines the continuing struggle that centers around whether this country will allow public elementary and secondary school officials to use race-conscious, and sometimes aggressive, tools to eliminate the continuing presence of predominantly single race schools in most of our urban centers. Despite the promise of Brown v. Board of Education, the efforts to desegregate schools in some areas of America appear to have eliminated only the legal barriers to truly integrated schools. Many school systems have simply resegregated through demographic shifts prompted by urban decay and "white flight." In Missouri v. Jenkins, the Supreme Court struck down certain …
