Love Your Neighbor: An Educational Strategy To Cultivate Compassion In Adolescent Males, James Allan Benson Jr
Love Your Neighbor: An Educational Strategy To Cultivate Compassion In Adolescent Males, James Allan Benson Jr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
When challenged to identify the greatest commandment in the Law, Jesus Christ famously included “love your neighbor” in his response, making love foundational for all followers of Christ. Compassion is a key element that serves to demonstrate biblical love; sadly, today’s culture often minimizes or discourages compassion. In ten years of chaplaincy at the secondary school level, this author has seen too many Christian young men finish their high school journey without a foundation in love through compassion. This thesis project will utilize existing resources for academic and biblical research, as well as interviews of 25 high school males, to …

Effects Of Standardized Self-Care Behavior Education On Self-Efficacy Outcomes In Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus, Nishita Patolia Bsn, Rn, Dnp Student
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
An evidence-based practice (EBP) project was implemented in a primary care setting to decrease Hemoglobin A1c (HgbA1c) levels and increase self-efficacy in Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) diagnosed individuals. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 30.3 million adults have diabetes in the United States, and one in four do not know they have it (CDC, 2017). It is a disease that can be managed and reversed with standardized self-management education. Self-management interventions can improve diabetes knowledge and encourage patient participation in caring for their health (Flode, Iversen, Aarflot, & Haltbakk, 2017).
The purpose of this evidence-based project was …

Insulin Injection Re-Education For Improved Glycemic Control, Daniela Shon
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Title: Insulin Injection Re-education for Improved Glycemic Control
Background: Patients on insulin therapy often continue to show suboptimal glycemic control. Data from adult patients with T2DM have demonstrated that 56.1% had poor control, despite adherence to treatment, oral and injectable. Poor glycemic control stems from many sources, including poor self-efficacy regarding insulin dosage adjustment, inaccurate insulin dosing, expired insulin, lipohypertrophy of the injection site and technique, and equipment issues.
Purpose: This project aimed to implement and assess the efficacy of re-education in the insulin injection technique for improved glycemic control.
Methods: This project was conducted based on …
Education For Health Care Providers: Medical Cannabis, Morgan C. Rohl
Education For Health Care Providers: Medical Cannabis, Morgan C. Rohl
Theses and Graduate Projects
Health care providers are consistently unaware of the implications, efficacy, and resources correlated with medical cannabis and cannabidiol. Thus, patients are uninformed about medical cannabis as a treatment option for their qualifying conditions. Informative educational sessions present a method to facilitate specialty knowledge development regarding medical cannabis and cannabidiol. In this scholarly project, six nurse practitioners and two allied staff members, attended a PowerPoint presentation followed by an open discussion regarding cannabinoids. Examination of post-presentation survey results indicated that felt more informed about the physiology and efficacy of cannabidiol, more aware of the resources for them, and had increased comfort …

