Kindergarten Readiness: A Checklist For Parents And Teachers, Monica Rose Wolfe Jan 2002

Kindergarten Readiness: A Checklist For Parents And Teachers, Monica Rose Wolfe

All Graduate Projects

The standards for kindergarten are being raised each year. Kindergarten is no longer a place for play and socializing. Instead, children are expected to read, write and use mathematical concepts. Using the questionnaire to evaluate a child will allow for communication between parents and teachers as to whether or not the child is ready to take on the new challenges of kindergarten. Providing feedback for parents as to what their child needs to work on to be adequately prepared for kindergarten, will help children to be more successful at the beginning of their school years.

Postsecondary School Education Benefits For Undocumented Immigrants: Promises And Pitfalls, Victor C. Romero Jan 2002

Postsecondary School Education Benefits For Undocumented Immigrants: Promises And Pitfalls, Victor C. Romero

Faculty Scholarship

Should longtime undocumented immigrants have the same opportunity as lawful permanent residents and U.S. citizens to attend state colleges and universities? There are two typical justifications for denying them such opportunities. First, treating undocumented immigrants as in-state residents discriminates against U.S. citizen nonresidents of the state. Second, and more broadly, undocumented immigration should be discouraged as a policy matter, and therefore allowing undocumented immigrant children equal opportunities as legal residents condones and perhaps encourages "illegal" immigration. This essay responds to these two concerns by surveying state and federal solutions to this issue.

Teaching Children To Understand And Remember Information They Can Use Now And Later, Patricia Vespa Jan 2002

Teaching Children To Understand And Remember Information They Can Use Now And Later, Patricia Vespa

Honors Capstones

The purpose of researching various methods is to plan for future instruction. Children listen to learn language, and their listening vocabulary is far greater than their speaking or writing (Farris, 200l p.13). Listening to expository science books with new words encourages new vocabulary. Adults and children use drawings and symbols to communicate a variety of information effectively. I wanted to see how much information students comprehended, and also if they preferred drawing or writing to communicate it. Since they could do either or both in the same time frame, comparisons could be made as to which they preferred. I also …

Integrating Academic And Non-Academic Instruction For Students With Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Robert A. Gable, Jo M. Hendrickson, Stephen W. Tonelson, Richard Van Acker

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

Students with emotional/behavioral disorders exhibit a wide range of academic and behavioral problems. Not surprisingly, there is growing support for integrating instruction to address overlapping students' needs in both areas. In this article, we discuss instructional variables that contribute to a positive classroom climate and that serve as setting events for more focused group-individual instructional programs. We draw on the accumulated research to identify common non-academic challenges that should be incorporated into those programs. We examine issues that relate to the efficacy of instruction and also the cultural and chronological age differences among students and how they relate to planning …

Effects Of Theoretically Distinct Mathematics Interventions On Student Performance And Treatment Acceptability, Christopher Todd Arra

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student mathematics achievement and teacher and student acceptability of academic interventions are important factors in determining the usage and effectiveness of academic interventions. The present study compared the effectiveness and acceptability of theoretically distinct mathematics interventions. The study lasted eight weeks. Eighteen teacher-candidates and 54 fourth grade students were exposed to one of three mathematical interventions. Teacher-candidates and students were asked to rate the acceptability of each intervention. A pretest-posttest analysis of students' mathematics achievement was also conducted. Results showed that both teacher-candidates and students preferred all interventions equally and that mathematics achievement did not significantly increase from pre- to …

Thirteen Texts Every Student Must Read To Have A Well-Rounded High School Theatre Education, Gary Bernard Sessa Jan 2002

Thirteen Texts Every Student Must Read To Have A Well-Rounded High School Theatre Education, Gary Bernard Sessa

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is a discussion of theatre literature and its place in the high school curriculum. Until now, no one has published what specific theatre texts should be taught to students in high school before they graduate. However, with national standards paving the way for the future of education, and the idea that no child will be left behind, every curriculum, not just the core ones, needs to have a list of required reading before a student graduates from high school. This is the only way to insure a well-rounded high school education in theatre. Thirteen diverse texts ranging from …

Parental Perceptions On Maintaining Heritage Languages Of Cld Students, Ruth Lingxin Yan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The rapid growth of the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students in public schools of the United States has been steady in the past decades. Issues concerning CLD students such as their school failures, high dropout rates, the limited English proficiency, family poverty, and their unequal job opportunities, have caused increasing concerns from policy makers, school administrators and educators at all school levels. Various efforts to modify CLD students' social and academic disadvantages have been attempted through educational approaches, especially in the form of heritage language support in bilingual education programs initiated at the local school levels and funded by …

Traditional And Nontraditional Foster Parenting, Angela M. Baranzelli-Yoder

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Foster parents in nontraditional foster care programs receive more extensive, ongoing training and support than foster parents in traditional foster care programs. This study examined whether differences exist in the levels of perceived parenting stress, satisfaction, and efficacy among traditional and nontraditional foster parents. Twenty-four foster parents completed the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and the Parenting Sense of Competence scale (PSOC). Nontraditional foster parents reported higher levels of overall parenting stress and lower levels of foster parent role satisfaction than did traditional foster parents. However, response profiles indicated that nontraditional foster parents had children with more emotional and behavioral problems …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Over the past several years, the Air Force has realized a decline in the experience levels of its workforce. This decline, in conjunction with the influx of replacement personnel, has resulted in training gaps within the ranks of the United States Air Force.

