Coping, Pain Severity, Interference, And Disability: The Potential Mediating And Moderating Roles Of Race And Education, Annmarie Cano, Ainoa Mayo, Matthew Ventimiglia
Psychology Faculty Research Publications
Researchers have demonstrated that certain types of pain coping are correlated with less pain severity and disability and that there are differences between Caucasians and African-American pain patients in their use of specific coping strategies. However, the extent to which racial group differences exist in the associations between pain coping strategies and pain severity, interference, and disability is unclear. Furthermore, the role of education in these associations is uncertain. We recruited a diverse community sample of individuals with chronic pain and their spouses to examine this issue (N =105). Participants completed the Coping Strategies Questionnaire, Multidimensional Pain Inventory, and Sickness …
Academic Capabilities And Disadvantaged Students: The Role Of Institutions, William Elliott Iii, Margaret Sherrard Sherraden
Academic Capabilities And Disadvantaged Students: The Role Of Institutions, William Elliott Iii, Margaret Sherrard Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
Notwithstanding the far reaching intellectual and practical contributions of Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy, researchers have suggested that it may not adequately address the role of institutions. This paper suggests that traditional measures of self-efficacy underemphasize institutional factors. This may have important implications, especially for considering the circumstances of disadvantaged groups. It may be productive to think of self-efficacy as a multidimensional construct that includes personal and institutional dimensions. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we examine how self-efficacy theory can be expanded to account for the social and economic realities of disadvantaged groups and lead to empirical work that can inform policy …

The I Can Save Program: School-Based Children's Saving Accounts For College, Margaret Sherraden, Lissa Johnson, William Elliott, Shirley Porterfield, William Rainford
Center for Social Development Research
This paper examines an innovative college savings program for public elementary school children. The project is based on the proposition that children will gain financial knowledge and be more likely to view college as an attainable goal because they are accumulating savings to help pay for higher education. As the latest in a long history of school-based savings programs, this program pioneers the idea of matched savings in which children and family savings in the students’ accounts are matched one to one up to a maximum of $3,500. Findings suggest that the principal, teachers, children, and their families are enthusiastic …

College Life Styles, Life Stressors And Health Status: Differences Along Gender Lines, Terence Hicks, Eboni Miller
College Life Styles, Life Stressors And Health Status: Differences Along Gender Lines, Terence Hicks, Eboni Miller
Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education
The ability of students' social supports, such as friends from high school and family, to effectively lessen stress often wanes during students' transitions to postsecondary institutions (Ensel and Lin, 1991; Moss, 1973; Schutt, Tatjana and Rierdan, 1994; Thoits, 1995). It's easy to intuit why this happens-During this major life change, most students add miles between themselves and people they have relied on for 18 years, break up with their significant others and promise to email the best friends they were used to seeing after school each day. College, most often the best years of a student's life, at its first …
Effective Letter Identification Activities For K-1 Children: A Handbook For Teachers, Luann Nicole Jensen
Effective Letter Identification Activities For K-1 Children: A Handbook For Teachers, Luann Nicole Jensen
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project is to provide K-1 teachers with a handbook of effective letter identification activities. Letter identification is a pre-requisite reading skill that students must have in order to be successful readers and to prevent reading difficulties later on. This handbook can be implemented by teachers of kindergarten or first grade children who need a letter identification intervention. The lessons in this project were developed to be paired with explicit, intensive teaching during the intervention to help remediate a child's weakness in identifying letters.

Understanding Student Self-Disclosure Typology Through Blogging, Vernon B. Harper, Erika J. Harper
The Qualitative Report
Significant research indicates that student self-disclosure plays an important role in the learning experience and producing positive learning outcomes. Blogging is an increasingly popular web tool that can potentially aid educators by encouraging student self-disclosure. Both content analysis and focus groups were used to assess whether student self-disclosure reveals in descriptive, topical, and evaluative categories. The results indicate that blogging encourages student self-disclosure, and the implications of these findings are also discussed.

