"It Does N'T Seem Like A Big Deal": A Media Ecology Analysis Of Digital Teen Sexuality And Sexting Education, Allison Marie Metz
Theses and Dissertations
In the state of Illinois, any person in possession of sexually explicit photos of a minor, even if the subject is oneself, can be prosecuted as a felon for possession of child pornography and be required to registered as a sex-offender (705 ILCS § 405). Concurrently, the recent trend of ‘send nudes’ depicts humorous ways to request the transmission of sexually explicit photos, increasing this act as a normative practice for young people (Bradford, 2018; Thomas, 2017). This trend is incongruent with Illinois statue (705 ILCS § 405) and school administrative policy about transmitting sexually explicit photos of a minor. …
Exploring The Effects Of International Wage Differences On Brain Drain, Austin Martin
Exploring The Effects Of International Wage Differences On Brain Drain, Austin Martin
Undergraduate Economic Review
This paper examines how international wage differences affect brain drain by comparing the effects of skill-specific wage differences on low, medium, and high-skilled emigration. Previous literature explores qualitative factors behind migrant flow, but there is little focus on the role of wage differences in individuals’ decisions to emigrate. A relatively new data set on emigration rates by education level and a modified gravity model provide a unique analysis of bilateral migration flows. This paper finds that wage differences may have a significant and positive effect on and low-skilled emigration, but a less significant effect on high-skilled emigration or brain drain.

Encapsulating Educational Design For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lauren Praeuner
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This paper is a thesis/creative project hybrid split into two parts. First, it examines different aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the symptoms experienced by those on the spectrum, and the guidelines that parents, medical professionals, and educators should follow to ensure a holistic approach to the care and education of children with autism. The text also notes some of the considerations that designers should review when designing educational facilities for these individuals, as well as few precedents that successfully do so. The second part of the paper presents my team’s architectural studio project, contributed to by UNL students Lindsay …

Medical Student Research Symposium
Background: Cadaver dissection remains integrated into the curriculum of numerous medical schools. Aspiring physicians acquire the opportunity to work directly with the human body, which is intricate and tangible, yet have minimal exposure to certain procedural skills applicable to patient care during the first year of their medical training. Our aim was to incorporate the cadaver as part of a process to introduce procedures to a class of first year medical students in order to improve their confidence and skill in performing these procedures in patients.
Methods: During medical gross anatomy at Wayne State University School of Medicine, three workshops …

Medical Student Research Symposium
As of 2016, 85% of the homeless population within Michigan were covered under Medicaid health insurance. Despite insurance coverage, many depend on student-run free clinics to meet their health care needs, however, few clinics are available to provide specialty-based care. The Community Homeless Interprofessional Program (CHIP) student-run free vision clinic in Detroit, Michigan works to address vision care. With great emphasis on preventative optical care, student-run vision clinics have provided satisfactory preliminary screenings to the homeless population. The purpose of this study is to determine if pre-clinical year medical students appropriately address vision care needs of the homeless population, as …

To look at what is misrepresented, omitted, and included within primary and intermediate grade level trade books, 32 books were scrutinized. The trade books being analyzed were found to have some historically representative and misrepresentative elements …
Reconsidering Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology Curriculum, Eric Michael Walsh
Reconsidering Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology Curriculum, Eric Michael Walsh
Theses and Dissertations
In the past 50 years several convergent factors have spurred unprecedented change in anatomy and physiology (A&P) instruction. An explosion of biomedical knowledge, an increased demand for students well-versed in A&P, and decreased resources for the course has provoked a vast array of research. However, most studies employ one of three strategies to enact change: testing the effectiveness of new pedagogies, exploring the utility of new technologies, or documenting learning in new contexts. By comparison, a much smaller body of research focuses on changing the A&P curriculum to improve student learning. To address this gap, the musculoskeletal curriculum for an …

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
Among students receiving behavioral health and special education services, racial/ethnic minority students are consistently overrepresented in settings separate from general classrooms. Once separated, many young people struggle to improve academically and face significant difficulty upon trying to return to a general education setting. Given the complex, ongoing, and multifaceted nature of this challenge, racial/ethnic disproportionality can be identified as a “wicked problem,” for which solutions are not easily identified. Here, we describe our community-engaged research efforts, eliciting perspectives from relevant partners in an ongoing dialogue, to better integrate diverse stakeholders’ perspectives when attempting to address such disparities. We conducted focus …

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of socioeconomic status indicators on physical and mental health. This study hypothesizes that higher socioeconomic status indicators are correlated with better physical and mental health while examining the extent of these relationships. In order to determine this, previous literature regarding health and socioeconomic status will be evaluated. The results of the General Social Survey (2016) will be used to test the effects of socioeconomic status on health using regression analysis. The responses of 1418 participants were used in this analysis, controlling for age, gender, race, political ideology, and religiosity. Two …
