The Soul Of Man Under Capitalism, Joe L. Cantu
The Soul Of Man Under Capitalism, Joe L. Cantu
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This paper examines the consciousness of three literary characters, divided by space and time, from mid nineteenth century Russia, mid twentieth century Italy, to late twentieth century American society. This paper exposes literature’s rendition of modern man’s varying consciousness as shaped by the changing social conditions around him. This paper recognizes these varying social conditions as different stages in capitalism’s development. Capitalism has a history; the literature this paper examines discloses its negative impact on the consciousness of its characters. In analyzing Notes from the Underground, Contempt, and American Psycho, three novels separated by geography and spanning a timeframe of …
Adaptation Of Regional Representative Soil Project And Soil Judging For Cameroon, Celestine Che
Adaptation Of Regional Representative Soil Project And Soil Judging For Cameroon, Celestine Che
All Dissertations
Representative regional soils have agricultural, cultural, economic, environmental, and historical importance to Cameroon. Twenty seven regional representative soils have been identified in Cameroon. A set of laboratory exercises, assignments and exam questions have been developed utilizing the Regional Representative Soil Project (RRSP) that gives students an opportunity to practice interpretation of soil series descriptions, taxonomic classes, soil forming factors, and soil physical and chemical properties. The RRSP can be further enhanced and complemented with Soil Judging. Conventional soil judging as practiced in the United States has been adapted for Cameroon by a graduate student from that country using an undergraduate-level …
State Tuition Tax Credits: A School Choice Policy Recommendation, Andrew M. Butler
State Tuition Tax Credits: A School Choice Policy Recommendation, Andrew M. Butler
Senior Honors Theses
Public schools are afflicted by a litany of ailments ranging from the methodological to the practical. Public schools operate on a conflicted educational philosophy, are rife with inefficiencies, and result in educational monopolies. A state tuition tax credit system is the most advantageous policy option available in regards to education reform and school choice initiatives. This paper will examine some of the 11 state tuition tax credit programs currently in operation as well as other school choice options, and identify problems inherent in the public school system. State tuition tax credits are a superior educational policy option as compared with …

Landscapes To Learnscapes: Exploring Schoolyard-Based Education, Emily I. Palena, Caroline T. Spurgin
Pitzer Senior Theses
This thesis explores schoolyard-based education as a viable and necessary method for rectifying the shortcomings within the American public school system and the Nature-deficit Disorder epidemic. We argue that schoolyard-based education should be fully integrated into the school system, not in the sole form of popularized school gardens, but as a standard teaching method. We show this using extensive research and a case study of three elementary schools in Claremont, California.

A Sweetgrass Method of Bullying Prevention for Native American Youth
Abstract
The Sweetgrass Method of Bullying Prevention for Native Youth serves as an instrument and strategy to communicate, collaborate and continue healthy journeys for native people. Native
Americans have held sweetgrass as sacred for a very long time. Sweetgrass is used to cleanse the heart so that our hearts feel the truth, grow in harmony and balance, and feel compassion, gentleness and thoughtfulness for others. The Sweetgrass Method forms a culturally responsive method of delivery for bullying prevention by looking at the three braiding strands: introspective (looking within self), collaboration …

The Constitutional Issues Surrounding The Science-Religion Conflict In Public Schools: The Anti-Evolution Controversy, Michael M. Greenburg
The Constitutional Issues Surrounding The Science-Religion Conflict In Public Schools: The Anti-Evolution Controversy, Michael M. Greenburg
Pepperdine Law Review
Since the infamous Scopes trial the matter of the constitutional validity of the "anti-evolution" laws has plagued both legal scholars and school administrators. The courts have generally invalidated legislation which bans outright the teaching of evolution in public schools, but with the advent of the "balanced treatment" acts, a revival of this litigation has begun. The author examines the constitutional analysis utilized by the courts in dealing with the "anti-evolution" and "balanced treatment" acts and provides an historical perspective of the first amendment to question the Court's response to the issue.

Database Application For A Youth Market Livestock Production Education Program, Marc R. Horney
Journal of Extension
This article offers an example of a database designed to support teaching animal production and husbandry skills in county youth livestock programs. The system was used to manage production goals, animal growth and carcass data, photos and other imagery, and participant records. These were used to produce a variety of customized reports to help guide leaders and members through the project animal selection and management process and evaluate progress over time. The chief advantage of the system is in its utility in reducing the effort required to perform the many communication and information-sharing tasks that were necessary for success.

