DUO A combined Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with Knowles' A Separate Peace. DUO B combined the same Twain novel with Hentoff's I'm Really Dragged But Nothing Gets Me Down. The Language Of 5 1/2-Year-Old Children From Homes Where Macedonian, Vietnamese And An Aboriginal Tribal Language Are Used As The Language Of The Home, A. L. Mcgregor

Research outputs pre 2011

Throughout the world migration patterns and changing attitudes towards education and other cultures have led over the past three or four decades to a remarkable growth in the learning of second or foreign languages. Within this area the learning of English by speakers of other languages takes up the largest numbers and is to be found in every part of the globe.

Nevertheless to date comparatively little is known of processes and patterns in second language development. Evidence on phonological and semantic development is exceedingly skimpy. Hernandez (in Ervin-Tripp 1970), Malmberg (1945), Wode (1976) and Ervin-Tripp (1974) have examined the …

Results Of Kindergarten Roundup Screening: Rural Versus Suburban Children, Karen Mumma May 1979

Results Of Kindergarten Roundup Screening: Rural Versus Suburban Children, Karen Mumma

Student Work

Language is the vehicle for learning and the child who does not possess adequate language skills is handicapped in all areas of school instruction. Additionally, society evaluates child and adult in the academic setting, socially, and on the job by their ability to manipulate the English language. The school's accelerating expectations of entering kindergarteners has put additional pressures on the majority of children. The research in developmental linguistics has shown that a certain level of maturity must be reached before tasks can be learned. The problem for the entering kindergartener whose language development is depressed is compounded.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation was to verify research information concerning perceived locus of control (PLC) on a population sample composed of 154 Filipino-American students in Stockton Unified School District. Perceived locus of control is a personality construct derived from Julian Rotter's social learning theory. Rotter posits that the probability of the occurrence of a particular behavior is determined, not only by the importance of the goal to the individual, but also by his expectancy that this goal will be achieved as a consequence of the behavior. PLC refers to an individual's perception of the causal relationship between his …

Problem: The problem was divided into two parts. The first part investigated the question whether students who were taught reading comprehension skills by the PIRAMID objective-based approach showed a greater gain than students who were taught the same skills by use of the basal reader approach. The second part was to ascertain the degree of concordance between results of the criterion-referenced test (CRT) and results of the norm-referenced test (NRT).

Purpose: The purpose was twofold: (1) to compare gains in reading comprehension achievement of an experimental group with gains of a control group, and (2) to compare the pretest and …
