The Impacts Of Authentic Learning On Student Outcomes, Evan Sheppard, Cameron Conner
Dissertations
This dissertation explores the evolving American education system, emphasizing the role of authentic learning in bridging the gap between schooling and employment, especially in the context of the modern post-pandemic student. Authentic learning, characterized by hands-on activities and real-world applications, is posited as a solution to the skilled labor shortage impacting the economy. This study delves into the history and current practices of authentic learning, examining various programs and strategies implemented in educational settings. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, qualitative data was collected through interviews with recent high school graduates to assess the impact of authentic learning on their post-secondary trajectories. …

Teaching Newton’S Laws Of Motion In Biomechanics Using Game-Based Pedagogy For High School Teachers’ Professional Development, Stuart A. Evans Dr, Charlene Willis Dr
ISBS Proceedings Archive
It is important to consider teachers’ professional development (PD) when they are tasked with teaching Newton’s Law of motion in biomechanics to high school students for the first time. Physical education (PE) teachers regularly use the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) pedagogy to teach physical activity to students. TGfU is a pedagogical model which originated in the 1980s with the main objective of promoting game-based learning in physical activity and sport. However, research involving if the TGfU pedagogy can be used to impart practical and theoretical knowledge to teachers when teaching Newton’s Laws of Motion in biomechanics is limited. The …

Economics ETDs
Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) are historically disadvantaged communities that face discrimination on the grounds of their lower social positioning in society. This dissertation comprises 5 Chapters. Chapter 1 provides a brief outline regarding the stratification in India based on Caste and illustrates the importance of studying the economic consequences of caste-based discrimination in India. Chapter 2 analyses the effect of caste-based residential segregation in rural India and its effect on marginalized children's education outcomes. The results show that caste residential segregation dampens the education outcomes for children belonging to SC/ST communities with no discernable effects on students …

Depression Screening And Education For Immigrants To Increase Access To Care, Viktoriya Ivantsova
Dissertations
Abstract
Problem: Immigrants are at risk for developing mental health disorders due to multiple factors including social, cultural, or economic factors. This can result in a lower quality of life and an increased chance of further disabilities. Although immigrants are at increased risk for the development of mental health disorders, studies show that utilization of available services and resources are low. Additionally, organizations that provide services to immigrants may not be implementing screening and psychoeducation.
Methods: This quality improvement (QI) project followed a descriptive, observational design along with an educational intervention. Using convenience sampling for recruitment, Russian and/or Ukrainian adults …

A Wrong Made Right: A Qualitative Cross-Case Comparison Study Examining Program Influences On College Readiness, Persistence, And Student Success Outcomes At A Predominantly White University And Historically Black College, Richard Harper
Theses and Dissertations
The increase of underprepared students entering college decreases persistence and graduation rates at postsecondary institutions, ultimately declining degree attainment and social mobility of American citizens (U.S. Department of Education, 2016, McGuire, 2018). ACT, Inc. (2017) data suggests that overwhelming percentages of high school graduates are academically underprepared and are not college-ready. Moreover, an overwhelming number of academically underprepared students come from historically underrepresented populations. To help increase access and college readiness among these populations, specialized programs and services must be implemented to ensure these students are successful at the college level. The Dr. Charles W. Donaldson Scholars Academy is a …

Focused Interventions To Decrease Inpatient Falls, Alyssa Nicole Watchmaker Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Falls are the most commonly reported safety incidence in the hospital setting (Morris R. et al., 2017). Because falls may be a result of many factors, evidence shows that multicomponent fall interventions best reduce fall rates (Bargmann et al., 2020; Dykes et al., 2010; Dykes et al., 2020; Strini et al., 2021). In this project, a needs assessment identified a need for fall prevention strategies to reduce fall rates on inpatient units.
Setting: A step-down/telemetry Cardiovascular Intervention Unit (CVI) (15 beds) and Cardiovascular Unit (CVU) (12 beds) in a suburban private hospital.
Purpose: The purpose of this evidence-based project …

Preventing Wounded Warriors: Addressing Gaps In Education Of Joint Protection Strategies For The Rotc, Joseph Rodriguez
OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
"In the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), injury during the first 9-weeks of training has the highest risk for injury (Sefton et al, 2016; Radzak et al, 2020; Wooldridge et al, 2022). Most injuries are musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) and occur most of the time within the joint or supporting structures (Chiaramonte, 2019; Radzak et al, 2020). The cadets often do not fully understand the consequences to occupational domains from injuries, and fewer than half are confident to prevent injury (Wooldridge et al, 2022). Education of ergonomics in cadet-specific domains and non-specific domains is a barrier to cadets being independent of …

A Resident Led Newsletter Is A Powerful Communication Tool, Jonathan Brown, Zuhair Ali, An Dao, Mike Wong, Rajeev Raghavan
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
Communication with stakeholders for a graduate medical education (GME) program depends on shared visual and written content. Residency training programs are embracing social media as a communication channel. However, curated information that may only be viewed by subscribers or followers is difficult to archive and may appear overwhelming to novice users. An electronic, printable newsletter may be a unique communication tool for training programs to share information among residents, faculty, and hospital administration.
Methods
We published a monthly electronic newsletter sent to all residents, teaching faculty, and additional stakeholders in our internal medicine residency program. We conducted an electronic …

The Effectiveness Of Pressure Injury Prevention Through Educational Intervention Within The Long-Term Care Setting, Ashley Nunley
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The prevalence of pressure injuries, particularly in older adults, continues to be disturbingly high, especially in those suffering from chronic diseases and frailty, bringing a higher awareness of applied preventive and therapeutic measures (Jaul et al., 2019). In long-term care nurses, will an educational, evidenced-based pressure ulcer prevention program impact health outcomes by increasing nurses’ knowledge, compared to no intervention over four weeks? The Pieper-Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer/Injuries Knowledge Test was used to evaluate the nurse's pressure injury knowledge pre- and post-educational intervention. The paired t-test was used to analyze the pre-and post-test data from the educational intervention. This DNP project …

How Do Teachers Make Sense Of New Learning About Culturally Responsive And Sustaining Education?, Kristine Mustillo
Student Theses
The education of Black citizens has historically been unequal and plagued with deficit based approaches that result in the under-education and over-disciplining of Black youth in schools, with dire implications. Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education (CRSE)aims to change the narrative by honoring the racial, ethnic, linguistic and cultural differences of students of color who are marginalized in a school curriculum, featuring a pedagogy that empowers students (Ladson-Billings, 2021). Educators often report that they understand CRSE in theory but there is confusion when putting the theory into action and there are other challenges faced when working in current social and political …

Global Best Practices In Education: A Conceptual Definition And Criticisms, Vincent Chidindu Asogwa
Global Best Practices In Education: A Conceptual Definition And Criticisms, Vincent Chidindu Asogwa
Journal of Research Initiatives
The "Global Best Practices" concept is subjective and varies from many perspectives based on the indicators used. As such, there needs to be a standardized and universally accepted definition of global best practices in education, which hinders the effective identification, adoption, and benchmarking of these practices across countries and educational institutions. This ambiguity challenges teachers, students, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners seeking to understand and apply global educational best practices. Hence, this explorative study investigated the conceptual definition and criticisms surrounding the concept of global best practices in education. A narrative literature review methodology was employed to systematically search, select, and …
