The Efficacy Of Teaching Conflict Resolution, Joan E. Grigaitis
The Efficacy Of Teaching Conflict Resolution, Joan E. Grigaitis
Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of Conflict Resolution Programs in an elementary school. The question to be studied was whether incidents of disciplinary referrals would be reduced after implementing a Conflict Resolution Program. The entire student population of Simpson Elementary School for the academic years 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 served as subjects for this study. Disciplinary referrals were tallied for the students for the 1994-1995 academic year (i.e., the "control" group or prior to the Conflict Resolution Program). A Conflict Resolution Program was implemented coincident with the start of the 1995-1996 academic year. Disciplinary referrals were …

Center for Social Development Research
Little attention has been given to the non-problematic development and positive life decisions of African American youth. This paper reports findings of 231 African American students. The goal of the study was to assess factors which contribute to their academic grade point averages and intentions to stay in school. The conceptual model employed in this study was the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) which contends that intentions to carryout a behavior is a function of Attitude towards the behavior, Social Normative support for undertaking the behavior, and the Perceived Control of being able to carry out the behavior. In addition …

An Assessment Of Associate Degree Radiography Programs In Virginia: Comparison Between Traditional And Nontraditional Students, Ron E. Proffitt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The increase of non-traditional students in higher education has been a topic of discussion and examination for over a decade. This study compared the non-traditional student with the traditional student in radiography programs in Virginia's community colleges. The purpose of this study was to determine if differences exist between traditional and non-traditional student performance in a structured radiography program. The study hypothesized that there were no differences in academic performance, national board examination scores, and program completion. Focus-group interviews examined themes related to success factors. t-Test analysis indicated significant differences in academic success between traditional and non-traditional learners. Non-traditional learners …

A Comparison Of Teacher-Directed Versus Self-Directed Learning Preferences Of Students At Five Selected Community Colleges: Exploring The Relationships Among Age, Gender, And Academic Majors, Huiming Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the major priorities for community colleges is to focus on the pedagogical tools that will allow students to achieve excellence and quality in curriculum and instruction to meet the changing societal needs (Shearon & Tollefson, 1989). Rapid demographic, social, and technological changes demand that community colleges produce self-directed lifelong learners (Closson, 1996). The study of student learning preferences for more teacher-directed or more self-directed learning is one of the concepts that is important in enhancing teaching and learning practices. The purpose of this study was to examine students' teacher-directed versus self-directed learning preferences in specific courses. The possible …
Therapy Videotape Presentation For Eating Disorder Clients: Development And Evaluation, Benita J. Quakenbush
Therapy Videotape Presentation For Eating Disorder Clients: Development And Evaluation, Benita J. Quakenbush
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Eating disorder clients show low motivation, poor follow-through, and inordinate premature dropout rates in treatment. Earlier studies support the use of pretherapy training to help clients understand the tasks and challenges of therapy. However, a pretherapy intervention, such as showing prospective clients a video that outlines recovery issues and themes, had not yet been developed specifically for the prevalent, recalcitrant problem of eating disorders. Thus, of particular interest to clinicians who treat eating disorders may be the development of a theoretically sound, pretherapy videotape that outlines recovery issues.
One of the purposes of this study was to review prior investigations …

The question which this Major Applied Project seeks to answer is this: "What can a Minority Director do to encourage the university he serves to become aware of the barriers blocking minority students' persistence?" Violence-Prevention Education For The Primary Classroom, Carrie Shaw
Violence-Prevention Education For The Primary Classroom, Carrie Shaw
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This holistic curriculum addresses the many realms in which violence affects children: cognitive, affective, social, and behavioral. A violence prevention thematic unit containing lesson plans, performance tasks, and learning centers has been built around six research-based interlocking components: understanding violence, identifying and expressing emotions, valuing peace, feeling a sense of community, being safe, and resolving conflicts nonviolently. The goal is that through beginning to teach practical violence prevention skills in these six areas in the primary grades (K-3), children will learn how to handle their aggressions and resolve conflicts without the use of violence.

If Teacher Assessment Is The Answer, What Is The Question?, Michael W. Apple
If Teacher Assessment Is The Answer, What Is The Question?, Michael W. Apple
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
Throughout the United States, it is almost impossible not to hear the din of criticism of our educational system. It is supposedly a failure. It does not prepare our children for the rigors of international competition. It is too responsive to "minority" interests and not responsive to "our" common culture. It is inefficient and wasteful. And it has been captured by " producer" (teacher) not "consumer" (parents and the business community) interests.
A number of quite contradictory proposals to "fix" the schools are currently enjoying their place in the limelight. The first is organized around a vision of the weak …

Predictors Of Treatment Adherence Outcome For Hemodialysis Patients, Gregory Sansom Spence-Jones
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine whether a personality variable, conscientiousness, and a coping style, task-oriented coping, could predict hemodialysis patients' adherence to their fluid intake restrictions. The sample of participants utilized in this study was recruited from three Western New York Artificial Kidney Centers located in Buffalo, New York; Kenmore, New York; and Niagara Falls, New York. Seventy-nine participants completed questionnaires; however, only data from 70 patients were included in the analysis. The null hypothesis stated that there will be no significant difference between hemodialysis patients who are adherent to fluid restrictions and those who are nonadherent …
