Minorities In Higher Education: The Changing North, Judith Kleinfield, Lee Gorsuch, Jim Kerr

ISER Reports

This report examines the educational status of ethnic and racial minorities in Alaska and draws attention to the ways demographic changes in Alaska may affect these groups. The Alaska Native population, as opposed to other ethnic minorities, is the focal point of this study. This is the largest minority group in the state and the one experiencing the greatest economic and social difficulties. This group has been growing in absolute size but not as a proportion of the general state population. A decline in world oil prices has caused the state to be less able to support the expensive delivery …

The survey instrument also incorporated questions intended to identify participating superintendents' opinions on student evaluation with tests from their educational beliefs, assumptions, and philosophical orientations. Two hundred Indiana school superintendents were selected to participate in the study. The method of selection was the stratified random sampling technique. Responses from sixty-nine percent of the two hundred participating superintendents were …

Relative Isometric And Dynamic Endurance Curves For Different Muscle Groups Of The Upper Extremities., Seung Ho Yoon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study analyzed the characteristics of both dynamic and isometric relative endurance curves for four different muscle groups of the upper extremities. College males (N = 56) were tested on the Cybex Isokinetic Dynamometer both isometrically and dynamically on four exercises: bench press, arm curls, shoulder internal rotation and wrist flexion. In all, eight separate exercises were examined. Each dynamic and isometric exercise bout was for 80 and 60 s, respectively and data were recorded ever 4 s. Parameters examined were Maximal Strength, Total Force Output, Relative Total (RT, TFO, divided by 80s or 60s x peak force), and Relative …

Effects Of Sex And Social Influence On Perception Of Physical Effort During Light To Heavy Work By Elite Athletes., Michael Francis Sylva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to investigate the effect of sex and social influence on perception of physical effort during light or heavy work by male and female athletes. Subjects performed three submaximal trials of 27 minutes each on a cycle ergometer at 25, 50 and 70% of maximum oxygen consumption in the presence of a male coactor, a female coactor, and just riding alone. The results indicated that subjects' ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were similar when performing at all three coactor/alone conditions. No significant sex difference in RPE was found. Thus, highly trained male and female atheletes did not …

For At-Risk Students: A Theory Based Alternative Structured School Model, Its Implementation And Evaluation., Suzan Naquin Gaston

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study has been to design, implement, and evaluate an alternative structure to traditional schools, operationalized as the Louisiana State Youth Opportunities Unlimited School. The alternative structure of the school was based on a number of theoretical concepts. The implementation of this structure intended to increase the level of coping skills in student participants who were at risk for dropping out of high school. There were two theoretical models that influenced the design of the LSYOU school. The first model suggests that the socialization of clients is most effective in organizations that are high in scope and …

The Professional Development Needs Of Newly Appointed Principals: Leadership For School Development, Michael J. Harvey Jan 1988

The Professional Development Needs Of Newly Appointed Principals: Leadership For School Development, Michael J. Harvey

Research outputs pre 2011

...The professional development needs of newly appointed principals was identified as an important area for policy development and one which would benefit from research. The appointment of a cohort of new principals is a significant moment in the life of an education system. During a period of system-level change this transition is not without risks, both to the careers of promising educators and to the organisational health of the education system. Understanding of the learning experiences of newly appointed principals would provide critical information for the planning and deli very of professional development for both present and future incumbents of …

Introducing Aids Education In Connecticut Schools, William Sabella Jan 1988

Introducing Aids Education In Connecticut Schools, William Sabella

New England Journal of Public Policy

Most of the nation 's schoolchildren are not infected with the AIDS virus (HIV). Since AIDS is a preventable disease, no one need become infected. In order to protect themselves, everyone, including children, must understand exactly how HIV is and is not contracted. The message of prevention, however, is controversial, since it must include advice on safer sex and drug use.

In 1984, Connecticut was forced to face the issue of a child with HIV infection entering school. The state responded by creating guidelines for prevention of disease transmission in schools and by subsequently developing an AIDS curriculum. Obstacles to …

Behavioral Change In Homosexual Men At Risk Of Aids: Intervention And Policy Implications, Suzanne B. Montgomery, Jill G. Joseph Jan 1988

Behavioral Change In Homosexual Men At Risk Of Aids: Intervention And Policy Implications, Suzanne B. Montgomery, Jill G. Joseph

New England Journal of Public Policy

With more than fifty thousand cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) diagnosed since its initial recognition in 1981 and no cure or vaccine in sight, experts agree that prevention is of the utmost importance. Yet very little research has investigated how existing social-psychological and health behavioral knowledge can be applied to the special circumstances of programmatic responses to AIDS. One of the central aims of our own research group has been to describe the psychosocial determinants of successful behavioral risk reduction among homosexual men, the largest affected group. This work is reviewed and its implications for the development of intervention …

The Role Of Education In Aids Prevention, George A. Lamb, Linette G. Liebling Jan 1988

The Role Of Education In Aids Prevention, George A. Lamb, Linette G. Liebling

New England Journal of Public Policy

The severity of the current AIDS epidemic, combined with the lack of successful biological interventions, necessitates an active educational program as the primary intervention strategy. Health education theories abound, but relatively little definitive application of these theories has been made to the issues involved with HIV transmission: sexual behavior and the sharing of intravenous drug apparatus. Significant behavior changes have occurred in some people, but the consistency of the behavior change may be difficult to sustain. Thus, the authors suggest that health education should be delivered repeatedly in culturally acceptable language and format, by community leaders, and through many different …
