Untangling The Ivy: Discovering Vincentian Service Learning At Depaul University, Howard Rosing Ph.D. Apr 2010

Untangling The Ivy: Discovering Vincentian Service Learning At Depaul University, Howard Rosing Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Howard Rosing explains how community-based service learning has been implemented throughout curricula at DePaul University from 1998 to 2008. At the time the article was written, he was the executive director of the Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning, which oversees DePaul’s service learning courses. To do so effectively, the Center cultivates an atmosphere of respect among its staff and reflection on its own operations and on those of the university hierarchy. This is to ensure it does not promote injustice itself. Universities have historically treated surrounding communities as “laboratories for scholarship and ultimately institutional prestige,” and as groups without …

What Would Vincent Study Abroad? Option For The Poor And Systemic Change For The Development Of Socially Responsible Leaders, Marco Tavanti Ph.D., Heather Evans M.S.

Vincentian Studies

The effectiveness of the DePaul University School of Public Service Chiapas Program is evaluated according to “Vincentian values of experiential learning, systemic change, and the option for the poor.” Including students’ own words, the article summarizes what participants learn as they work directly with poor persons, their leaders, indigenous organizations, local NGOs, and Mexican academic institutions in Chiapas. As Marco Tavanti and Heather Evans write, the program’s goal “is not only to increase knowledge and skills but to challenge and transform cultural attitudes, learn from context, and engage in professional collaboration and dialogues for social change.” The value of system …

Mercury In The Environment: Field Studies From Tampa, Bolivia, And Guyana, Joniqua A'Ja Howard Mar 2010

Mercury In The Environment: Field Studies From Tampa, Bolivia, And Guyana, Joniqua A'Ja Howard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tampa (US), Guyana (SA), and Bolivia (SA), are geographically, socially, economically, and politically unique which make them ideal sites to study issues of mercury and sustainability. Mercury’s innate ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems poses a severe threat to both human and environmental health. The most vulnerable populations affected by mercury consumption include coastal communities, children, women of child-bearing age, the indigenous poor and persons with high environmental/occupational exposure factors. Communities in the regions of Florida, Bolivia, and Guyana whose diets are high in fish and are environmentally/occupationally exposed to mercury may be at a higher …

Women In The Down Economy: Impacts Of The Recession And The Stimulus In Massachusetts, Randy Albelda, Christa Kelleher

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

The “Great Recession” is affecting everyone in one way or another, but not everyone is affected in the same way. Women’s and men’s work (both in and out of the labor force) still differs, so we can expect that the economic crisis has had a distinct impact on women as well as their families. This policy brief discusses how the down economy has differentially impacted women and men in Massachusetts and the gendered implications of federal stimulus spending. It also identifies potential opportunities to promote gender equality as the United States, and Massachusetts in particular, attempt to move beyond the …

Learning Sustainable Development: Chimeneas De La Esperanza, Miriam V. Mollan Gundersen Mar 2010

Learning Sustainable Development: Chimeneas De La Esperanza, Miriam V. Mollan Gundersen

Social Sciences

Social inequality and environmental degradation are motivating informed young people into action and connecting impoverished regions of the world with students in more developed nations. This Social Sciences senior project is to analyze an alternative development model designed by a group of Californian university students. The project, named Chimeneas de la Esperanza, is designed to help impoverished Nicaraguan women start a ceramics business. The major hurdle of this mission is to establish a market for the ceramics product. Energy efficient ceramic stoves and smoke ventilating chimneys would benefit the community and avoid an impacted crafts market. The project encompasses ideas …

Assets And Liabilities, Race/Ethnicity, And Children's College Education, Min Zhan, Michael Sherraden Feb 2010

Assets And Liabilities, Race/Ethnicity, And Children's College Education, Min Zhan, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

This study examines the extent to which household assets and liabilities are related to disparities in children’s college attendance and college graduation among White, Black, and Hispanic families. Results indicate that, after household assets are considered, a substantial portion of the Black-White gap in college attendance and college graduation disappears, and a small portion of the Hispanic-White gap in college graduation also disappears. Separate analyses of children from each racial/ethnic group further indicate that family income and financial assets are related to White children’s college attendance and graduation, but nonfinancial assets and unsecured debt are associated with college attendance and …

The Contextual Impact Of Income Inequality On Social Capital And Adverse Social Outcomes, Jeannie Schiff Jan 2010

The Contextual Impact Of Income Inequality On Social Capital And Adverse Social Outcomes, Jeannie Schiff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An interdisciplinary approach to policy and governance recognizes that many social welfare problems are interrelated, and policy-makers have long recognized a need to address the root causes of these problems. There is much evidence that income inequality is one of these root causes but research suggesting the effect of income inequality is mediated by social capital has complicated the relationship, as have theories of causality that take different approaches. This study takes an ecological approach to these issues to test the relationship between income inequality, social capital and selected adverse outcomes proposed by the relative income hypothesis. The relative income …

Hybrid Graduate Education: Assessing Student Comfort With Technology Interventions, Martin Sivula Jan 2010

Hybrid Graduate Education: Assessing Student Comfort With Technology Interventions, Martin Sivula

Technology

This pilot study examines a cohort of fourteen, doctoral, graduate students over the last year and one-half of their hybrid (both face-to-face and on-line) program. This study’s purpose was to determine their level of comfort with the new technologies (Web 2.0 software) both before and after intended learning interventions. Several theoretical models concerning technology users’ preferences, attitudes, tasks, Task-Technology Fit (TTF), and student engagement provided frameworks for a conceptual model for the eventual course design, assignments, and learning interventions (Hersey & Blanchard, 1977; Davis, 1986; Davis et al., 1989; Goodhue & Thompson, 1995; Zigurs & Buckland, 1998; Kearsley & Shneiderman, …

Academic Excellence And Civic Engagement: Constructing A Third Space For Higher Education, Nancy Cantor Jan 2010

Academic Excellence And Civic Engagement: Constructing A Third Space For Higher Education, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

Once again, the times demand that higher education play a transformative role. The full range of our disciplines can and must combine to make a difference. As Bruce Katz of the Brookings Institution has observed, the Great Recession “has unveiled an economy dangerously out of whack, frenzied with consumption, wasteful in its use of energy, more adept at increasing inequity than sharing prosperity.” In such a world, as Martha Nussbaum wrote this month, the future of democracy itself will depend on our ability to educate “complete citizens who can think for themselves, criticize tradition, and understand the significance of another …

The independent variables included summer school participation, gender, SES, and ethnicity. The dependent variables included the student post-test NWEA MAP scores in each of three subject areas (language usage, …
