An Evaluation Of Teaching Methods Based On Cognitive Achievement, Ryan Patrick Siebenmorgen
An Evaluation Of Teaching Methods Based On Cognitive Achievement, Ryan Patrick Siebenmorgen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any significant differences (p < .05) in cognitive achievement between different instructional techniques on students enrolled in high school agricultural science classes in Northwest Arkansas. Lesson content covered the
production, uses, and performance of biodiesel fuels in compression engines. Treatments were different instructional techniques including lecture, demonstration, and a combination of lecture and demonstration. Cognitive achievement was measured on low level cognition and high level cognition. In addition, this study sought to find any correlation between student perceptions of lecture versus demonstration and tinkering self-efficacy on student achievement.
A true experimental pretest-posttest design (#2) was used to conduct this research (Campbell & Stanley, 1996). The population consisted of all students enrolled in high school …
Imagining A Common Ground: Place, Community, And The Possibility For Place-Based Education Through Flannery O'Connor's 'Greenleaf', Christine Mahoney
Imagining A Common Ground: Place, Community, And The Possibility For Place-Based Education Through Flannery O'Connor's 'Greenleaf', Christine Mahoney
All Theses
Through literature, news outlets, media, parents, teachers, and peers, youth are currently being made aware that there are severe problems in the environmental and social realms. However, the imagined but representative stories found in literature also offer opportunities for students to learn how to combat these crises, and instilling the value of place in students through pedagogy will help them become proactive adults. The particular dynamic between community and place is one we see at work in “Greenleaf” by Flannery O'Connor, an author who has been left out of ecopedagogical conversations but can be useful in finding imaginative connections between …
Grammar Enhanced Biliteracy: Naskapi Language Structures For Facilitating Reading In Naskapi, William Joseph Jancewicz
Grammar Enhanced Biliteracy: Naskapi Language Structures For Facilitating Reading In Naskapi, William Joseph Jancewicz
Theses and Dissertations
The Naskapi language is the language of instruction in the early primary grades of the school in the Naskapi community. Only recently have Naskapi-speaking teachers received formal instruction in pedagogy, with a cohort of Naskapi teachers following courses for their Bachelor of Education degree towards careers teaching in the Naskapi language in their local school. These adults are highly motivated to become literate in their mother tongue in order to teach or prepare curriculum materials in the Naskapi language. This thesis explores how basic grammatical structures can be mastered, and provides insight into the form that pedagogical grammatical instruction should …

West Virginia High School Guidance Counselors Perceptions And Interactions With Agricultural Education Programs In Their Schools, Nicole Riggle Shipman
West Virginia High School Guidance Counselors Perceptions And Interactions With Agricultural Education Programs In Their Schools, Nicole Riggle Shipman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Guidance or vocational counselors have a strong influence over student placement in agricultural education programs. A descriptive research design using a mailed questionnaire was used for this study to determine methods used by West Virginia high school guidance counselors to determine student placement in agricultural education classes. The study found that a majority of the guidance counselors do not have an agricultural background. A majority of the counselors report enrolling students in agricultural programs regardless of their college or career goals. Counselors view agricultural teachers as concerned for students' achievement and personal growth and believe agricultural educators should be involved …

A Two-Minute Paper And Pencil Test Of Symbolic And Nonsymbolic Numerical Magnitude Processing Explains Variability In Primary School Children’S Arithmetic Competence, Nadia Nosworthy, Stephanie Bugden, Lisa Archibald, Barrie Evans, Daniel Ansari
Faculty Publications
Recently, there has been a growing emphasis on basic number processing competencies (such as the ability to judge which of two numbers is larger) and their role in predicting individual differences in school-relevant math achievement. Children’s ability to compare both symbolic (e.g. Arabic numerals) and nonsymbolic (e.g. dot arrays) magnitudes has been found to correlate with their math achievement. The available evidence, however, has focused on computerized paradigms, which may not always be suitable for universal, quick application in the classroom. Furthermore, it is currently unclear whether both symbolic and nonsymbolic magnitude comparison are related to children’s performance on tests …