Assisting Children With Velocardiofacial Syndrome Who Have Developmental Disabilities And Delays Associated With Speech, Communication, And Education, Mckenzie K. Holty
Honors Thesis
Children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) have a variety of complex needs. Research shows that VCFS is characterized by a combination of medical problems, developmental delays, and learning disabilities, which vary from child to child. This syndrome also puts adolescents at a higher risk for developing psychiatric and psychotic disorders. The complexity of symptoms that can arise from VCFS can influence the ability of these children to communicate, socialize, and learn effectively. This literature review aims to discuss literature for caregivers, educators, and physicians to aid children effectively and understand their challenges relating to speech, communication, and education. This topic is …
Classroom Activities That Promote Transformational Leadership In Nursing Students, Holldrid Odreman, Harmen Hummel
Classroom Activities That Promote Transformational Leadership In Nursing Students, Holldrid Odreman, Harmen Hummel
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Transformational leadership skills are essential for safe healthcare practice. Assessment of healthcare students' degree of transformational leadership skills before graduation is important when developing future healthcare leaders. Therefore, optimization of focused educational activities helps students recognize their dispositions toward practical leadership attributes and behaviours before they graduate from a nursing or healthcare program. Researchers studied the degree of difference between students' perceived individual transformational leadership behaviours or traits before and after participating in a focused in-class group activity.
Implementing A Uniform Burden Of Proof For Title Ix Coordinators During The Investigation Stage: An Objective And Efficient Approach To Title Ix, Sara Krastins
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Imagine it is 1972. Congress just enacted Title IX of the Education Amendments, and it is signed into law by President Nixon. For the first time in United States history, legislators recognize sex discrimination as a pervasive issue in educational environments. The law is enacted with the purpose of ending sex discrimination in college sports; for the first few years, that is the only purpose Title IX serves.
Gradually, Title IX expands into the realm of sexual and interpersonal violence on college campuses. Yet despite the law’s expansion, compliance with Title IX is neglected. No entity actively monitors schools’ …
Peer-Led Education Expedites De-Prescribing Proton Pump Inhibitors For Appropriate Veterans, Mary H. Bowman
Peer-Led Education Expedites De-Prescribing Proton Pump Inhibitors For Appropriate Veterans, Mary H. Bowman
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Costly proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been widely prescribed since the 1990’s for prevention and treatment of ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Evidence published since 2012 demonstrates risks associated with taking PPIs longer than eight weeks. Primary care providers (PCPs) mostly de-prescribe PPIs for persons not meeting criteria for long term use. Many patients resist discontinuation.
A three-month evidenced based practice (EBP) education project was conducted by a nurse practitioner to improve PCP peer de-prescribing successes with appropriate patients in an outpatient California based veteran Primary Care Clinic. Fifteen PCPs were pretested about usual care practices between two comparable …

Black Women Survive Breast Cancer With Community-Based Care, Shelley I. White-Means, Jill Dapremont, Barbara D. Davis, Tronlyn Thompson
Faculty Presentations
PURPOSE Community-based breast cancer support agencies who address non-medical, social determinants of health needs that serve as barriers to maximizing breast health outcomes may play a vital role in mitigating breast cancer mortality. They share a common emphasis on addressing social, economic, and psychological needs of breast cancer survivors and those at risk of breast cancer. This paper is third in a series of papers exploring why the rate of breast cancer mortality is two times higher for African American women than white women in Memphis. We sought insights from community-based breast cancer support agencies because they have a close-up …

The Ocean Lifeguard Intervention Continuum: A Cognitive Aid For Surf Lifeguard Education, William A. Koon, Ryan M. Gates, Shane Scoggins, Paul Andrus, Jack A. Futoran
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Ocean lifeguards are constantly engaged in beach risk analysis, required to efficiently evaluate a variety of environmental and other factors quickly in order to triage and prioritize who needs help. Teaching these skills is a challenge for introductory training programs. We sought to improve new lifeguards’ understanding of the interaction of various risk components in the beach environment and aid decision-making related to when a lifeguard should intervene in a situation. We developed a two-part cognitive aid for introductory ocean lifeguard education depicting individual and interacting elements of a beach goer’s risk of drowning or injury and the process by …

Abstract
Background: The 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 53 percent of people that misused pain relievers in the past year received them from a friend or relative. The NIDA describes that from 2002 to 2008 that drug abuse in service members went from 2% to 11%. Often patients are initially prescribed and introduced to opioid medication for acute pain. One such circumstance is in the perioperative period that could provide an opportunity to promote opioid-sparing techniques to reduce the exposure to opioids.
Purpose of Project: To assess discharge medication characteristics and reinforce discharge medication instructions …
Expanding And Improving High-Quality Early Care And Education In California: Is There Alignment Between Policymakers And The Public?, Heidi Schmidt Emberling
Expanding And Improving High-Quality Early Care And Education In California: Is There Alignment Between Policymakers And The Public?, Heidi Schmidt Emberling
Dissertations
Although there is widespread agreement about the life-long benefits of high-quality childcare and preschool, access for all children in California is limited. The negative effects of this inadequate landscape are borne predominantly by children living in poverty, and middle-income families who do not qualify for subsidies and cannot afford full-fee care. This mixed-methods study examines specific factors that impede expansion and improvement of childcare/preschool in California, from the perspective of five diverse policymakers. Findings reveal a variety of policy solutions in the areas of funding, teacher workforce, quality of care, policy development, and public perception of the importance of high-quality …

