Quality Of Available Mates, Education And Intra-Household Bargaining Power, Sonia Oreffice, Brighita Bercea Jan 2007

Quality Of Available Mates, Education And Intra-Household Bargaining Power, Sonia Oreffice, Brighita Bercea

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper further explores the role of sex ratios on spouses’ bargaining power, by focusing on educational attainment in order to capture the qualitative aspect of mate availability. Using Census and Current Population Survey data for U.S. metropolitan areas in year 2000, a quality sex ratio is constructed by education brackets to test the effect on the intra-household bargaining power of couples in the corresponding education bracket. We argue that a relative shortage of suitably educated women in the spouse’s potential marriage market increases wives’ bargaining power in the household while it lowers their husbands’. Additionally, we test the prediction …

The researcher used triangulation to compare and contrast participant observations, volunteer comments, and adolescent interviews to form a theory about their level of self-concept. The researcher then referred to the data collected during the literature review to compare the self-concept of economically disadvantage youth with their more affluent peers. Through this comparison, it was found that while the research supports the theory that adolescents from poverty-stricken environments tend to show …

Application Of Emotional Intelligence In Elementary Education Classrooms, Sabrina D. Farmer

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The following research project investigates the research on emotional intelligence, how it is used in the classroom, how it leads to student success, and how educators can encourage personal emotional inquiry and emotional intelligence in social and personal situations. Social Power In School Consultation Relationships: Examining The Roles Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Social Dominance Orientation, Hyyon Palmer Jan 2007

Social Power In School Consultation Relationships: Examining The Roles Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Social Dominance Orientation, Hyyon Palmer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the cultural portrait and complexity of the United States continues to grow, schools' need for culturally competentEducational practices has become imperative. Often times, school psychologists' influence on a student'sEducation occurs indirectly through consultation with direct service providers, specifically teachers. Improving effective multicultural consultation relationships may lead to betterEducational outcomes (e.g., academic and social skills) for students (Ingraham, 2000). Research on consultation indicates that teachers prefer noncoercive power styles when working with school psychologists (Erchul, Raven & Whichard, 2001). One method for increasing effective consultation relationships is to better understand why teachers' prefer certain types of social powers styles. The …

Personalization Efforts And The Relationship To School Climate In Select Michigan High Schools, Karl A. Pilar

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The American high school is on the verge of a reform movement like that seen in American middle schools throughout the early and mid-1990s. In 1996 the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) released its recommendations for reform in the study Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution. Among these are recommendations that call for high schools to become smaller, less bureaucratic, and more responsive to student needs, where students feel a sense of belonging. Hoy and Miskel (2001) defined school climate as a “relatively enduring quality of the school’s environment that is experienced by participants, affects their behavior, is …

The Scholar And Her Servants: Further Thoughts On Postcolonialism And Education, Nita Kumar Jan 2007

The Scholar And Her Servants: Further Thoughts On Postcolonialism And Education, Nita Kumar

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

The hypothesis of the paper is twofold. By juxtaposing the two subject-positions of mistress and servant, moving between one and the other to highlight how each is largely constructed by the interaction, we illuminate the questions of margin and centre, silence and voice, and can ponder on how to do anthropology better. But secondly, to the work of several scholars who propose various approaches to these questions, I add the particular insight offered by the perspective of education. Because one of the subject-positions is that of ‘the scholar’, someone professionally engaged in knowledge production, the new question I want to …

While it may not be possible for law schools to train students completely within three years for the practice of law, we can come much closer to this goal and make the transition to professional life an easier and more productive one. This article explores the common traits of members of the generation comprising today's law students who prefer the label Millennial to others because of their expressed wish not to be associated with Generation X. The article discusses ways to enhance clinical education and teach lifelong learning skills so students can continue developing their problem solving expertise long after …

Critical Autonomy: Investigating Social Class And Education, Peter-John Giampietro Jan 2007

Critical Autonomy: Investigating Social Class And Education, Peter-John Giampietro

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation develops the concept of critical autonomy as a theoretical framework to guide responses to social class oppression in schooling. The project is grounded on Cheryl Misak and C. S. Peirce's arguments about inquiry and their implications for holding knowledge claims, especially claims to self-knowledge. As a result, critical autonomy presupposes the need for engagement in a community of inquiry. Unlike other theories of autonomy that may acknowledge that autonomy is nurtured socially but is realized in isolation, I argue that critical autonomy is enhanced through the constant process of inquiry with other inquirers. Thus it is always a …

More Than Simply "Hanging Out": The Nature Of Participant Observation And Research Relationships, Julie Frances Simpson Jan 2007

More Than Simply "Hanging Out": The Nature Of Participant Observation And Research Relationships, Julie Frances Simpson

Doctoral Dissertations

Participant observation is a research activity used in qualitative inquiry, particularly ethnography, where the aim is to understand the meanings and experiences of social actors. Researchers employing this activity take part in people's lives as a way of learning about them and their culture, and to gain understanding of social life processes. Often these activities in the field are referred to as "hanging out": that is, interacting with participants in an uncontrived fashion as they go about their daily lives.

Participation observation is multifaceted: participant observation is conducted within the framework of scientists' own and others' life worlds; participant observers …

Urban Middle School Teachers' Efficacy Change Resulting From Project Adventure's Year -Long Respect Curricular Intervention: A Quasi -Experimental Design With Corroborating Data, M Brooke Moran Jan 2007

Urban Middle School Teachers' Efficacy Change Resulting From Project Adventure's Year -Long Respect Curricular Intervention: A Quasi -Experimental Design With Corroborating Data, M Brooke Moran

Doctoral Dissertations

Over 30 years of research highlight the effect teachers' beliefs about their teaching abilities (i.e., teacher efficacy) have on their professional actions (i.e., teachers' effectiveness). Yet the literature addressing this connection lacks extensive insight into how to raise teachers' efficacy. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Project Adventure's RESPECT Program in raising middle school teachers' efficacy in four northeastern urban public schools.

This pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study tracked 68 teachers' efficacy change over the course of one school year. Teacher Efficacy (TE) change was measured using the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale's (TSES) following subscales: Student …

Voices Of The Poor: Poverty And Growth In Albania, Magda Tsaneva Jan 2007

Voices Of The Poor: Poverty And Growth In Albania, Magda Tsaneva

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

This paper uses three waves of panel surveys at the household level to study growth and poverty in Albania over the period 2002-2004. It attempts to answer two main questions. The first question is directed at finding the micro determinants of growth and aims to expose the obstacles households face to improve their economic situation. The main focus of the analysis is to investigate the importance of health, education, and infrastructure indicators for income growth. The second question asks whether growth in Albania during the period 2002-2004 has been pro-poor. I find that there is some evidence for a convergence …

The Association Of Lung Cancer Mortality With Income And Education In Kentucky Counties, David A. Gross Jan 2007

The Association Of Lung Cancer Mortality With Income And Education In Kentucky Counties, David A. Gross

Center of Excellence in Rural Health Presentations

Lung cancer, the primary cause of cancer death in the United States, is particularly problematic in Kentucky, which has the nation’s highest rate of adult smokers. In fact, each Kentucky county exceeds the national rate for per capita lung cancer deaths. This project analyzes the relationships between lung cancer deaths, high school graduation rates, per capita personal income and adult smoking – and whether statistically significant differences exist among the variables between Kentucky’s Appalachian and non-Appalachian counties.