The Economics Of Education: A Case Study Of Wachusett Regional High School, Carly E. Holbrook
The Economics Of Education: A Case Study Of Wachusett Regional High School, Carly E. Holbrook
Economics Honors Papers
[Introduction]Over two thousand years ago, Aristotle said, “the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.” (Peter 1977: 173). This study will attempt to determine some of the important factors about the economics of high school education in the United States. Schools exist to serve children, their parents, and society at large, and these three groups do not always have identical interests. Therefore, education has many goals besides the obvious one of increased cognitive ability, and the best methods for achieving the desired effects have not been agreed upon. Economists label the process by which education creates these outcomes …

Lawrence V. Texas Overrules San Antonio School District. V. Rodriguez, John H. Ryskamp
Lawrence V. Texas Overrules San Antonio School District. V. Rodriguez, John H. Ryskamp
ExpressO
San Antonio School District v. Rodriguez used the scrutiny regime to decide whether there was an Equal Protection right to housing. However, Lawrence v. Texas abolished the scrutiny regime. So how do we evaluate whether there is an education right under Equal Protection? The right to education in the Texas Constitution shows us that we use the liberty Equal Protection right to determine if state laws are essential to education; this is the meaning of Lawrence's rule that laws are not permitted respecting liberty which do not "substantially further a legitimate state interest." Note that this takes substantially from intermediate …

Workforce Competencies And Work -Based Learning In Maryland Community College Nursing Programs, Richard F. Ammon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study assessed whether Maryland community college students who participated in the first semester of a nursing work-based learning clinical experience during the fall 2004 semester perceived that they developed basic workplace competencies necessary to work effectively in the workplace. The total population of the study consisted of 264 nursing students from eight Maryland Community Colleges. The research questions guiding this study were answered using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and an analysis of variance (ANOVA).;Major findings indicated that contrary to the hypothesis of the study, instead of showing a gain in competency scores, eight of nine workplace competencies decreased and three …

The Relative Effects Of Education And Cognitive Complexity Of Employment Experience On The Rate Of Cognitive Decline In Elderly Women, Janet M. Lundahl
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis examined the lifetime exposure of women's employment on cognitive functioning and cognitive decline in late life.
From the Cache County Study on Memory, Health, & Aging data, a sample of 2,588 women, aged 65 and older gave retrospective occupational history and were screened using the Modified Mini-Mental State Exam at study entry and approximately 3 years later. Non-demented women were used.
Ordinary least squares regression was used cross-sectionally and longitudinally to test the association between cognitive complexity level of the longest job and baseline cognitive status, and rate of cognitive decline over approximately 3 years.
Cross-sectional analysis revealed …
Assessing Student Learning Outcomes In Health Professions Service -Learning Courses, Tracey K. Anderson
Assessing Student Learning Outcomes In Health Professions Service -Learning Courses, Tracey K. Anderson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Service learning is a pedagogical method that is currently on the rise in health professions schools as a method of meeting Healthy People 2010 objectives (Narsavage, Lindell, Chen, Savin & Duffy, 2002). The intended result for participating students is an increased awareness of health care issues, civic responsibility, and course content in this learning experience. However, there is no clear assessment documentation that shows health professions students are meeting the intended learning outcomes. Eyler (2000) indicates that outcomes in service learning have not been "well studied and relatively little attention has been given to defining learning outcomes that would be …
Finding The Constitutional Right To Education In San Antonio School District V. Rodriguez, John H. Ryskamp
Finding The Constitutional Right To Education In San Antonio School District V. Rodriguez, John H. Ryskamp
ExpressO
In Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court abolished the scrutiny regime because it impermissibly interfered with an important fact, liberty. And yet, even in earlier cases which ostensibly upheld the scrutiny regime, it is difficult to see that the Court ever did so to the detriment of facts it considered important. In short, the Court often (always?) found itself raising the level of scrutiny for a fact in the same case it upheld the regime, leaving us to wonder if the scrutiny regime ever actually had any effect at all, or even whether the Court felt it was relevant. As …

Response Cards In The Elementary School Classroom: Effects On Student And Teacher Behavior, Shannon Mckallip-Moss
Response Cards In The Elementary School Classroom: Effects On Student And Teacher Behavior, Shannon Mckallip-Moss
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has examined the effects of response card use at various grades levels including elementary, middle, high school, and community college. These studies provide convincing evidence that incorporating response cards into group instruction helps improve learning outcomes. However, the majority of these studies focused solely on learning outcomes, typically assessed through the administration of tests and/or quizzes. The present study examined the effects of response cards on learning, and expanded the research by assessing effects on disruptive student behavior and the quantity and quality of interactions between teachers and students. A second grade teacher and two students were exposed …
