We Were There Too: Learning From Black Male Teachers In Mississippi About Successful Teaching Of Black Students, Cleveland Hayes, Brenda Juarez, Veronica Escoffery-Runnels Apr 2014

We Were There Too: Learning From Black Male Teachers In Mississippi About Successful Teaching Of Black Students, Cleveland Hayes, Brenda Juarez, Veronica Escoffery-Runnels

Democracy & Education

Applying culturally relevant and social justice–oriented notions of teaching and learning and a critical race theory (CRT) analysis of teacher preparation in the United States, this study examines the oral life histories of two Black male teachers recognized for their successful teaching of Black students. These histories provide us with a venue for identifying thematic patterns across the two teachers' educational philosophies and pedagogical practices and for analyzing how these teachers' respective personal and professional experiences have influenced their individual and collective approaches to teaching and learning.

Historical Configurations Of Knowledge Among The Iñupiat In Arctic Alaska, Joshua Andrew Van Drei Apr 2014

Historical Configurations Of Knowledge Among The Iñupiat In Arctic Alaska, Joshua Andrew Van Drei

Open Access Theses

This thesis explores how the Iñupiat of the North Slope of Alaska have responded to cultural pressures, specifically those arising from the introduction of missions and schools, and characterized by an increase in permanent outsider settlement, and how they have internalized these pressures into their knowledge system. By examining political, economic, and social factors, this thesis provides a more holistic picture of how and why Iñupiat knowledge has changed through time, beginning with the contact period in the early to mid-1800's until the present day. I find existing models of knowledge transmission cannot account for the ways in which Iñupiat …

Who Emerges In Conversation? An Abolitionist Interruption That Teaches, Cathrine Ryther Apr 2014

Who Emerges In Conversation? An Abolitionist Interruption That Teaches, Cathrine Ryther

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

I draw on Maurice Blanchot's distinction between dialogue and conversation in order to argue for reconsidering conversation as a distinct resource for encountering and attending to otherness rather than sameness. Using Blanchot's concepts as a guide, I compare the figures that emerge in a platonic dialogue with those that emerge in a conversation constructed from the work of two contemporary philosophers: Adriana Cavarero and Jacques Rancière. Allowing these philosophers to do most of the talking, I highlight the emergence in conversation of abolitionist figures with symbolic freedom, in contrast to the emergence in dialogue of substantive and symbolically ordered figures.

Water Runs Downhill: The Realities Of Brain Drain In Eastern Kentucky, Jane Jensen, Charles Mcgrew Mar 2014

Water Runs Downhill: The Realities Of Brain Drain In Eastern Kentucky, Jane Jensen, Charles Mcgrew

ASA Annual Conference

Similar to national calls for increases in post-secondary educational attainment, the Commonwealth of Kentucky's educational policy currently focuses on "doubling the numbers" of citizens with baccalaureate degrees. Where do college degrees take Eastern Kentucky graduates? Using analysis of a longitudinal data base that marries person-centered educational and workforce data, this paper examines the realities of Appalachian Kentucky's brain drain. The study tracks the 2005-2006 graduates of all of public and independent college from Kentucky's Appalachian counties for five years after graduation into employment to identify what types of students remain in the region, what types remain, and how home and …

The Modern School In The Garbage Settlement: Different Social Imaginaries Of The Future Of The Zabbaleen Recycling School For Boys, Marwa Adel Abed El Fattah Feb 2014

The Modern School In The Garbage Settlement: Different Social Imaginaries Of The Future Of The Zabbaleen Recycling School For Boys, Marwa Adel Abed El Fattah

Theses and Dissertations

At 9 am, when 11-year old Ezz starts his day at the Mukattam Recycling School, he is already quite exhausted. Like most Zabballeen or juvenile garbage-collectors, he was up until well into the night the day before, gathering trash with his father in the more affluent neighborhoods of Cairo. In its communication material, the NGO-based school he attends in the morning promises to turn Ezz and others like him into “waste-management entrepreneurs". Fueled by this goal along with illiteracy and basic mathematics classes, Ezz is expected to hand in a monthly quota of used shampoo bottles and miscellaneous beauty product …

Learning To Be Lebanese: Socializations Of Citizenship And Subjecthood In Beiruti Primary Schools, Jade Lansing Feb 2014

Learning To Be Lebanese: Socializations Of Citizenship And Subjecthood In Beiruti Primary Schools, Jade Lansing

Theses and Dissertations

This research project will explore the ways the Lebanese state and individual classroom actors construct and contest citizenship through the curriculum and structure of civics classrooms in contemporary Lebanese primary schools. Using civics classrooms as a lens to understand broader trends in educational environments, this study will analyze the role of education in the narration, diffusion, and aggravation of social and political discord. It argues that schools and classrooms are not passive or neutral mirrors of external dynamics, but rather play an active role in the narration and construction of these realities. This research shows that education is a space …