"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday
"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday
Anthropology ETDs
This paper analyzes the secrets revealed by Korean high school girls. Despite their struggles being known to the Korean public-at-large, the majority of these secrets express the students dismay at not meeting the high standards expected of teenage girls in successfully preparing for the future. In this case study, the public airing of the otherwise silenced acknowledgement of the authors' perceived deficiencies and failures illuminates processes of biopower (the subject-based regulation and disciplining of bodies) embedded within the Korean nation-state building project. I explore how the Neo-Confucian principles of reverence, obedience, and self-cultivation work together with the neoliberal, post-industrial consumerist …

We review the literature on gamification and identify principles of gamification and system design elements for gamifying computer educational games. Gamification of education is expected to increase learners’ engagement, which in turn increases learning achievement. We propose a gamification framework that synthesizes findings from the literature. The gamification framework is comprised of principles of gamification, system design elements for gamification, and dimensions of user engagement.
Resolving Inner Cultural Conflicts Toward Education In Pastoral East Africa: A Grounded Theory Study, Timothy A. Keiper, Janvier Rugira
Resolving Inner Cultural Conflicts Toward Education In Pastoral East Africa: A Grounded Theory Study, Timothy A. Keiper, Janvier Rugira
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explain the perceptions of semi - nomadic pastoralists in East Africa, who self - identified as having the characteristics of the most vulnerable, and who were educationally successful. This study identified motivating factors that contributed to resiliency while in the pursuit of an education. Findings suggest that even though students from this background utilize these motivating factors they are still faced with inner cultural tensions that can be insurmountable. Emergent theory suggests that inner cultural conflicts toward education are resolved when push/pull factors were combined with a sense of something beyond …
Against Agnosticism: Why The Liberal State Isn't Just One (Authority) Among The Many, Linda C. Mcclain
Against Agnosticism: Why The Liberal State Isn't Just One (Authority) Among The Many, Linda C. Mcclain
Faculty Scholarship
This article takes up the gauntlet thrown down by Professor Abner Greene’s recent book, Against Obligation: The Multiple Sources of Authority in a Liberal Democracy, to those scholars, politicians, and activists who believe that realizing the ideal of e pluribus unum (out of many, one) as well as constitutional principles of liberty and equality require a robust role for government. Government, Greene argues, is just one source of authority among many others, and citizens – or even public officials – have no general moral duty to obey the law. The political and constitutional order of the United States, he contends, …

Exploring Colour And Light As Dynamic Elements Of Space Through The Activities Of An International Workshop, Nada El-Khoury, Tiiu Poldma
Learn X Design Conference Series
The ephemeral qualities of lighting are explored best as part of lived experiences. For students at the baccalaureate level, this is difficult and requires developing ideas that become realized through modelling by studying what happens when light, colour and material intersect with form. This process uses design thinking and hands-on experiences to show students how a dynamic interplay of design elements within a project occurs through learning and discussion. While creative processes require some form of abstract thinking and when ephemeral qualities aspects of light and colour contribute to the purpose for a particular use, the material aspects of a …

Forward Thinking : Three Forward, Two Back : What Are The Next Steps?, Gerald K. White
Digital learning research
The use of digital technologies and digital media in teaching, learning and leadership in education has gradually gained momentum since the 1980s, when personal computers first became popular. The resultant media hype and educational posturing by technology evangelists were given a boost with the take up of the World Wide Web in the early 1990s. And significant investment followed nationally and internationally. So what have we learnt in that time about using technology for teaching, learning and educational leadership? What will be the challenges for successfully using digital technologies in education in the next five years?
This address briefly traverses …

Factors Affecting Elementary Teachers’ Decision To Integrate Information And Communication Technologies (Ict) In An Egyptian International School, Shaimaa Mohamed Hafez
Theses and Dissertations
Integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a desired educational outcome. Schools invest substantially in technological hardware and software as well as teacher training to encourage ICT integration. However, the results often do not match the investment. The current case study examined the factors that affect elementary teachers’ decision, in an Egyptian international school, to integrate ICT in education with the aim of using the results to inform future ICT related decisions, policies and practices at this particular school. Using a modified form of participatory evaluation (Cousins & Whitmore, 1998; Zukoski & Luluquisen, 2002) and Wagner’s and Kegan’s 4 C’s …