The problem is that the 344th Air Refueling Squadron, as a training oriented organization, has realized gaps in its aircrew experience levels based on the continual personnel turnover of its aircrew workforce. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement and evaluate an inservice training program and a computer-assisted instruction software program for aircrew members of …

Development And Implementation Of An Occupational Safety And Health Administration Education Program For Healthcare Organizations Including A Plan For Evaluation, Anita L. Huse Jan 2002

Development And Implementation Of An Occupational Safety And Health Administration Education Program For Healthcare Organizations Including A Plan For Evaluation, Anita L. Huse

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Today's healthcare organizations must comply with a myriad of laws, regulations, and other requirements governing the organization, delivery, and reimbursement of health care services (Ziel, 1998, p. 1032). The problem is that loss of educational support in the institutions as a result of cut backs often results in non-compliance with federal regulations. Many healthcare institutions are no longer meeting the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) educational requirements (Peck, 1997, p. 20). These healthcare institutions must now outsource to educational consultants to provide programs to address this compliance issue.

The purpose of this project was to develop and implement an …

Step Toward Violence Prevention: "Non-Violent Communication" As Part Of A College Curriculum, Susan M. Blake Jan 2002

Step Toward Violence Prevention: "Non-Violent Communication" As Part Of A College Curriculum, Susan M. Blake

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Structural hierarchies are deeply embedded in institutions such as our educational system. It can be argued that this type of model reinforces an aggressive worldview and fosters an atmosphere of violence. Teaching students to communicate compassionately should promote empathy, discourage verbal aggression and reinforce a more peaceful worldview. To accomplish this, educators need a means of replacing hegemony that assumes hierarchy and aggressive conflict are inevitable. Marshall Rosenberg's (2001) Nonviolent Communication (NVC) may provide educators with an appropriate tool. Rosenberg's model counters the prevailing hegemony making it an ideal candidate to explore in relation to these issues. This paper examines …

Negligent Tort Liability Of Florida Higher Education Institutions, Chrysanthos Andreas Panayiotou Jan 2002

Negligent Tort Liability Of Florida Higher Education Institutions, Chrysanthos Andreas Panayiotou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

During the last thirty years our society has increasingly become more litigious. The reasons behind the increase in legal actions were the enactment of the Tort Act by the Florida legislature, the Civil Rights Act, and Federal Tort Act by the U.S. government. The large monetary awards and the ever-increasing awards in punitive damages have fueled this increase in litigation. Lawyers motivated by the large monetary compensation, typically ranging between one third to one half of the total awards, have been further fueling this litigation explosion. The majority of this litigation is directed to organizations with "deep pockets" which can …

Analysis Of Integrated Science And Language Arts Themes In Software At The Elementary School Level, Lisa Jill Libidinsky Jan 2002

Analysis Of Integrated Science And Language Arts Themes In Software At The Elementary School Level, Lisa Jill Libidinsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

There are many demands on the elementary classroom teacher today, such that teachers often do not have the time and resources to instruct in a meaningful manner that would produce effective, real instruction. Subjects are often disjointed and not significant. When teachers instruct using an integrated approach, students learn more efficiently as they see connections in the subjects. Science and language arts, when combined to produce an integrated approach, show positive associations that can enable students to learn real-life connections. In addition, with the onset of technology and the increased usage of technological programs in the schools, teachers can use …

The Use Of Scaffolding To Improve Student Learning With Interactive Multimedia Programs In Chemistry, Brian T. Grimes Jan 2002

The Use Of Scaffolding To Improve Student Learning With Interactive Multimedia Programs In Chemistry, Brian T. Grimes

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The process of balancing and interpreting chemical equations involves the consideration of an abstract, non-observable phenomenon coupled with multi-level representation. Students find it conceptually demanding to visualise the particulate level of matter and hence experience difficulty in balancing chemical equations with understanding. Interactive multimedia with dynamic computer graphics can provide students with accurate, concrete representations of the particulate nature of matter. Such tools, when coupled with appropriate implementation strategies, have the potential to improve learning about chemical reactions. The study investigated the use of scaffolding techniques to enhance and direct student learning when using an interactive multimedia software (IMM) program, …

Principal Selection And The Stories Superintendents Tell., Linda L. Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In addition to licensure and certification, there are particular qualities and personal characteristics superintendents look for when hiring a principal. With fewer principal applicants and increased projected needs for principals, it was important to explore the superintendent's reasoning when hiring a principal.

A qualitative research method employing elite interviews was used to explore the criteria that superintendents employ in their process of selecting a principal. When talking about the hiring of principals, superintendents invariably began with the selection process. Teachers, community members, parents, former employers, and college professors gave input in formal or informal ways. Superintendents looked for experience both …
