Advisement Effectiveness And Self-Directed Learning: A Comparison Between Traditional And Non-Traditional Students In Selected Regional Universities In Tennessee, James L. Daniel May 1992

Advisement Effectiveness And Self-Directed Learning: A Comparison Between Traditional And Non-Traditional Students In Selected Regional Universities In Tennessee, James L. Daniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because most academic advisement programs were established to accomodate traditional student populations, it was the purpose of this study to compare the effectiveness of these systems as perceived by traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students at three of Tennessee's regional universities. Traditional and non-traditional students were also compared on the extent to which they exhibit self-directed learning. A comparison of mean scores was made for responses made to items contained in the American College Testing (ACT) Survey of Academic Advising, including the total mean score for the Oddi Continuing Learning Inventory (OCLI) between traditional/non-traditional students, full-time/part-time students, students at the three …

A Qualitative Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Issues Programming Process Using Focus Group Interviews., Fred Eugene Baker Jan 1992

A Qualitative Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Issues Programming Process Using Focus Group Interviews., Fred Eugene Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Evaluating programs is a necessary and vital function in the management of all organizations. In 1988, the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) began an intensive statewide process entitled "Issues Programming". This is a qualitative evaluation of that process. The study focused on the perceptions of extension agents and community leaders who participated in the process. Four focus group interviews were conducted, two each for agents and leaders. Geographic site selection provided for participant inclusion from all LCES administrative areas. The groups were asked a series of open ended questions designed to draw from them in-depth perceptions about the process in …

Volunteer Assisted Reading, Linda Laurene Young Jan 1992

Volunteer Assisted Reading, Linda Laurene Young

All Graduate Projects

The problem investigated in this study relates to the need in schools today to find ways of providing educational support assistance for classroom teachers as part of the classroom learning process. With the continued rise in school enrollments, it is difficult for school funding to keep up with growing educational demands. Favorable student-teacher ratio issues emphasize the need to provide additional help for the classroom teacher. Finding additional classroom help has become a major concern; parents' commitments to employment and social obligations have changed their availability to participate at the schoolhouse and have lessened parent-child contact time (Cassidy, 1981). According …

Applying Edgewood V. Kirby To Analysis Of Fundamental Rights Under The Texas Constitution, Albert H. Kauffman Jan 1992

Applying Edgewood V. Kirby To Analysis Of Fundamental Rights Under The Texas Constitution, Albert H. Kauffman

Faculty Articles

State constitutions are affirmative grants of power under which both stated and implied fundamental rights can be sought. A proposed test for fundamental rights under the Texas Constitution looks at three factors: the history of the topic within the Texas Constitution and case law; the actual language used in the controlling provision; and the importance of that value to the people of Texas. The declaration of a constitutional right as fundamental certainly has implications for future relationships between the people and the government.

The Edgewood v. Kirby case has the potential to change much in Texas. The case stands for …

The Success Of Native American Students At Bennett County High School And Parent Involvement, Janet F. Varejcka

Student Work

The history of Native Americans has been checkered. No more so than in the history of their plight for quality education. The concept of racial inferiority was an excuse to push Indians from land they had always occupied. Native American men, women, and children were treated like animals.

Caregiver Education Program, Lesli Demers Jan 1992

Caregiver Education Program, Lesli Demers

Theses

Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive, irreversible disease of the brain. It is not a normal or inevitable result of the aging process. However, as more people live to advanced age, the susceptible population will increase, as will the number of people afflicted with this disease. Alzheimer's Disease presents a challenge by taking away the patient's ability to remember, as well as the ability to learn.

Alzheimer's Disease has been characterized by many professionals as "the thief of minds" (Gewertz 23). Memories of life experiences and even one's own family members fade away leaving the person a stranger to those who …

A Comparison Of Cognitive Abilities Test Scores Of Second Graders From Four Different Preschool Backgrounds, Judy A. Conner Jan 1992

A Comparison Of Cognitive Abilities Test Scores Of Second Graders From Four Different Preschool Backgrounds, Judy A. Conner

Graduate Research Papers

This study focused around a research question involving middle and upper socioeconomic status children: Do public school second graders who previously attended Montessori preschools demonstrate higher cognitive abilities (as measured by the Cognitive Abilities Test) than second graders who attended traditional preschools or did not attend preschool? Although there was a wide variability of scores within each group, t-tests analyses revealed significant differences favoring preschool attenders when compared to those who did not attend preschool, and for Montessori preschoolers when compared to the other groups.
