A Systematic Review Of Cabg Educational Interventions, Susan E. Booton
A Systematic Review Of Cabg Educational Interventions, Susan E. Booton
Leadership Connection
Session preseneted on Sunday, September 18, 2016:
Background: Although there are many approaches in providing discharge education to coronary artery bypass patients, an overwhelming number of patients are readmitted to the hospital within 60 days post discharge. Education provided prior to surgery and discharge may prove beneficial in decreasing the rate of readmissions in this population. Objectives: In post cardiac surgery patients, does an educational intervention compared to no educational intervention affect hospital readmission rates within 60 days? A secondary aim was to evaluate whether or not an educational intervention affects hospital readmission rates within 60 days of discharge.

Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014:
Millions of women suffer every year worldwide as a result of health, economic, developmental problems related to pregnancy and thereafter most suffer from lack of programs that are vital in creating a healthier relationship, family unit and neighborhoods. U.S women are among the highest impacted in particular those living in risk populations. For women who are marginalized or living in poverty areas with most significant health disparities, the risks are particularly critical. Fortunately we are able to offer some of the best care and resources throughout the world here at home, for those …
Educational Interventions For Middle School Students To Improve The Perception Of Nursing As A Future Career Choice, Robin Dianna Evans Matutina
Educational Interventions For Middle School Students To Improve The Perception Of Nursing As A Future Career Choice, Robin Dianna Evans Matutina
Leadership Connection
This study seeks to demonstrate that recruitment interventions geared toward educating middle school students about nursing and nursing specialties would significantly improve the perception of nursing as a future career choice, thereby increasing the number of students who choose nursing as a career. If educating middle school students about nursing significantly increases nursing school enrollment and graduation rates, the nursing shortage may be positively impacted, thus positively impacting health care for society.
Comprehensive Strangulation Education For Health Care Practitioners, Jeanne Parrish
Comprehensive Strangulation Education For Health Care Practitioners, Jeanne Parrish
Leadership Connection
There is no formal strangulation assessment taught to health care practitioners resulting in missed injuries from strangulation and missed opportunities to intervene before violence can escalate in lethality.
The purpose of this project is to develop an educational program for health care practitioners on identifying Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and strangulation, assessing strangulation injuries, how to complete medico-legal documentation of the same and ethical intervention for the family affected by IPV.
IPV affects almost one third of families in the United States (US), and an estimated three women die in the US every day as a result of IPV. Women …

Sleep Hygiene Education For Rural Adults, Amber R. Rogers, Linda Carol Hughes
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
This is a DNP Capstone paper. This DNP project examined what effect a community based sleep hygiene education program had on the quantity and quality of sleep in rural adults. Participants received a 45 minute oral PowerPoint presentation on sleep hygiene and were given an educational handout. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was used to subjectively evaluate a participant's sleep habit pre- and post-intervention (Buysse et al., 1989). Strong evidence suggests that the sleep hygiene intervention improves the overall PSQI global scores and overall quality of sleep. A paired sample t test was calculated to compare the means …

Prenatal Education To Improve Reporting Of Postpartum Depression, Shanda Hensley, Whitney Robertson
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a concerning medical condition that many women experience after delivery. In its mild form, it is manageable but in its more serious state, expert consultation may be needed for evaluation and treatment. Existing literature focuses on the prevalence of the condition, stigma that exists, and postpartum depression education. The exact prevalence of postpartum depression may be unknown due to lack of reporting symptoms, like other mental health condition. The purpose of this capstone project was to determine whether prenatal education improved knowledge and comfortability with reporting symptoms. Implementation of the project included presenting education to pregnant …

Education To Ease Distress In Spouses Of Cardiac Rehabilitation Patients, Kathryn A. Jelsma
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
Spouses of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients can experience overwhelming distress during their partner's recovery, yet interventions to ease this distress are limited. While spouses have the ability to help influence their partner's recovery, little assistance or counseling has been offered to the spouses. Oncology and inpatient cardiology units have found educational packets helpful in reducing spousal distress. Therefore, an evidence-based interventional project to determine if education could ease distress among the spouses of patients who have received a coronary artery stent and enrolled in outpatient CR took place at a Midwestern hospital. Participants were spouses of patients who received a …

Searching For The Path To A More Perfect Union. A Book Review Of Educating For Democracy, Tiffany Berman, Aaron Mccullough, Rabih Murr, David Adams
Democracy & Education
Educating for Democracy presents Walter Feinberg’s vision for the democratic aims of education. Feinberg argues that the evolutionary nature of democracy should be met with a citizenry capable of critical reflection. Education for democracy, then, entails the development of cognitive and affective habits that underpin this critical reflexivity. However, Educating for Democracy asserts that such education should be embedded across curricular areas and not limited solely to civics education. In this review of Educating for Democracy, we begin by providing a broad overview of Feinberg’s foundational arguments presented in the opening chapters. Next, we identify specific themes developed in these …

“Heated, Polarized, And Annoying”: The Characteristics And Consequences Of Affective Polarization In Independent High Schools, Nora Gross, Ellen Bryer, Charlotte E. Jacobs, Jarvis Goosby
Democracy & Education
Affective political polarization, or a sense of political identity-based animosity or distrust, became especially heightened during the Trump presidency. However, we know little about how youth experience such polarization in school and its effect on their political socialization. With unusual access to high-status independent schools, this paper explores the characteristics, consequences, and evolution of affective polarization for adolescents during high school. We draw on open-ended responses to school climate surveys administered at nine schools, 2018-2019, in which many students described experiences of political polarization and partisan hostility present in their schools. These reports of affective polarization increased by students’ grade …

This article investigates the roles of the terms agreement and disagreement in teachers’ talk in Norwegian Grades 1-4 classrooms. Through an exploration of what teachers said and did when they used these terms, five different themes were identified in the teachers’ talk. The teachers tended to use the terms in relation to the process of discussion, the outcome of these discussions, and nuancing the idea of the nature of this outcome; as a function in conversation; and how agreement and disagreement are valuable in different ways. The key finding across these themes and patterns was that the lessons tended to …
Reconstructing Democracy In Polarized Times: Thinking Through/With The Crt Conflicts, Kathy Hytten, Kurt Stemhagen
Reconstructing Democracy In Polarized Times: Thinking Through/With The Crt Conflicts, Kathy Hytten, Kurt Stemhagen
Democracy & Education
In this essay, we consider how reconstructing our ideas about the nature of democracy, and its relationship to education, can help us respond to contemporary challenges. We focus specifically on the ongoing fights about critical race theory (CRT), providing an overview of the CRT controversy—we argue that its cultivation for political reasons has often lessened the possibility of democratic discussions of race, racism, and ongoing white supremacy. Next, we consider how debates around CRT can help us to rethink how we “do” democracy and how to use education to help cultivate democratic habits and values. Finally, we describe three possibilities …
