Creative Learning: A Curriculum For Preprimary Children: Unit 6: The Five Senses, Marjorie L. Oelerich, Jean Peterson, Meredith S. Ring
Creative Learning: A Curriculum For Preprimary Children: Unit 6: The Five Senses, Marjorie L. Oelerich, Jean Peterson, Meredith S. Ring
Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications
THE FIVE SENSES is one resource unit. It is hoped to serve as a resource to others as they guide the learning of young children. It is not a cut-and-dried,how-to-do-it book. But it is a collection of numerous learning experiences within the context of a unit setting. The various disciplines are not, and cannot, be separated; learning overlaps. With a central theme, young children will have many opportunities to examine, investigate, explore, experience and discover concepts of meaning. As the children approach the same concept from a number of experiences, they will have opportunities to formulate ideas, to test these …

Adult Education Curriculum
Like the other Students in the Thinking and Learning Environment, Harry Prime has enrolled in an evening course in search of his High School Equivalency Certificate. Before long, he and his friends discover that some ways of thinking are better than others. They promptly turn their newfound powers of critical reasoning upon such matters as science, art, religion, education and mind. As they proceed with their discussions, they disclose what it is to form a community of inquiry.
Harry Prime (like Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery, another philosophical novel by Matthew Lipman) is a fictional introduction to philosophy and logic. Some …
Cognitive Strategy Training Effects On Reading Comprehension In Learning-Disabled Readers., Erin Cuccia Agostini
Cognitive Strategy Training Effects On Reading Comprehension In Learning-Disabled Readers., Erin Cuccia Agostini
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was conducted to investigate the hypothesis that learning disabled children with reading deficits demonstrate a "production deficiency" by failing to spontaneously employ appropriate cognitive strategies in reading situations. Moreover, it was anticipated that providing them with explicit instruction regarding these strategies would improve their comprehension. Thirty learning disabled seventh- and eighth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of three training conditions: (a) summarization, (b) self-questioning, and (c) control. The effectiveness of the training strategies was assessed by having students write an 80-word summary and answer a 10-item multiple choice comprehension test on each of two passages during three …

(2) To determine the relationship between flock management practices followed by members of LSPA and their purpose for producing, size of operation, age and education. (3) To determine the educational needs in sheep production. The data were obtained by a mail questionnaire sent to 275 of the 304 members of LSPA. A total of 189 members engaged in sheep production returned the surveys. Chi-square, analysis of variance and correlation analysis was used to determine statistically significant relationships (.05 …
The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr
The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation studies the conditions which brought the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) into existence in 1914 and which have sustained it for over 70 years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 40 percent of Russia's population consists of farmers and that approximately 70 percent of China's population are farmers. The significance of these figures in relation to productivity is apparent when contrasted with the United States farm population of 2 percent. The current high level of production in American agriculture, sustained by such a small percentage of the population, is not an accident, as Professor Roy V. Scott, …
An Investigation Of The Inference And Mapping Components Of The Componential Theory Of Analogical Reasoning., Catherine Sheard
An Investigation Of The Inference And Mapping Components Of The Componential Theory Of Analogical Reasoning., Catherine Sheard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sternberg's componential theory of analogical reasoning (1977) provides a series of steps that may be followed in order to solve analogies. According to Sternberg, when given a simple analogy (in the form A:B::C: (D$\sb1$, D$\sb2$, D$\sb3$)) the reasoner: (a) encodes the terms of the analogy, (b) infers the relation between A and B, (c) maps the relation between A and C, (d) applies a relation analogous to the inferred one from C to each answer option, choosing the closer option, and (e) responds. The purpose of this research was to further investigate the inference and mapping processes of the componential …
The Relationship Between Supervisory Methods And Teacher Self-Concept As A Teacher And As A Person., Annis Dowden Tarver
The Relationship Between Supervisory Methods And Teacher Self-Concept As A Teacher And As A Person., Annis Dowden Tarver
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was designed to test the relationship between methods of supervision used during the supervisory conference and teacher self-concept as a teacher and as a person. The method of supervision, the independent variable in the research design, was either clinical supervision using the Hunter (1980) method or traditional supervision. The clinical method of supervision used specific, diagnostic, and prescriptive feedback given by the supervisor during a series of supervisory conferences that followed the five types of supervisory conferences proposed by Hunter. The traditional method of supervision used general and non-specific feedback given by the supervisor during a series of …
Teaching Aboriginal Children: Milingimbi And Beyond, Michael Christie (Ed.)
Teaching Aboriginal Children: Milingimbi And Beyond, Michael Christie (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
The original intention of the contributors was to write a book about their experiences as teachers at Milingimbi in Arnhem Land. Initially, articles were obtained from only those people who had actually taught at Milingimbi. However, theory and practice have changed a great deal since the original articles were put together in 1978. Some of those articles became dated; others were repetitious; some were simply not good enough to be printed.
The collection of articles now presented were all written by people who have taught in Arnhem Land - hence the use of the Arnhem Land words yolngu (Aboriginal) and …

