Human Capital And Economic Growth: Theory And Policy., Bidisha Chakraborty Dr. Aug 2009

Human Capital And Economic Growth: Theory And Policy., Bidisha Chakraborty Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Growth theory is one of the most important branches of macroeconomics. Growth theory helps us to understand the intertemporal behaviour of a dynamic economy and to understand the properties of the long-run rate of economic growth. It identifies the factors causing the deviation of the actual rate of growth from the socially efficient rate of growth and analyses the effectiveness of various policies in removing this gap. It analyses the condition of stability of the long-run equilibrium and also attempts to establish links between the long run equilibrium and the persistence of underdevelopment. With the emergence of the ‘new’ growth theory, …

The Association Of Athletic Expenditures With Student Academic Achievement In Arkansas Secondary Public Schools, Mike A. Skelton

Student Theses and Dissertations

Data on public secondary schools in Arkansas were gathered for two separate school years, 2005-2006 (N = 278) and 2006-2007 (N = 279), to determine if there was an association between athletic expenditures and student academic achievement. Prior to this research, there was little empirical evidence demonstrating any effect that athletic spending has upon student academic achievement throughout the State of Arkansas or the United States. In addition, there were two pieces of research found, one in Texas and one in Arkansas, indicating that athletic spending has a somewhat negative association with student academic achievement. The major purposes of this …

Parts Of The Whole: Approaching Education As A System, Dorothy Wallace Jun 2009

Parts Of The Whole: Approaching Education As A System, Dorothy Wallace

Numeracy

An educational system is a highly coupled complex system of inputs, outputs, sensors and actuators. Using an engineering perspective, this column begins the process of naming and categorizing parts of the system. It then focuses on teachers as one part of a large system, and analyzes the forces that influence how teachers work, and that draw or repel individuals to a teaching career. The growing shortage of qualified teachers can be explained by properties of the system as a whole that determine the context in which teachers do their job.

This paper is about tracing global links in national education reforms in Pakistan. The paper tries to describe globalization and its general effects on national policies. It particularly highlights the effects of globalization on education reforms, which are: competitiveness-driven, finance-driven and equity-driven. In light of these global education reform patterns the paper explores the major educational reforms being pursued in Pakistan since 1990s. The paper argues that globalization has seriously challenged the national reform policies, which are now becoming more and more globally driven. Rather than out rightly rejecting all global policies, engaging critically with them is the stance of …
