Differences In Privacy Policies Among Commercial, Educational And Governmental Web Sites: A Cross-Sectional Content Analysis, Rashad Bayramov Nov 2003

Differences In Privacy Policies Among Commercial, Educational And Governmental Web Sites: A Cross-Sectional Content Analysis, Rashad Bayramov

Theses

The present study investigates the differences in the way commercial, educational and governmental Web sites communicate their informational privacy practices through the privacy policies posted on the Web. Specifically, the research identifies differences in the coverage of the Fair Information Practice principles within the analyzed privacy policies. The study suggests that the sharpest dissimilarity exists in the coverage of the principles of Access (allowing Web users to review and update the data collected about them) and Security (protecting users' personal information during transmission and subsequent storage), where commercial sites greatly outnumber educational and governmental sites. However, governmental and educational sites …

The Price Of Education: What Local Control Is Costing American Children., Debra L. Ireland Oct 2003

The Price Of Education: What Local Control Is Costing American Children., Debra L. Ireland

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Wealth and property are not equally distributed in America, and these inequities are exacerbated by the American school system. The current school system is community-centered, meaning children living in poorer districts do not have access to the same level of education as children living in wealthier districts. The comment discusses the impact that budgeting decisions have on community perceptions and expectations, as well as how community favoritism plays a role in the education financing equation. Finally, the author proposes eliminating what is essentially an “educational caste system,” and discusses how to change the attitudes of society and alter the ways …

Con Law Center Amicus Briefs

This case presents the issue of the Ohio Supreme Court’s violation of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment by denying an adequate remedy to successful plaintiffs in a school funding case. In five decisions in the case of DeRolph v. Ohio from 1997 to the present, the Ohio Supreme Court has declared that Ohio’s school funding system is unconstitutional and ordered the state legislature to fix the funding system pursuant to an affirmative, structural injunction.2 To date, however, the state has continually refused to comply with the Ohio court’s injunction by making the required changes in the school …

Health Action Schools Pakistan: Towards School Improvement, Parvez Pirzado, Health Education Team Aug 2003

Health Action Schools Pakistan: Towards School Improvement, Parvez Pirzado, Health Education Team

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

Health education and promotion is a key determinant of quality education particularly in primary schools in Pakistan. This has been affirmed by an action research project entitled Health Action Schools (HAS) headed by Dr. Tashmin Khamis, based at Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED). The HAS project began initially as a three-year (1998-2001) action research project using the Child-to-Child approach in partnership with Save the Children, UK. The objective of the project was to develop prototypes of health-promoting schools in different social and educational contexts in Pakistan. Initially the HAS project was launched in five pilot schools from …

Effects Of Co-Teaching On Student Participation And Math Success On Students With Learning Disabilities In The General Education Classroom, Mia Karen Baldwin

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A Numerous research studies have been conducted to determine the effects of inclusion on academics, few of these studies specify the method used. The purpose of this study was to determine whether co-teaching would increase student's participation in the regular math classroom. The study was conducted in a sixth-grade regular education classroom in which students with learning disabilities were included. The co-teaching consisted mostly of interactive teaching between the regular education and the special education teacher. The subjects were students identified with a learning disability in either math calculation or math reasoning. The results indicated that student participation was not …

A Postcolonial School In A Modern World, Nita Kumar, Som Majumdar

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This essay is about a school, taken not only as an educational project, but as an active historical intervention. A discussion of the school helps us to interpret the history of education, and perhaps all history, with new insight; to understand the nature of modernity in a provincial city; and to fashion an approach to both theory and practice that could be called postcolonial.

Creating Positive Experiences: Increasing Parent Participation In A Low Income Elementary School, Krista Stinson Cayer Jul 2003

Creating Positive Experiences: Increasing Parent Participation In A Low Income Elementary School, Krista Stinson Cayer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has examined the effectiveness of placing parents on a variety of incentive programs which would increase their likeliness to participate in school related activities. That research suggested that establishing school as a reinforcing environment for parents was vital. Due to these findings, this study examined the effects of a token economy on parent involvement at a low-income elementary school. Teachers were trained in the data collection method, and parental behavior was observed on a daily, weekly and bi-weekly schedule. Measures of social validity were obtained through teacher and parent questionnaires.

The data from the research study suggested that …

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison Jun 2003

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison

Missouri Law Review

This Article examines the school voucher debate. Because “the causes of poverty within the black community are both structural and behavioral,” and because the available evidence provides an inferential connection between education and poverty, I contend that the reigning legal and political theory as embedded in, and as explicated by the constitutional jurisprudence of the Zelman dissenters, and as exemplified by other commentators, fails to address adequately racial disparity and neglects to consider adequately the victims of the current public school hegemony. Hence, the legitimacy of much of the current opposition to school vouchers remains indefensible form an outsider perspective.

Consuming Government, Richard Schragger May 2003

Consuming Government, Richard Schragger

Michigan Law Review

In his ambitious new book, William Fischel, a Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, gives us a new political animal: "The Homevoter." The homevoter is simply a homeowner who votes (p. ix). According to Fischel, she is the key to understanding the political economy of American local government. By implication, she is the key to understanding state and national government as well. Homeowners warrant special attention because "residents who own their own homes have a stake in the outcome of local politics that make them especially attentive to the public policies of local government" (p. ix). That is because local …
