Adjustment Of South African Education Program Students And South African Higher Education Program Students In America, Ronald T. September
All Master's Theses
The self-perceived adjustment of black South African undergraduate and graduate students in two educational exchange programs in America was investigated by means of a questionnaire administered through the mail during Fall 1985. Sixty-one female and male students at various American institutions participated in the study. The results showed that students perceived themselves to have achieved a high level of personal, social and academic adjustment, and that the undergraduate females, graduate females, undergraduate males and graduate males do not differ significantly in their perceived adjustment. Recommendations for further adjustment strategies are put forward.

Care During Death, Grief And Loss: The Effects Of A Workshop And Clinical Experience On Student Nurses' Attitudes And Actions, Lynda Armstrong Wilson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Problem. Nurses, members of a society which tends to avoid and deny death, grief, and loss, are frequently in situations where they must interact with persons experiencing grief from death or loss. Often educational experiences have done little to prepare student nurses to cope in positive and supportive ways. Student nurses need to develop self-awareness of their attitudes and anxieties toward death, loss, and grief; modify negative attitudes; and develop a repertoire of interpersonal skills to support persons experiencing grief. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine if academic, and experiential learning could influence the clinical performance of …

In the past decade, numerous educational leaders have been critical of the quality of achievement of the educational system of the United States. Declining scores on standardized tests and the Scholastic Aptitude Test, illiteracy and the inequality of educational opportunities for America's youth were a few of the concerns documented by educational leaders. In an effort to correct some of the existing problems, reform measures have been delineated by various commissions and educational authorities. Never, perhaps, in the history of local communities has the educational system been recognized openly as being interwoven with the community as it is now. In individuals' aspiration, for better lives and as a primary component of the equation of education and community, education is viewed as an avenue of promise. There can be no doubt of its universal acceptance as the key to the most fervently desired goals, security for the future and an understanding of self and others.

New Jersey V. T.L.O.: The Supreme Court's Lesson On School Searches Symposium On Education Law., Gerald S. Reamey
St. Mary's Law Journal
Considerable disagreement persists as to the fourth amendment rights of students within schools. Particularly, this disagreement regards the extent to which fourth amendment rights possessed by students may frustrate reasonable attempts by educators to maintain the order necessary to preserve an educational environment. In New Jersey v. T.L.O., the Supreme Court considered an argument advanced by the State of New Jersey that the “pervasive supervision” of school children diminishes the legitimate expectation of privacy a child may have in property “unnecessarily” brought to school. The Court concluded that the necessity of maintaining security and order in the educational environment was …

A Desegregation Study Of Public Schools In North Carolina, Ransome E. Holcombe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the desegregation of public schools in a selected southern state between the years 1954 and 1974. In developing the research project that described the elimination of legal biracialism in North Carolina's schools, public sentiment emerged as a major factor. North Carolina's public schools were unusual when compared to other states with dual systems because, despite the fact that the state had one of the largest black populations in the nation, the desegregation drama proceeded peacefully and successfully, albeit slowly. Throughout the twenty-year period that was required to completely eliminate the …

Retrieval Of Divergent Lexical Definitions Of Homographs In Young, Mature And Elderly Adults., Barbara J. Gross
Student Work
The ability to communicate one's needs, desires and knowledge is a basic requirement for succeeding in society. It is an ability that is taken for granted by most individuals for whom mastery seemed automatic. The stages of language acquisition and development in young children have been extensively researched and documented. A wide range of semantic abilities of college freshman also have been investigated. Beyond the traditional college age, eighteen to twenty-two years, little normative data concerning functional language ability is available. Information pertinent to the evolution of language functioning across the adult lifespan would be useful in planning appropriate goals …

Department Of Corrections Personnel Survey: Final Report, Schafer E. N/A
Reports
Education, experience, and training of personnel are frequently used as measures of quality in correctional agencies. This survey of Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC) personnel, conducted in 1984, revealed that employees in all classifications tended to have more than the minimum education or experience required for their positions. Approximately 66 percent of all DOC personnel (N=636) participated in the survey. Of this number, 47.8 percent reported having at least a two-year college degree and 35.1 percent had a four-year degree. Of the corrections-specific respondents to the survey (N=475), more than 40 percent had prior experience in other justice agencies. A …

The problem of chemical abuse is one which affects every citizen of the United States. Alcohol has been used and abused for centuries. Tobacco has recently been shown to cause serious bodily damage. Marijuana, cocaine and heroin are drugs that have become a serious national problem in recent decades (National Survey on Drug Abuse: Main Findings, 1979). Even such common drugs as aspirin and caffeine can be abused, as can drugs prescribed by physicians for medical purposes. Because drug use has grown to epidemic proportions, many individuals and groups are dedicated to the purpose of making our country drug-free by …

Fixation On A Beneficially Aroused Consciousness In The Game Situation, Contingent Upon Hypnosis, In Soccer Players, James Sanders
Student Work
The purpose of this research was to systematically regulate the sport arousal state of soccer players. Hypnosis viewed as an alternate state of consciousness was the vehicle to the beneficial sport arousal state. Once in an hypnotic state, a post hypnotic suggestion was utilized to reproduce that beneficial sport arousal state as players stepped upon the soccer field. The focus was two-fold: First, to determine whether or not a benefical sport arousal state could be attained within the hypnotic state; and secondly, wheather or not a beneficial sport arousal state could be reproduced by post-hypnotic suggestion for a game situation.

The results showed a significant (p=.05) increase in VO2 max (1 min -1) for both the males and females. The women showed a significant (p=.05) increase in V02 max (ml*kg-1 .min-1). No other significant changes occurred within either group. Between group comparisons found a significant (p=.01) decrease …
