Parenting Style And Family Environment Of Caucasian-American Versus Malaysian Families, James Eric Davison Jan 1989

Parenting Style And Family Environment Of Caucasian-American Versus Malaysian Families, James Eric Davison

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to determine whether functional Malaysian families differed from functional Caucasian-American families in family environment, parenting style, and marital adjustment, in terms of behavior-rating measures of family problem-solving and self-report measures of family environment and marital adjustment. Variables for the sample of 38 families were assessed using the Family Problem-Solving Behavior Coding System, the Problem-Solving Efficiency Scale, the Beavers-Timberlawn Family Evaluation Scale, the Family Environment Scale, and the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test. Significance was determined by comparing ratings between Malaysian and American families. Malaysian and Caucasian-American families were not significantly different regarding parenting style and family environment variables. …

Readability Of Mass Mailing Written Material Produced At The County Level Of The Alabama Cooperative Extension Service., Earl Crawford Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objectives of this study were to assess the readability of the mass mailing written material produced at the county level of the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service, and to determine the variance in readability explained by selected variables. A mail questionnaire to 100 randomly selected county agents was used, with a 98% response rate. Readability of agents' mass mailing written material was assessed using the Fry Readability Graph. Descriptive statistics and correlation coefficients were calculated. Stepwise multiple regression at the.05 level was used to develop a model which explained readability of material. Findings indicated that respondents spent about six hours …

The Lactate Threshold And Carbon Dioxide Flow To The Lung As Predictors Of Ventilation During Exercise., Becky Anne Baker Jan 1989

The Lactate Threshold And Carbon Dioxide Flow To The Lung As Predictors Of Ventilation During Exercise., Becky Anne Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three studies were performed to determine the relationship between blood lactate, CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung, and ventilation during exercise. First, the method of determining the lactate threshold by use of log-log and semilog transformations developed by Beaver and his colleagues was modified to provide an objective method of determining the threshold which resulted in a significantly better fit (p $<$.05) of the log-log model to the data. Second, to test the theory that the increase in CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung due to bicarbonate buffering of H+ from lactic acid causes the rise in ventilation out of proportion to VO$\sb2$ at the ventilatory threshold, the lactate thresholds of these subjects were used to predict their ventilatory thresholds. The lactate threshold determined by the modified log-log model/method was a poor predictor with an insignificant relationship between the lactate and ventilatory thresholds (p $>$.05). In the third study, six subjects were tested during 4 sessions to determine the relationship between ventilation and CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung during exercise and also during rest and exercise while CO$\sb2$ was being inhaled. This relationship …

Factors Associated With The Production Of Export Quality Fruit By Small Banana Farmers Of The Rio Grande Valley, Portland, Jamaica., Terrence W. Thomas Jan 1989

Factors Associated With The Production Of Export Quality Fruit By Small Banana Farmers Of The Rio Grande Valley, Portland, Jamaica., Terrence W. Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study was aimed at determining the relationship between two production variables--technology use, and production of export quality fruit--of small banana farmers in the Rio Grande Valley, Jamaica and selected socioeconomic, personal characteristic and opinion variables, assessing the amount of variance in production explained by the latter, and identifying variables that moderate or mediate the relationship between production variables. The target population was 120 farmers selling bananas to a public boxing plant. A random sample of non-banana farmers was used as a cross-validation check to make inferences to all farmers. Farmers were personally interviewed using a pretested schedule. Stepwise multiple …

An Instructional Sequence In Music Education Using Vocal And Instrumental Music Of Five World Cultures., Sophronia Lois Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The music of five non-Western cultures was incorporated in an instructional sequence for elementary grades (K)1-6. Traditional music of the Australian Aborigines and the Akan and Ewe tribes of Ghana, classical music of India, the music of the Indonesian gamelan, and Gagaku music of Japan were examined for the presence of musical concepts, the way each culture handles the concepts that are present, and the interrelationships that exist among the concepts. The music is described in terms of the musical concepts of dynamics, timbre, texture, rhythm, melody, harmony, and form. All of the concepts and their related percepts are organized …

Orchestral Snare Drum Performance: An Historical Study., Guy Gregoire Gauthreaux Ii Jan 1989

Orchestral Snare Drum Performance: An Historical Study., Guy Gregoire Gauthreaux Ii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Today, we differentiate snare drum performance into one of two broad styles, usually referred to as orchestral and rudimental. Since all early examples of orchestral snare drum literature are rudimental or military in nature, the evolution of present-day orchestral snare drum performance from its military origin deserves careful study. The objectives of this monograph were to investigate: the function of the snare drum prior to its use in the orchestra, the origins of the use of the snare drum in the orchestra, and the developments of orchestral snare drum performance practice. This study concluded that the movement of the snare …

Re-Inventing The Public Sphere: Critical Theory, Social Responsibility, Schools, And The Press., John Pace Konopak Jan 1989

Re-Inventing The Public Sphere: Critical Theory, Social Responsibility, Schools, And The Press., John Pace Konopak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the contemporary discourses of journalism and pedagogy from the standpoint of critical theory to assess the impact of technocratic rationality and instrumental logic on the practices of communication and education. It is premised on the observation that, spurred by the imperatives of trans-national capital accumulation, privatization inimical to democratic interests has begun to colonize public education. The study represents an effort to reactivate a concept and rhetoric of "social responsibility" that would animate a project of reclaiming cultural space to be occupied by a "public sphere," in a struggle analagous to that waged against feudalism and monarchical …

Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part Ii, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger Oct 1988

Implementing Educational Software And Evaluating Its Academic Effectiveness: Part Ii, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

In Part I, published last month, we presented a successful classroom implementation plan for integrating educational software into elementary school classrooms. Implementing educational software successfully into classrooms is an essential prerequisite to achieving the second goal of the present research-evaluating how much students learned by using specific software programs. In Part II, we will measure how effective eight software programs were at teaching fifth grade students new fraction concepts and spelling words. In addition, we will examine the validity of teacher and student software ratings based on the effectiveness of each program.

