A Contexted Learning Experience: Instructional Strategies For Effective Teaching For Primary And Intermediate Students From Diverse Ses Environments, R. Suzanne Legg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aim of my three-article dissertation was to investigate the methods employed by effective teachers to promote academic progress among all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Each article addressed perspectives on effective teaching strategies aimed at closing the opportunity gap from three different contexts. These contexts were 1) a focus group consisting of primary teachers, 2) a focus group consisting of intermediate teachers, and 3) personal reflections from observations of both focus groups pertaining to COVID-19. Recent scores from the Programme for International Student Assessment (OECD, 2023) revealed a growing disparity in academic achievement between students from higher socioeconomic …

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Objective
Podcasts are a novel modality for digitally disseminating ophthalmic knowledge, yet minimal information exists on their offerings. This study sought to describe the growth of ophthalmology podcasts, characterize their features, and analyze clinically pertinent content trends.
Materials and Methods
Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Google Search were queried for English-language shows relating primarily to ophthalmology. Ninety-six podcasts and 3,594 episodes were analyzed.
Results
Of the 48 currently active shows, most cover general ophthalmology topics (n = 25, 52.1%) and are run by multiple hosts (n = 29, 60.4%) in both academics and private practice. The majority of podcasts …

The Relationship Between Moral Courage And Professional Confidence And Academic Achievement Among Precertification Radiologic Sciences Students In The United States: A Cross-Sectional Quantitative Study, Kristin M. Beinschroth
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Moral courage and professional confidence are traits that benefit healthcare professionals and students in practice but have yet to be explored in the radiologic science population. This study aimed to discern if relationships exist among moral courage, professional confidence, and academic achievement factors in pre-certification radiologic sciences students in the United States. This cross-sectional, nonexperimental quantitative study employed correlation and regression analyses using abridged versions of the Nurses’ Moral Courage Scale (NMCS) (Numminen et al., 2019) and the Confidence in Managing Challenging Situations Scale (CMCS) (Walsh et al., 2021). Participants exhibited high moral courage and high professional confidence, and both …

The Affects Of Compassion Fatigue On Inner-City High School Educators: A Qualitative Study, Darren Jordan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study is to discover the lived experiences of inner-city high school teachers who suffer from the condition of compassion fatigue. The theory guiding this study is Figley’s Theory of Compassion Fatigue, as it explains how individuals who attempt to assist individuals in stressful situations develop traumatic feelings. The study’s sample consists of 10 participants, all educators with a minimum of 3 years of experience teaching. The study occurs at Big Sky-High School, an inner-city school in Ohio. Data was collected through individual interviews, focus groups, and journal prompts. Data findings discovered the following themes: …

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Despite increased awareness of persistent healthcare disparities, integrating health equity education into medical residency curricula needs urgent expansion. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) mandates addressing healthcare disparities and social determinants of health, but implementation remains insufficient due to pervasive barriers.
OBJECTIVE: To explore residency faculty perspectives at one institution surrounding implementing a health equity curriculum within their programs.
METHODS: Between November 2022 and April 2023, qualitative interviews and focus groups were conducted with residency faculty participants (n = 13) from a large academic medical institution. Participants were recruited via an internal email list directory of program …

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
In Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom, bell hooks writes that “to engage in dialogue is one of the simplest ways we can begin as teachers, scholars, and critical thinkers to cross boundaries.” Hence, this paper explores, through narrative dialogue, teacher and student perspectives on the pedagogical impact of the global pandemic on the process of engaging with and learning about media literacy. By naming and narrating teacher and student experiences and perspectives from a course on gender and pop culture that took place during the Spring 2020 semester, the paper aims to demonstrate the …

Purpose: What problems or issues have you identified and addressed?
Climate change is impacting our patients’ health through increased heatwaves, wildfires, vector-borne illnesses and worsening air quality. Known as a threat multiplier, climate change’s impacts amplify existing health disparities in vulnerable communities. [1] While most clinicians are “concerned” about climate change, only a few have knowledge and skills about climate changes specific impacts on health and how to discuss the implications with their patients. [2,3] While a literature and google search revealed numerous curricula and resources on climate advocacy particularly in medical student education there was limited work in graduate …

Simulation In An Entry-Level Respiratory Therapy Program, Nikonya Godwin
MSHS Student Capstones
In response to the complex clinical environments respiratory therapy students face, there is a need for hands-on learning experiences that closely replicate real-life scenarios. There is a significant gap in the literature regarding respiratory therapy simulation-based training. A new simulation training program is being developed for Catawba Valley Community College’s (CVCC) respiratory therapy program to address this gap. The simulation training program will enhance critical thinking, decision-making, and technical skills by integrating realistic simulated respiratory case scenarios into the curriculum each semester of the two-year program. Central to the simulated program design are high and mid-fidelity multi-functional patient simulators and …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The research focuses on measuring the influence of the use of digital skills on learning, a major issue in current education. The fundamental issue addressed is how digital skills can greatly influence the educational process and the academic success of learners. In the contemporary environment, characterized by rapid technological growth and the increasing integration of digital instruments into the educational sphere, this challenge becomes especially essential. Despite the extensive use of digital technologies, there is a dearth of a comprehensive exam-ination of how these skills influence learning from a multidimensional point of view that incorporates both in-trinsic possibilities and risks. …

Effect Of Virtual Reality Technology On Computer Science/Engineering Based Laboratories Education – A Case Study, Mariam A. Al Nuaimi
Theses
Virtual reality (VR) is becoming increasingly popular and essential in education as institutions strive to incorporate technology in education. In Engineering and Computer Science, students face difficulties in comprehending many abstract complex concepts that are typically studied in Labs. This situation worsens with hardware failure and the lack of pedagogical tools. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the impact of VR environments on learning advanced and complex STEM concepts. We also explore the impact of different human-computer interaction (HCI) techniques including gamification on the learning experience of STEM students. To measure such impact, we developed a VR …

Concerns that transgender individuals have voiced were that they felt healthcare professionals could not effectively care for transgender patients, which may be due to personal or religious beliefs or lack of knowledge concerning the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. Participants included credentialed school nurses and healthcare technicians in secondary education settings. The method consisted of a presurvey, education in the form of a handout, followed by a postsurvey to determine if education was successful. The Wilcoxon …

Characteristics Of Effective Nurse Educators, Bethany C. Klopfer, Emily M. Piech
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Sunday, September 18, 2016:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate what essential personal and professional characteristics needed to produce effective nurse educators. Considering the rise of open nursing faculty positions, and the fact that most nursing educators are over the age of 60, many nursing programs face an increasing shortage of quality professors. It is necessary that in order for the profession of nursing to thrive recruitment must be made of a younger generation of registered nurses interested in higher education. Starting early in the development of a specific set of characteristics may enhance their …