From Toxic Tours To Growing The Grassroots: Tensions In Critical Pedagogy And Community Development, Celina Su, Isabelle Jagninski
From Toxic Tours To Growing The Grassroots: Tensions In Critical Pedagogy And Community Development, Celina Su, Isabelle Jagninski
Publications and Research
Structural inequalities in American public education are inextricably tied to deep-seated patterns of racial and economic segregation. Children in poor neighborhoods are less likely to have the household resources, neighborhood institutions, or school amenities necessary for a good, challenging education. In response, a growing number of organizations have launched initiatives to simultaneously revitalize neighborhoods and improve public education, emphasizing youth participation as an essential component in their efforts. We draw upon ethnographic data from two such organizations to examine their practice of place-based critical pedagogy in community development. We focus on how they engage marginalized, “hard-to-reach” youth via (1) experiential …

They Want To Be Global Citizens: Now What? Implications Of The Ngo Career Arc For Students And Faculty Mentors, Andrew M. Robinson
Human Rights and Human Diversity Faculty Publications
Once faculty have inspired their students to want to become Global Citizens, many of these students will approach them for advice about careers that will enable them to live out their commitment to global justice. This article seeks to inform such discussions by providing students and their faculty mentors with information to help consider whether the NGO sector is a good fit for the student, how to prepare for it, and how to advance within it. It does so by providing a snapshot of the nonprofit/NGO career arc based upon analysis of 220 responses to a survey conducted in 2010 …
"Either Way, Your Husband Won't Look At You Like An Ugly Wilted Flower" Meanings Of Purity Among Evangelical And Catholic Abstinence Education Participants, Hannah Brown
Theses & ETDs
This study investigates meanings of the word purity in the context of participants' interpretations of the messaging present in Catholic and Evangelical abstinence education programs. Preexisting literature focuses on gendered notions of sexual morality in the context of patriarchy and the effectiveness of abstinence education in terms of when and how participants have sex. This study investigates how gendered notions of sexual morality are nuanced by the role of religion and individual interpretation, focusing on meaning-making rather than sexual activity. Through qualitative analysis of 14 interviews with young adults who formerly were participants in Christian abstinence education, this study identifies …

A Puppet Or A Man? The Effects Of Character Type On 4- And 5-Year-Olds' Learning From Video Programs, Elena Korallis
Theses & ETDs
The current study explored whether different character types in a video program designed to educate 4- and 5-year-olds affects learning. Each child was randomly assigned to watch a video with human, puppet, or a combination of the character types. Before watching the video, each child was tested for theory of mind development and ability to replicate and continue ABAB and ABCABC patterns using blocks. During the video, the two characters, Alex and Jessie, built block towers using the same patterns. When Jessie accidentally knocked the tower down, Jessie asked the child what to do to make Alex feel better. The …

John Boswell: Posting Historical Landmarks At The Leading Edge Of The Culture Wars, Jeffery Cisneros
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
One of the most enduring and controversial figures in the field of history is John E. Boswell. His work on homosexuality and the history of the Christian Church was published at a key time during the Stonewall Riots in the late 1960s and the removal of homosexuality from the list of diagnostic mental disorders in the mid 1970s. This social upheaval created a dynamic that not only influenced Boswell personally but contributed to the vehement reaction to his book Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality: Gay People in Western Europe from the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Fourteenth Century. …
Reaping The "Colored Harvest": The Catholic Mission In The American South, Megan Stout Sibbel
Reaping The "Colored Harvest": The Catholic Mission In The American South, Megan Stout Sibbel
Dissertations
A central paradox marks the story of the Roman Catholic mission in the American South. On one hand, the Church committed itself to providing access to quality education in underserved southern black communities. The establishment of southern Catholic schools for African American children supported the nation's traditional emphasis on education as a prerequisite for economic, social, and political advancement. Insofar as Catholic schools and sisters in the Jim Crow South offered opportunity in communities that otherwise lacked access to education, they demonstrated some of the best qualities traditionally associated with the United States of America.
On the other hand, Catholic …

Sustainable Systems Thinking In Communication Design Education, Yvette M. Perullo
Sustainable Systems Thinking In Communication Design Education, Yvette M. Perullo
Open Access Theses
Design ingenuity and sustainability can, and should, work together. Designers have an ethical responsibility to provide ideas that do no harm, and better yet, create positive solutions that nourish the environment, social and cultural structures, and the economy. This approach, referred to as sustainable systems thinking--in contrast to more common design approaches--looks at a problem as an integrated component of an entire network. Sustainable systems thinking helps designers, clients, and consumers to consider who or what is connected to the design outcome, where the project will have positive and negative ecological, financial, cultural or social impacts, and make the entire …
Craft As Activism, Elizabeth Garber
Craft As Activism, Elizabeth Garber
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Craft activists work outside the mainstream of consumer society, in grass-roots efforts, to create social change that positions individuals and groups of people as reflective contributors who occupy a participatory democracy. These activities connect to and draw from feminist and other civil rights movements, sustainability, and do-it-yourself [DIY] activities. They are forms of affective labor. The crafted products are considered in terms of whether they contribute (or do not) to the surplus economy, in terms of class taste, and vis-à-vis their ability to connect people and contribute to social change. Education of craft activists and audiences takes informal forms, such …