Using Culturally Ambitious Teaching Practices To Support Urban Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Lanette R. Waddell Jan 2014

Using Culturally Ambitious Teaching Practices To Support Urban Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Lanette R. Waddell

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Culturally relevant pedagogy is an ideology upon which strong urban classrooms can be built. However, culturally relevant pedagogy has not been operationalized in a way that allows consistent implementation in classrooms. This work focuses on the conceptualization of culturally ambitious teaching practices (CATP) in mathematics that exemplify the tenets of culturally relevant pedagogy – academic achievement, cultural competence, and critical consciousness – with those of ambitious mathematics teaching practices. This paper will describe the findings of the initial work of developing and operationalizing CATP in mathematics through a quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Lived Experience Of Transitioning To A New Graduate Nurse Following A Prelicensure Hospital-Based Externship Experience, Debra Shipman Jan 2014

Lived Experience Of Transitioning To A New Graduate Nurse Following A Prelicensure Hospital-Based Externship Experience, Debra Shipman

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Forty years after Kramer's (1974) seminal work, Reality Shock, new graduate nurses continue to have difficulty transitioning to the registered nurse (RN) role. The purpose of this phenomenological study explores the lived experience of new graduate nurses who completed a Veterans Affairs externship program in their senior year of nursing coursework and its perceived impact on their successful transition into the practice role 3-24 months following graduation. Benner's (1984) Novice-to-Expert Model, Karmer's (1974) Reality Shock Theory, and Selder's (1989) Life Transition Theory support a framework for this study. Twelve telephone interviews were conducted using van Manen's (1990) method for researching …

A Five-Step Process For Interactive Parent–Adolescent Communication About Hiv Prevention: Advice From Parents Living With Hiv/Aids, Laura L. Edwards, Janet S. Reis Jan 2014

A Five-Step Process For Interactive Parent–Adolescent Communication About Hiv Prevention: Advice From Parents Living With Hiv/Aids, Laura L. Edwards, Janet S. Reis

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2014

The authors investigated how parents living with HIV/AIDS communicate about HIV prevention with their 10- to 18-year-old children. Semistructured interviews with 76 mothers and fathers were analyzed for (a) their experiences discussing HIV prevention with adolescents and (b) advice for other parents about how to best broach HIV-related topics. Interactive conversations were regarded as particularly effective. A five-step process for interactive communication emerged as a result of these discussions. Parents emphasized that adolescents should have a “voice” and a “choice” in HIV-related talks. Health care professionals can facilitate adolescent sexual health by encouraging parents to actively involve their children in …

Inclusion And Sport: Analysis Of Selected South African Township Schools, T. M. Makoelle Jan 2014

Inclusion And Sport: Analysis Of Selected South African Township Schools, T. M. Makoelle

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

In 1994, South Africa adopted an inclusive system of education in line with the rest of the world. The doors of learning were opened to all learners regardless of their background or disability. However, in spite of the changes, the notion of inclusive school sport as enshrined and articulated in White Paper 6 on special needs’ education published by the South African Department of Basic Education in 2001 has not been fully realized in terms of enabling a diverse inclusive sporting environment for all learners. The research on which this article is based therefore attempted to analyze the nature of …

The Steel Yard, Architecture Department, Sculpture Department, Bruner Foundation

Rudy Bruner Award | 30 Years of Urban Excellence

The Steel Yard redeveloped a historic steel fabrication facility into a campus for arts education, job training, and small-scale manufacturing in Providence, Rhode Island. The 3.5-acre property in the city’s Industrial Valley required extensive environmental remediation to meet regulatory requirements while retaining the industrial urban character of the site. The Steel Yard offers classes, workforce training, and fabrication space for local artists, creating an industrial arts incubator where they can share ideas, materials, and space. It has become a center for creative activity, bridging the gap between the traditional arts community on the affluent east side of Providence with manufacturing …

I Be Goin Places: Sociolinguistic Assimilation In A Baltimore Boarding School, Kade Doyle Needham Jan 2014

I Be Goin Places: Sociolinguistic Assimilation In A Baltimore Boarding School, Kade Doyle Needham

Theses & ETDs

I performed sociolinguistic ethnographic research at The SEED School of Maryland, a statewide public boarding school targeting students whose socioeconomic status hinders their academic potential. During the participant observation, I interviewed staff, teachers and students while collecting written and spontaneous speech samples from the classroom, dorms and cafeteria. The situationally-specific frequencies of AAVE-marked and AAVE-unmarked English measures assimilation into both academic and boarding school culture, offering a nuanced insight into the dimorphic social world of the students. In the end, I relate behavioral and linguistic developments to teaching styles, motivational tactics and the discipline system.