This essay draws on writings in education, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and social work to articulate values for educational practice. It looks at individual development, relationship, and art as three fundamental areas of quality experience and education. Within and across these arenas, three themes repeatedly surface: attention, critical mindedness, and the balance of process and product.
Whose Streets? Our Streets!: Identity, Institutions, And Privilege In Student Activism, Christina Limpert
Whose Streets? Our Streets!: Identity, Institutions, And Privilege In Student Activism, Christina Limpert
Cultural Foundations of Education - Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation is a qualitative ethnography of college student activism that examines student activist identity, and the role of social structures and privilege in activism. The study uses data from two years of in-depth fieldwork including over 18 months of participant observation and interviews with 13 key respondents. I took on this research project to better understand how students come to think of themselves as activists, how they speak about and experience activism, how activism--as a cultural text--tells a story about power and privilege, and to explore the role of education in the culture of activism. In this dissertation I …

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) in Washington State has adopted Common Core Standards. The reading curriculum given to teachers most often reflects the appropriate grade level materials, but does not necessarily meet common core standards, engage students in learning, or prepare students to pass the end of year exams. In this study, engaging classroom literacy activities will be developed and aligned with learning targets associated with common core standards for sixth grade students. A variety of materials will be used for activities to include: novel sets, picture books, social studies curriculum, and additional teacher resources. It …
Learning Experiences And Perspective Transformation In Evangelical Faith-Based Adult Nonformal Education Programs, Philip Gerke
Learning Experiences And Perspective Transformation In Evangelical Faith-Based Adult Nonformal Education Programs, Philip Gerke
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The study adapted an existing instrument to examine perspective transformation and its associated factors in participants of evangelical faith-based adult nonformal education in the Midwestern United States. Stratified random one-stage cluster sampling of 11 churches produced a nonprobability sample (N = 597) that was significantly (p < .05) different from the population of the geographical location of the study. An 86% majority self-reported a level of agreement or stronger of perceived transformation of perspectives, but differences predicted by gender were insignificant. The difference in perceived perspective transformations between respondents aged 40-59 that had the highest levels and respondents aged 60 and above that had the lowest levels was significant. The factors of influential individuals, personal reflection, and thought-provoking learning assignments significantly predicted all four factors of perspective transformation; the Writing Assignment factor was a significant negative predictor of only the Perception of Change factor, and a significant positive predictor of only the Future Benefits factor. The study recommended that additional research on faith-based frames of reference and age category differences. The study also recommended that faith-based practitioners consider emphasizing transformative learning experiences and personal reflection in their programs for adults.

Dialogue As A Tool For Meaning Making, Angela Suzanne Dudley Bruni
Dialogue As A Tool For Meaning Making, Angela Suzanne Dudley Bruni
Dissertations
In order to empower citizens to analyze the effects, risk, and value of science, a knowledge of scientific concepts is necessary (Mejlgaard, 2009). The formal educational system plays a role in this endeavor (Gil-Perez & Vilches, 2005). One proposed constructivist practice is the use of social learning activities using verbalized, shared cognition among learners. In an effort to investigate the effects of verbally shared cognition, this project sought to determine if social learning opportunities affect the mastery of content in gateway biology courses and to identify the types of dialogue students engage in during cognitive collaboration. Fifty-seven students enrolled in …
Bullying Prevention And Boyhood, Katharine B. Silbaugh
Bullying Prevention And Boyhood, Katharine B. Silbaugh
Faculty Scholarship
A desire to reduce bullying in schools and to create safer and healthier school cultures has driven an anti-bullying movement characterized by significant reform in school programs and practices, as well as legislative reform and policy articulation in every state. A desire to improve school outcomes for boys has generated a number of programmatic proposals and responses in public and private education. Most notably, single-sex programming in public schools has been facilitated by the 2006 change to Title IX regulations setting out the criteria for permissible single-sex public school programs. These two recent movements in K-12 schooling spring from new …