A Content Analysis Of The Developmental Bibliotherapeutic Implications Of The Books Nominated For The California Young Reader Medal (1975--1986), Armin Richard Schulz
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the developmental bibliotherapeutic implications of the California Young Reader Medal nominated books from 1975-1986 in six different selected categories of thematic content. Emotional Health, Self-Awareness, and Identity Needs; Cultural Differences; Family Relationships and Dynamics; Peer Relationships and Dynamics; Physical Limitations and Handicaps; and Economic Situations and Factors. Findings. Primary Category books, largely modern fanciful fiction, demonstrated limited developmental bibliotherapeutic potential. However, story illustrations affected the over-all impact of the story. Intermediate Category books had greater levels of potential, especially stories dealing with family, peers, and emotional health. The greatest levels of …

In his book Megatrends: Ten New Directions Transforming Our Lives, John Naisbitt (1982) described a world of the 80s that was embracing a new technology in which 75 percent of the jobs were computer dependent. This new technology has "invaded" every aspect of life from grocery store checkout systems, bank transactions, ordering in catalog centers, confirmations of charge card purchases, toll booth tickets, movie animation, office automation, and medicine to the computer system tied into a database providing access to almost any imaginable piece of information in mere seconds.

A Market Analysis For Adult Outdoor Education In Five Western States, Karla Joy Vanderzanden
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Organizations that offer Outdoor Education programs for adults are concerned with how to best attract people to their programs. Effective program design begins with a clear understanding of the people to be served. A marketing orientation--meeting the needs of participants--has begun to pervade non-profit management; specific information on the adult market for Outdoor Education remains limited. The purpose of this study was to identify and characterize segments based upon the benefits people seek from such an experience. Secondly, this analysis describes current programs 1n a five state region and identifies discrepancies between available and needed services.

Humans And Other Animals: A Biological And Ethical Perspective, Ashley Montagu
Humans And Other Animals: A Biological And Ethical Perspective, Ashley Montagu
Attitudes Towards Animals Collection
What I have been hoping to do in this talk is to provide the scientific basis for the biological kinship of humans with other animals in particular and the whole of nature in general, and to show that the ethical perspective to which such a demonstration leads is inherent in the very nature of nature, that cooperation, love, not conflict and aggression, as we have long been led to believe, is the dominant principle by which living creatures are designed to live with each other. It was not Darwin, but the muscular Darwinists, like Herbert Spencer, who wasn't a biologist …
Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness: Creatine Kinase As A Marker For Tissue Damage (Pgf(2a) Metabolite)., John Douglas Boatwright
Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness: Creatine Kinase As A Marker For Tissue Damage (Pgf(2a) Metabolite)., John Douglas Boatwright
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Twenty college age males participated in a weight-lifting experiment, 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 70% 1RM for the squat, to examine the time courses between creatine phosphokinase (CPK), prostaglandin F(,2) alpha metabolite (PGF(,2a) met) and ratings of perceived soreness (RPS). Both groups, aspirin (n = 10) and placebo (n = 10), received medication (3g/day) for four consecutive days, starting 1 day prior to workout. Ratings of soreness and blood samples were taken pre- and immediately post-exercise, and at 24 h intervals for 3 days after exercise. There was no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the groups for CPK and RPS across time, but the prostaglandins were significantly different (p < 0.01) at all time intervals between groups. Changes seen across time were quadratic for all variables. The 24 h prostaglandin level was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the pre-, post-exercise and 72 h levels, but not significantly different from the 48 h level. Ratings of soreness were not significantly different (p < 0.05) at the 24 and 48 h intervals, but both were significantly higher than at all other time intervals. The mean CPK levels at 24 and 48 h were not significantly different (p < 0.05), but the 24 h CPK level was significantly higher (p < 0.05) from the other time intervals. There was a significant correlation (p < 0.01) between the time courses of CPK and RPS. It was concluded that CPK can be used as a marker for tissue damage and that prostaglandins did not influence the subjects' perception of muscle soreness or the release or uptake of CPK.

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …
