New Jersey V. T.L.O.: The Supreme Court’S Lesson On School Searches, Gerald S. Reamey

Faculty Articles

Considerable disagreement persists as to the fourth amendment rights of students within schools. Particularly, this disagreement regards the extent to which fourth amendment rights possessed by students may frustrate reasonable attempts by educators to maintain the order necessary to preserve an educational environment.

In New Jersey v. T.L.O., the Supreme Court considered an argument advanced by the State of New Jersey that the “pervasive supervision” of school children diminishes the legitimate expectation of privacy a child may have in property “unnecessarily” brought to school. The Court concluded that the necessity of maintaining security and order in the educational environment was …

Effects Of Comparison/Contrast Writing Instruction On The Reading Comprehension Of Tenth-Grade Students, Catherine Anne Baker

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the influence of writing instruction on the reading comprehension of tenth-grade students. Although research has shown that instruction in the recognition of text structure can increase reading comprehension significantly and although it has been assumed that improvement in writing skill would improve reading skill as well, there has been little empirical research concerned with the actual influence of writing instruction. Thus, this study combined both ideas by attempting to determine the effect of writing instruction in text structure on reading comprehension. This study employed eight classes of tenth-grade students taught by four teachers in two high schools. …

Both groups contained both control and training subjects in order to determine changes attributable to training. Differences between the mean gains in performance, after adjusting for inital differences, were analyzed to shed some light on effects of puberty.

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Intensive Clinical Instruction In Spelling Strategies On The Decoding Skills Of Reading Disabled Students, Deirdre Breathnach Jul 1983

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Intensive Clinical Instruction In Spelling Strategies On The Decoding Skills Of Reading Disabled Students, Deirdre Breathnach

Student Work

There appears to be a general agreement among educators that a close relationship exists between the skill of reading and the skill of spelling. Since both reading and spelling serve as major components of communication, parallels exist between factors necessary for success in spelling and reading (Chall, 1967; Wallace and Larsen, 1979). After observing methods employed by students in spelling unfamiliar words, Kottmeyer (1959) concluded that skills used in decoding words in reading are also used in attempts to spell correctly.
