Pediatric Bullying Education In Arkansas Baccalaureate Nursing Programs, Jasmine Jackson

McNair Scholars Research

Over the years, there has been an ever-increasing spotlight on the issue of bullying among adolescents. Nurses are another adult-figure, in addition to parents and teachers, that can help identify and address bullying if educated properly. The purpose of this study was to examine pediatric bullying education in Arkansas baccalaureate nursing programs. Through the use of a mixed-method approach, the newly created survey was to be completed by one faculty member from each of the 12 BSN programs in Arkansas (12 participants; 6 respondents). The paper describes the quantitative and qualitative data analysis from this non-experimental descriptive pilot study. Results …

Personality types, learning style preferences, and self-efficacy domains of ninth-grade students in southwest Missouri were explored in this study. The study was conducted to shed light on needs assessments used to identify learner differences due to the rise of mixed-ability classrooms. Five selected schools participated in the study during the 2019-2020 school year. The Big Five Personality survey was used to identify the dominant personality type of each participant: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, or neuroticism. The Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children (SEQ-C) was used to identify the dominant self-efficacy domain for each participant: academic, social, or emotional. The Thinking and Learning …

Predicting And Perceiving Teacher Effectiveness Of Novice Teachers, Kristen Carlson Jul 2020

Predicting And Perceiving Teacher Effectiveness Of Novice Teachers, Kristen Carlson

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

“What makes a good teacher” is a question that many people interested in education try to answer, whether they are school administrators, education faculty, parents of a K-12 student, or politicians. For several decades, policy makers have been searching for ways to measure teacher effectiveness, primarily through student standardized assessments. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interested educators and education researchers who are working to find alternative ways to measure teacher effectiveness instead of relying solely on the individual students’ standardized assessment scores. This study sought to predict novice teacher effectiveness through performance assessment and to determine how novice …

Bullying By Teachers: Preventative Measures In Hogwarts, Zenobia Allen (1), Shannon Eshman (1), Ashley Mayer (1), Caitlin Schwartz (1)

Student Bibliography

In our case study, the Battle of Hogwarts, we decided to address the problem of bullying by teachers against students in the forms of discrimination, indoctrination, and maltreatment of students and how that might result in negative educational outcomes such as a lack of self-esteem, racist beliefs, discrimination, and stress. Students who were bullied before, during, and after the battle may have long-lasting problems that resulted from such instances of mistreatment. For example, professors such as Snape and the Carrows discriminated against Muggle-born students like Hermione. During the take-over of Hogwarts by the Death Eaters, Defense Against the Dark Arts …

Assessing Community Needs: City Of Toledo And Lucas County, Ohio, Jim Robey, Stephen Biddle, Don Edgerly, Marie Holler, Brian Pittelko, Claudette Robey, Kathleen Bolter, Tom Schorgl

Reports

At the core of issues in Lucas County and, in particular, the City of Toledo is poverty. While this does not necessarily provide an “Aha!” moment, current conditions that contribute to being economically disadvantaged in many areas of the city and county affect not only current residents but will also affect future residents—without meaningful and targeted interventions. It is beyond the scope of the Toledo Community Foundation, or any single institution for that matter, to unilaterally address the range of issues presented in this study. Remedying these issues must be accomplished through the coordination and leveraging of resources, including public, …

Undergraduate Student Experiences Of Publishing Biomechanics Research, Stuart A. Mcerlain-Naylor Jul 2020

Undergraduate Student Experiences Of Publishing Biomechanics Research, Stuart A. Mcerlain-Naylor

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The aim of this study was to investigate student experiences of publishing undergraduate research in biomechanics. Twenty-five individuals with experience of publishing peer-reviewed undergraduate biomechanics research completed an online survey regarding their perceived benefits and their level of involvement in various aspects of the research process. Areas of the greatest and least perceived benefits and student involvement were identified. Correlations suggested numerous beneficial effects of relatively low student involvement, more likely related to the concurrent greater supervisor involvement. Staff should make informed decisions regarding their level of involvement in each aspect of the research process rather than simply focusing on …

Students’ Perception On Teaching Style And Learning Outcome, Chengtu Hsieh, Duane Knudson

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of active learning on students‘ learning outcomes in undergraduate introductory biomechanics and students‘ preference of teaching style. Five undergraduate biomechanics classes from four public universities in the United States were recruited (N = 204). Survey questions were administered over the internet. A total of 160 valid responses were analyzed. The students who rated their class was somewhat interactive and very interactive had significant learning improvement (p < 0.05). There was no significant learning improvement in groups that rated their classes either pure lecture (p = 0.09) or primarily interactive (p = 0.46). This indicated that moderate amounts of active learning enhance learning outcomes above …

Signal-Background Interference For Digluon Resonances At The Large Hadron Collider, Prudhvi N. Bhattiprolu, Stephen P. Martin Jul 2020

Signal-Background Interference For Digluon Resonances At The Large Hadron Collider, Prudhvi N. Bhattiprolu, Stephen P. Martin

NIU Bibliography

We study the interference between the amplitudes for gg→X→gg, where X is a new heavy digluon resonance, and the QCD background gg→gg, at the Large Hadron Collider. The interference produces a large low-mass tail and a deficit of events above the resonance mass, compared to the naive pure-resonance peak. For a variety of different resonance quantum numbers and masses, we evaluate the signal-background interference contribution at leading order, including showering, hadronization, and detector effects. The resulting new physics dijet mass distribution may have a shape that appears, after QCD background fitting and subtraction, to resemble an enhanced peak, a shelf, …

Are We Producing Society-Ready Foresters? A Quantitative Content Analysis Of Graduate-Level Forestry Curriculum, Jacqueline Meyer

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Forestry education in the United States has been hailed for its ability to provide students with the scientific and technical skills needed for a career in forestry as much as it has been criticized for ignoring social dimensions of the discipline. Its inability to adapt curriculum to the increasingly multidisciplinary nature of the forestry profession has led to stagnant or decreasing enrollment and lack of student diversity in recent years. While forestry education and curriculum has been thoroughly analyzed at the undergraduate level, no such analysis exists for graduate curriculum. This study analyzes the course content of 40 graduate-level forestry …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this multiple case study was to understand how the Christian education offered by Country Lakes School System (CLSS; pseudonym) has influenced the worldview of its graduates. CLSS defines a biblical worldview as follows: “The entire process of education is seen as a means used by God to bring the student into fellowship with Himself, to develop a Christian mind in him and to train him in Godly living so that he can fulfill God’s total purpose for his life.” The theoretical framework that guided this study was Sire’s three-dimensional concept of worldview, which served as a basis …

Love Your Neighbor: An Educational Strategy To Cultivate Compassion In Adolescent Males, James Allan Benson Jr Jun 2020

Love Your Neighbor: An Educational Strategy To Cultivate Compassion In Adolescent Males, James Allan Benson Jr

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

When challenged to identify the greatest commandment in the Law, Jesus Christ famously included “love your neighbor” in his response, making love foundational for all followers of Christ. Compassion is a key element that serves to demonstrate biblical love; sadly, today’s culture often minimizes or discourages compassion. In ten years of chaplaincy at the secondary school level, this author has seen too many Christian young men finish their high school journey without a foundation in love through compassion. This thesis project will utilize existing resources for academic and biblical research, as well as interviews of 25 high school males, to …