Exploring Anthropology’S Potential As A Catalyst For Reformation In American Pedagogy, Nicole A. Ouellette Jan 2014

Exploring Anthropology’S Potential As A Catalyst For Reformation In American Pedagogy, Nicole A. Ouellette

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I analyze the current state of public education in the United States. I argue that heritage and food are both successful vehicles for learning, and I question why no combination of this sort has been offered to American pedagogy. I explain how I created a series of lesson plans that use this “novel combination” with the intention of teaching fourth grade students in a Florida public school about heritage and preservation. I describe the difficulties that teachers and administration are facing with the adoption of the Common Core State Standards in bringing creativity into the classroom. I …

Manjako Literacy And Issues In Language Of Instruction, Miles Avery Pearson Jan 2014

Manjako Literacy And Issues In Language Of Instruction, Miles Avery Pearson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Students in Caio, Guinea-Bissau cannot read. This is due largely to the mismatch between the language at home and the language of instruction in schools. Students in Caio speak Manjako, but classes are taught in Portuguese, the official language, which students do not understand. This makes it more difficult for students to develop literacy skills and succeed in school. Literature shows that literacy is achieved best when it is taught to students in their mother tongue. This project involved creating and testing Manjako literacy materials and concludes with recommendations for implementing a Manjako literacy program. The materials included flashcards, sample …

Fostering Significant Learning In Sciences, Tolessa Deksissa, Lily R. Liang, Pradeep Behera, Suzan J. Harkness

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The new global economy depends on workforce competencies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics more than ever before. To prepare a strong workforce, attracting and educating underrepresented minority students in science is a challenge within our traditional American educational approach. To meet this challenge, fostering significant learning in science that nurtures 21st Century skills in students is crucial. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of a set of teaching and learning approaches that foster significant learning in sciences. Using a new introductory environmental science course in urban water quality management, the effect of a set …

On Being Transminded: Disabling Achievement, Enabling Exchange, Anne Dalke, Clare Mullaney Jan 2014

On Being Transminded: Disabling Achievement, Enabling Exchange, Anne Dalke, Clare Mullaney

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

We write collaboratively, as a recent graduate and long-time faculty member of a small women’s liberal arts college, about the mental health costs of adhering to a feminist narrative of achievement that insists upon independence and resiliency. As we explore the destabilizing potential of an alternative feminist project, one that invites different temporalities in which dis/ability emerges and may be addressed, we work with disability less as an identity than as a generative methodology, a form of relation and exchange. Mapping our own college as a specific, local site for the disabling tradition of “challenging women,” we move to larger …

The Social Ecology Of Men's Sexual Self-Efficacy In The Mississippi Delta, Vanessa Ann Parks Jan 2014

The Social Ecology Of Men's Sexual Self-Efficacy In The Mississippi Delta, Vanessa Ann Parks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mississippi often has some of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and infections in the country. To combat this, the state uses abstinence-based sexual education in an attempt to discourage young people from having sex. I conducted 27 interviews and one focus group to talk with young men in the Mississippi Delta about their opinions on birth control. Using the social ecological model and self-efficacy framework, this thesis considers the influences on young men that shape their attitudes and behaviors regarding sexual health topics such as birth control. Primary findings include their learning from teachers, parents, …

Are You My Brother's Keeper: Challenging The Systemic Racism That Fosters Low Expectations For Black Males In Public Schools, Shana Denise Nelson Jan 2014

Are You My Brother's Keeper: Challenging The Systemic Racism That Fosters Low Expectations For Black Males In Public Schools, Shana Denise Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation in practice investigates the problem of systemic racism fostering a culture of low expectations for Black males in public schools. This work frames this problem as a matter of social justice and utilizes Critical Race Theory to examine how it robs Black males of their academic potential. This work argues that to address this problem, educators must engage in learning opportunities that help to identify and challenge their race-based assumptions and stereotypes, develop their racial consciousness, cultural competencies, and professional practices, and recognize, interrupt, and address systemic racism. Provided is a working agenda that offers recommendations for how …

Spaces Of Nature: Producing Gilgit-Baltistan As The Eco-Body Of The Nation, Nosheen Ali Jan 2014

Spaces Of Nature: Producing Gilgit-Baltistan As The Eco-Body Of The Nation, Nosheen Ali

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

A while ago, when I was studying in Grade 8 at an English-medium school in Lahore, our class was divided up in four groups for a Geography project on Pakistan. The group of which I was a part had to make a sculptural map of Pakistan, demonstrating the diverse physical and social qualities of its landscape. And so we had set about carving our country with materials like styro-foam, cotton, cloth, and cardboard. In the final map that we made, the region of Gilgit-Baltistan - then the “Northern Areas” – had remained unlabeled and unpeopled, marked only with mountains made …
