Interagency Communication By Urban Child Welfare Stakeholders Regarding Educational Decisions, Tracy Glantz

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Children in state care face numerous challenges, particularly when it comes to equitable access to education. Many of the issues affecting this access are beyond the youths' control and stem from the communication among various child welfare stakeholders. This qualitative ethnographic study examines the communication patterns between key environments, including the home, school, and broader child welfare community, to identify strengths and gaps in these communication patterns. By exploring the forms of communication, the frequency of interactions, and the duration of each occurrence, the study aims to better understand the dynamics among different stakeholders regarding educational decisions made for youth …

The Impact Of Legislation And Implementation Of An Emergency Department Medications For Opioid Use Disorder Program On Buprenorphine Administration, Jacob Manteuffel, Joseph Miller, Nadine Jawad, Alexis Maroney, Revelle Gappy, Nora Sharba, Grant Zydeck

Medical Student Research Symposium

The emergency department (ED) plays a critical role in addressing a wide range of healthcare needs and can be the first point of contact for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). Buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, is a medication that helps treat OUD. On January 12, 2023, federal changes removed a major barrier, allowing all clinicians to prescribe buprenorphine. Later in 2023, a Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) program was implemented in a high-volume free-standing ED. We aimed to review the impact of these changes on buprenorphine administration.

We conducted a retrospective chart review of buprenorphine administration and ICD …

Another Gap On The Rota: A Scoping Review Of Attrition From Specialty Training In Secondary Care, Hannah Gillespie, Megan E.L. Brown, Nicola Brennan, Bryan Burford, Gillian Vance

Peninsula Medical School

Background The healthcare workforce is in crisis. Despite a competitive selection process, a substantial number of doctors leave specialty training (ST) programmes prematurely. This attrition causes increased costs for the National Health Service, exacerbates workforce shortages and threatens quality and safety of care. It also increases pressure on trainees who remain, further compounding the risk of attrition. There is an urgent need to understand why doctors leave ST in order to find ways to maintain the training pipeline from ST to consultant. Objectives We aimed to understand what is known about why doctors choose to leave ST programmes in secondary …

Native Maintenance Booklet, Plaster Creek Stewards

Print Materials

Your new garden is an ecological haven for pollinators. By replacing grass with native plants, you will be providing food and a resilient habitat for bees, butterflies, birds, and so much more. Many of our native insects rely on these native plants to survive and reproduce, and many birds rely on these insects to reproduce and feed their young. By bringing these plants back into our yards, we are giving them a huge helping hand. This booklet provides details on maintaining Michigan native landscapes, including recommended maintenance schedules, identifying native plants versus weeds, and garden advocacy suggestions.

“Like A Fish Being Judged By My Ability To Fly”: Barriers To Accessibility In Postgraduate Study, Molly E. Thompson

Publications and Research

This research paper explores the unique accessibility challenges faced by disabled postgraduate students and what can be done to address them. Testimonies and formal studies alike show how disabled graduate students have to deal with stigmatizing attitudes from their instructors (especially if they hold intersectional marginalized identities) on top of systemic barriers such as strict deadlines, unsustainably heavy workloads, inaccessible travel requirements, and disability services that are not suited to undergraduate needs. These problems are especially prominent in medical school where demands on time and energy are especially rigorous. To address these issues, disability service programs must be reformed to …

From Hope To Frustration: The Impacts Of The Withdrawal Of Usaid On Education And Development In Morocco, Kathryn Koss

Morocco: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Cultural Transformation

Following a series of executive orders administered by the Trump administration in January 2025, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID abruptly withdrew from Morocco, leaving an impact on education and development. Using qualitative methods, including six semi-structured interviews with USAID personnel, partners, and local NGOs, the study captures the personal, financial, and operational effects of this sudden cessation. The paper highlights how USAID's localized, inclusive approach had catalyzed significant educational initiatives and collaborative development models, many of which were disrupted or completely dismantled. Key findings reveal that the termination of USAID activities not only jeopardized active programming—such as …

Church And State Collide: The Constitutional Implications Of Louisiana's Ten Commandments Bill, Kimberly Aliaga Apr 2025

Church And State Collide: The Constitutional Implications Of Louisiana's Ten Commandments Bill, Kimberly Aliaga

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

: In the summer of 2024, Louisiana’s governor signed House Bill 71 (HB71), which mandated all K-12 schools to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms. While proponents of the bill claim it serves a secular purpose to promote morality and historical literacy, precedent cases like Stone v. Graham (1980) suggest otherwise. By requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in public classrooms, HB71 is a violation of the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause found in the First Amendment. This article analyzes the bill by comparing it to similar cases, and by applying both the Lemon and Endorsement Test to …

Dissertations (1934 -)

Throughout the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, the United States government weaponized education to assimilate Native Americans culturally and politically into mainstream American society. From 1871 into 1930s, the federal government forced Native children to attend boarding schools, separating Native children from their communities and assaulted their Indigenous cultures and languages. By 1960, Native communities in Alaska and Arizona began to advocate for greater control over the educational opportunities available to their children, while, simultaneously, Native employees in the federal government worked to change the outcomes of federal Indian education policy. Native communities demanded greater influence in school administrations, lobbied the …

Faculty and Staff Publications

Medical education is in the process of a pedagogical revolution. Traditional lectures are playing a progressively smaller role, with more of the content being delivered through student-centered small-group sessions. Problem-based learning (PBL) has become a centerpiece of education for many medical schools, in large part because of its focus on the learners identifying their own knowledge gaps. As junior scientists seek faculty appointments in institutions focused on healthcare education, they will find that skills in PBL are valued by the academic community. Among the necessary skills is the capability to lead efforts in PBL case writing. The cases, each of …

Results of this project include educational visuals on (1) the basics of Equine-Assisted Services, (2) the impact of …

Gender Sidelining In Schools And The Scourge Of Single Sex School Leadership, Kelley King, Jessica Fink Mar 2025

Gender Sidelining In Schools And The Scourge Of Single Sex School Leadership, Kelley King, Jessica Fink

St. John's Law Review

Concerns about unequal gender representation have plagued virtually every workplace in recent decades. In countless professions, even those in which women comprise a majority of the workforce, leadership positions are dominated by men. Often, the inability of women to rise within the professional hierarchy stems not only from overt acts of sex discrimination, but also from more subtle and nuanced bias in the workplace—bias referred to in other research as “gender sidelining.” This sidelining seems particularly paradoxical when it arises in professions in which women already have been funneled due to their gender—including the education sphere. In this way, the …