Fall Prevention Assessment in the Intermediate Care Patient Population
Falls cause greater than 600,000 deaths per year and are the most common injury in people over 65 years of age. Fall prevention in the acute care setting has been identified as key goal in the most recent JCAHO review process. Falls on an intermediary care unit lead to an increased rate of morbidity, delayed discharge, and excess cost expenditure.
Even with appropriate evidence-based tools in place, Hospital A’s intermediate care unit, recorded an increased rate of falls; the highest rate in its health care system. An investigation identified factors contributing …
Midline Movement: The Positive Effects On Student Behavior In A Kindergarten Classroom, Ashley Ludlow
Midline Movement: The Positive Effects On Student Behavior In A Kindergarten Classroom, Ashley Ludlow
Education | Master's Theses
Educators are realizing the unrealistic expectations on students to be quiet and sit still for extended periods of their day (Donnelly & Lambourne, 2011). Some educational advocates have been reintroducing movement into the school day in response to research that indicates the importance of extracurricular activities on developing the whole child (Hannaford, 1995). Movement, connection, touch, play, and creative endeavors have been shown to be critical components to teaching students to be well-rounded individuals (Hannaford, 1995). This study explores how movements and activities that cross the midline affect a student's focus and ability to learn in the classroom. Cultivating an …
The Impact Of Social Inclusion From The Perspective Of The Neurotypical Peer, Alexandra Corinne Gopar Zavaleta
The Impact Of Social Inclusion From The Perspective Of The Neurotypical Peer, Alexandra Corinne Gopar Zavaleta
Education | Master's Theses
This research aims to understand the benefits and overall impact of social inclusion from the perspective of the neurotypical peer. My research analyzes three strategies that are widely used to promote the acquisition of social skills for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; Social Skills Training, Peer-Network Implementation, and Pivotal Response Training. Currently, existing research fails to thoroughly investigate how social inclusion impacts the neurotypical peer, but rather focuses on the impact that social inclusion has on the individual with ASD. While this is vital information, it is also crucial to understand from the perspective of the neurotypical peer, as they …
The Foot And The Flag: Patriotism, Place, And The Teaching Of War In A Military Town, Brian Gibbs
The Foot And The Flag: Patriotism, Place, And The Teaching Of War In A Military Town, Brian Gibbs
Democracy & Education
This manuscript describes the patriotism taught and not taught by nine teachers to the children of soldiers near a military base in the American South. The nine teachers, all participants in a qualitative study, detail the pressures endured and the pedagogical and curricular decisions made as result. The teachers experienced social and political pressure from the broader community to avoid controversial or complex issues, fear that complicated teaching troubling more simple notions of patriotism would stress or possibly traumatize their students (the children of soldiers), and pressure to teach within the district-assigned curriculum map. The teachers responded in different ways. …
Dialectic Of Empathy. A Book Review Of Educating For Empathy: Literacy Learning And Civic Engagement, Dan Deweese
Dialectic Of Empathy. A Book Review Of Educating For Empathy: Literacy Learning And Civic Engagement, Dan Deweese
Democracy & Education
In Educating for Empathy: Literacy Learning and Civic Engagement, Mirra describes the value of teaching “critical civic empathy” in K–12 literacy classrooms. Distinguished from standard curricular uses of empathy that stress politeness at the level of the individual, critical civic empathy challenges students to take active steps toward questioning how imbalances of power and privilege arise and what assumptions should be questioned in order to address those imbalances. Mirra examines various teachers who center social issues in their literacy classrooms through the use of literature, the techniques of high school debate, research methodologies that see students as knowledge producers, …

