A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman Jan 1973

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Given this large involvement that children have with motion pictures, an educator is moved to inquire into the possible effects that movies might have upon them. It, therefore, seems appropriate that an educational dissertation be undertaken concentrating on Disney Production films, since as indicated by the foregoing, they are so universally viewed by American children.

Statement of the problem:

This study attempted to (1) analyze the five screenplays listed on page 6, (2) show two Disney films based on the screenplays analyzed to groups of children and administer a questionnaire to them. The investigator used the obtained data to determine …

A Model To Elicit Optimum Internal Communications In Unified School Districts, Harry C. Weinberg Jan 1973

A Model To Elicit Optimum Internal Communications In Unified School Districts, Harry C. Weinberg

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Often it is the case unified school districts do not have optimum internal communications. "'Today school personnel, including administrator, often 'confound' their own language by failing to communicate adequately and effectively or by communicating unintentionally in a manner that is detrimental to them and the schools with which they are associated."

Each district has its own unique instruments and channels by which internal communications take place. Knezevich states~, "Communications is one of the least understood areas in administration." This study provides information about successful communication techniques and presents a viable model that should have positive practical implications for unified school …

The Role Of Stimulus And Label Familiarity In Concept Learning, David W. Philips Jan 1972

The Role Of Stimulus And Label Familiarity In Concept Learning, David W. Philips

All Master's Theses

Performance on a concept learning task was investigated by employing familiar and unfamiliar stimulus patterns, three pretraining conditions, and two conceptual rules. Subjects were given either observation or preliminary paired associate practice in labeling shapes with meaningful or nonsense labels and were then required to solve a concept learning task to criterion. It was found that tasks involving familiar stimuli were learned more rapidly than those involving unfamiliar stimuli, and that meaningful verbal pretraining for unfamiliar stimuli resulted in more rapid learning than observation or nonsense label pretraining.

Instructional Style And The Intellectual Performance Of Indian And Eskimo Students, Judith Kleinfield Jan 1972

Instructional Style And The Intellectual Performance Of Indian And Eskimo Students, Judith Kleinfield

ISER Reports

Three 1970-71 studies concerning the styles of instruction that lead to higher intellectual performance among village American Indian and Eskimo high school students are presented in this final report of observations of teachers and students in several Native boarding schools and/or integrated urban high schools in Alaska. The first study, an ethnography, describes the problems of these students and their teachers, and suggests a typology differentiating effective and ineffective teachers. This ethnography suggests that the teachers degree of personal warmth versus professional distance, and degree of active demandingness versus passive understanding, are fundamental dimensions separating successful from unsuccessful teachers. The …

The Impact Of Programed Tutoring On The Reading Achievement Of Lower Achieving Second Grade Children From Low-Income Areas, Keith Eugene Hartwig Jan 1972

The Impact Of Programed Tutoring On The Reading Achievement Of Lower Achieving Second Grade Children From Low-Income Areas, Keith Eugene Hartwig

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Substantial numbers of children from low-income areas do not learn to read sufficiently well to enjoy success in school. There is no published empirical evidence regarding the use of programed tutoring in reading at the second grade level. The impact of programed tutoring on the reading achievement of second grade children must be demonstrated and not inferred from research at the first grade level. This is true, not only in terms of criterion referenced instruments related to the tutoring materials, but in terms of normative referenced instruments designed to sample reading skills. Does programed tutoring increase reading achievement, affect children …

Stimulus Selection Under Conditions Of Free Choice By Preschool Children At Baseline And After Adaptation, Andrea Lyn Shields Jan 1971

Stimulus Selection Under Conditions Of Free Choice By Preschool Children At Baseline And After Adaptation, Andrea Lyn Shields

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The experiments reported in the present paper may be characterized as belonging to the general area of motivation research referred to as stimulus selection behavior. Stimulus selection behavior includes curiosity, exploratory, and manipulatory activities. Generally, the research in the area attempts to determine the relation between changes in the stimulus and changes in the measures of approach behavior in the subject (s). In this research, approach behavior is apparently unrelated to organic need conditions. The experiments presented in this paper were designed to determine a preschool child's stimulus preference as he entered the experimental setting, and whether that preference could …