Authors Of Pictures, Draughtsmen Of Words, Ruth Shagoury Hubbard

Doctoral Dissertations

Human thought is unique. We have the ability to create and share meaning through the use of various kinds of symbol systems. This study explored the shared dynamics of visual and verbal symbolic thought processes and their consequences for the acquisition of literacy. In particular, the study focused on the writing, reading, and drawing processes of the children in a process-based first-grade classroom.

Research methods included participant/observations, open-ended interviews, audio-taped classroom discussions and interviews, and samples of the writing and drawing of the children in the entire class, with a special focus on five of the students. A detailed analysis …

Academic Discourse: An Ethnography Of The Public And Private Literacies Of University Students, Elizabeth Chiseri-Strater

Doctoral Dissertations

This study is about the various meanings that being literate holds for two students in an academic setting. The study begins in a description of a prose writing classroom where informants are located and then goes on to follow two students from prose writing into other settings across the curriculum to consider how talk, reading, and writing are used in these classrooms. The data was collected using a number of field methods such as participant observation and intensive interviews as well as non-interactive methods such as textual and transcript analysis. Two extensive case studies form the center of the study. …

Art Educators’ Responsibility To Cultural Diversity: Or “Where Are You Goin Wid Alla My Stuff?”, Kristen G. Congdon Jan 1988

Art Educators’ Responsibility To Cultural Diversity: Or “Where Are You Goin Wid Alla My Stuff?”, Kristen G. Congdon

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The responsibility of art educators to recognize and study the art and context of as many populations as possible is examined in this article. Examples of how artistic expressions have been borrowed, used in different contexts and otherwise removed from their original cultural context are given, and examples of ways that art teachers can help to recognize origins and the artistic functions of many cultures are suggested. By placing art in its context and studying it as it changes, students may begin to understand the artistic source, appreciate the importance of the creative context, and begin to see multi-cultural dimensions …

Effects Of Sex And Social Influence On Perception Of Physical Effort During Light To Heavy Work By Elite Athletes., Michael Francis Sylva Jan 1988

Effects Of Sex And Social Influence On Perception Of Physical Effort During Light To Heavy Work By Elite Athletes., Michael Francis Sylva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to investigate the effect of sex and social influence on perception of physical effort during light or heavy work by male and female athletes. Subjects performed three submaximal trials of 27 minutes each on a cycle ergometer at 25, 50 and 70% of maximum oxygen consumption in the presence of a male coactor, a female coactor, and just riding alone. The results indicated that subjects' ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were similar when performing at all three coactor/alone conditions. No significant sex difference in RPE was found. Thus, highly trained male and female atheletes did not …

The Need For Audio-Visual Curriculum, Barbara Arnold Jan 1988

The Need For Audio-Visual Curriculum, Barbara Arnold

Theses

The purpose of this project was to study the effectiveness of audio-visual aids in the cla9sroom. To justify the use of audio-visual aids in the classrooms, an attempt was made to test the hypothesis that for audio-visual aids to be used effectively to teach details and comprehension of story and lesson content, they must be properly introduced with a study guide and followed by related activities and e valuation . Three heterogeneously grouped classes were regrouped for this project. Three units of literature, science and social studies were planned with three lessons for each unit. This allowed the teachers to …

Education, Liberation, And Freedom From The Known : The Philosophy Of J. Krishnamurti, Donna L. Lundstrom Jan 1988

Education, Liberation, And Freedom From The Known : The Philosophy Of J. Krishnamurti, Donna L. Lundstrom

Honors Capstones

In studying the philosophy of J. Krishnamurti, I will be focusing on his ideas on education. Krishnamurti insists on educating without fear, without authority, and without competition. He suggests that, rather than a hierarchical relationship, the educator and the educated should meet on the same level, questioning and counter-questioning. He promotes the idea that the mind must become incredibly sensitive, alert, and aware in order for real learning to take place. A mind in this state is alive and innocent, ready for learning. Keen observation and self-knowledge should be the main goals in education, so that the students can form …

A Structured Writing Program To Improve Fluency And Attitudes Of Seventh Grade Students In A Basic English Program, Janifer Gorney

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The intent of this practicum was to increase writing fluency and improve writing attitudes exhibited by a group of seventh grade students with Yaqui and Hispanic backgrounds. During a period of 16 weeks, a writing unit was implemented consisting of twenty structured activities to guide students in presenting their ideas and to increase their chances for success. As students' fluency increased, the patterns and models given became less structured so that students used more of their own ideas.

Evaluation was conducted through the use of Quality Writing Guidelines as well as student and parent follow-up surveys. Results indicated increased levels …