Beyond The Invisible Barriers Of The Classroom: Iengage And Civic Praxis, Kevin Russel Magill, Victoria Davis Smith, Brooke Blevins, Karon N. Lecompte
Democracy & Education
Research literature suggests students need to engage in actual civic experiences; however, in most cases, teachers feel unwilling or unable to facilitate experiences beyond the formal classroom setting. In this project, we sought to understand the relationship between social studies teachers’ civic ideology, pedagogical approaches, and instructional decision-making through their engagement in an action civics camp. The project is part of a more significant effort to help critically minded teachers engage in more activist praxis by moving past the often-limiting ideological barriers of the classroom. By activist praxis, we refer to the ways a teacher’s ideology informs pedagogy related to …
What Are Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Rural School District Needs To Effectively Educate Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kari Lyn Pugh
What Are Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Rural School District Needs To Effectively Educate Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kari Lyn Pugh
Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has continued to rise each year. This fact has significance in the area of education. The rise in prevalence of autism means an increase of students with autism in schools. Educators have the need to be prepared to provide an appropriate education for these students but may not have training or resources to be effective. Rural communities may have even more concerns about education for students with ASD due to geographic isolation and the lack of available educators in their area trained to support the specific needs of these students. To determine the …

Increased Knowledge Of Autism Spectrum Disorders Reduces Stress Levels In Staff Caring Directly For Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder., Katelyn E. Triplett
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a group of disorders that affects approximately 1 in 59 children (Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2019). This group of disorders can cause deficits in communication, social relationships, and those with the diagnosis may exhibit undesirable behaviors as well as restrictive and repetitive behaviors (RRBs). There is limited education given to healthcare providers on this group of disorders, making it difficult to care for these patients. This study was conducted to determine if the stress level of staff that directly care for patients with ASD, at a pediatric behavioral health hospital, decreased following an educational presentation over …

Can Expressive Arts Therapy Help Caregivers Of Persons With Asd?: A Community Engagement Project Capstone Thesis, Chie Mitsui
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Taking care of persons with autism spectrum disorder is not easy, especially in a school setting where there are more rules and cultures to follow. There is high turnover among our staff. I have witnessed several staff leave our school because of the burden of the work. The experience made me disappointed. I am sure that our students feel the same way as I do; they just don’t know how to express their feelings when they realize staff is no longer with them. They trust the staff and the staff leave, sometimes even without saying goodbye. I was sad each …
Refugees, Identity, And The Fight For Education: A Study Of The Cultural And Political Context Of Education Policy For Syrian Refugees In Neighboring Host Countries, Kristen Cain
Senior Theses
The Syrian Refugee Crisis has significantly impacted Syria’s surrounding countries, in particular Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan, who have welcomed the largest number of Syrian refugees. International organizations have recognized the importance in providing education opportunities for the millions of refugees who have left Syria. Each host country has enacted its own education policy to accommodate for the refugees, but a significant number of refugee children remain out of school. This paper argues that it is possible to make improvements to the education policies, and that these policies have been affected by the historical, cultural, and political contexts in the host …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Early pregnancy is a challenge for girls in Kenya that often has immediate effects on their educational opportunities, future implications for their social, health, and economic outcomes, and negative impacts on their children. For girls to achieve well-being in early and late adolescence, no single-sector intervention—whether education, health, wealth creation, or prevention of violence—will be adequate. The Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya (AGI-K) delivered multisectoral interventions to over 6,000 girls aged 11–15 in two marginalized areas of Kenya: the Kibera informal settlement in Nairobi and Wajir County in Northeastern Kenya. These interventions were carried out for two years (2015–17) and comprised a …

Documenting Desire: Addressing The Educational Needs Of Undocumented English Learners, Alejandra Sofia Torres
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
While research on motivation in second language acquisition is copious and the interest in undocumented youth within the education field is growing, there is a need to closely examine the intersection of being both undocumented and an English Learner (EL) and how this intersection often limits ELs, especially those in underserved schools. Using ethnographic methods, this dissertation documents the educational experiences of thirty-one Spanish-speaking ELs in a predominately of color, urban, working-class high school in the southeastern United States. EL participants were ages fourteen through twenty with varying non-citizen immigrant statuses. Semi-structured interviews and field notes were collected during the …
