Piaget's Theory As The Basis For The Assessment Of Reading Disability Andsuggested Remediation Through An Adapted Science Curriculum, Vivian Helen Mcprouty Jan 1971

Piaget's Theory As The Basis For The Assessment Of Reading Disability Andsuggested Remediation Through An Adapted Science Curriculum, Vivian Helen Mcprouty

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Piaget's theory suggests that the development of intelligence is related to an ability to perform logical operations. For the child between 7 and 11 years of age, seriation and classification are operational forms of behavior originating in earlier actions. Since seriation and classification are important to the syntax and semantics of language) failure to develop fully operational seriation and classification abilities may result in certain deficits in the child's reading ability. If so, the science curriculum may be useful in facilitating the cognitive growth necessary to success in reading. Recommendations for adapting the science program for remediation conclude the study.

All Master's Theses

In the opinion of the investigator, the experiment reported reinforces the hypothesis that greater imagination and creative ability can be fostered in the nine-to-eleven year-old through giving primary consideration to the developmental needs of this age group when presenting a medium. Also that a systematically structured approach to the use of the medium facilitates the child's creative growth and makes progress an unavoidable issue.

The comparative effectiveness of two speech correction approaches was studied in the therapeutic situation (within the program and the setting of the public school). The Van Riper adult-directed auditory stimulation method, used by many speech therapists today, was compared with a self-directed and modified Backus and Beasley approach to sound correction. The problem resolved was: Which method will be most effective in helping first and second grade children acquire adequate articulation skills?

Reading Interests In Relation To Vocational, Extracurricular, And Academic Interests Of Boys In Grades Two Through Six, Diane C. Mccarty

All Master's Theses

Educators are continually seeking ways of aiding children in preparation for their adult lives. There has been much research involving the interest and aspirations of the secondary and college student, often leaving the elementary child behind. The writer felt the need to explore the possibilities of a positive relationship between reading, vocational, academic, and extracurricular interests within the elementary grades. If a correlation could be established, this would aid the teacher in developing the necessary skills in a strong foundation for future use by the student.
