An Evaluation Of Threonine And Isoleucine As The Third And Fourth Limiting Amino Acids In Corn For Growing Swine, D. A. Grosbach, A. J. Lewis, E. R. Peo, Jr. Jan 1985

An Evaluation Of Threonine And Isoleucine As The Third And Fourth Limiting Amino Acids In Corn For Growing Swine, D. A. Grosbach, A. J. Lewis, E. R. Peo, Jr.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A metabolism experiment and two growth experiments were conducted to determine if threonine and isoleucine are the third and fourth limiting amino acids in corn for growing swine. In each experiment there were four dietary treatments. The basal diet contained corn fortified with minerals, vitamins, lysine and tryptophan. Threonine additions of 0 or .17% and isoleucine additions of 0 or .22% of the diet were evaluated in a 2 • 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The addition of threonine reduced (P<.001) the daily urinary excretion of urea N and total N. There was a tendency for urea N excretion to be reduced further when isoleucine was added in combination with threonine.

Dietary, Cognitive, And Behavioral Variables As Predictors Of Weight Loss Maintenance, Lorisa. Pearce-Lewis Jan 1985

Dietary, Cognitive, And Behavioral Variables As Predictors Of Weight Loss Maintenance, Lorisa. Pearce-Lewis

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is a very complex problem involving dietary, psychological, social, and behavioral factors. Although behavioral treatment for obesity has been found to be effective for weight loss during treatment, results of studies to date on the prediction of long-term weight loss maintenance have been mixed and inconsistent. This study was conducted as a follow-up to a behavioral study by Zegman (1983) in an attempt to identify potential predictors of short- and long-term weight loss. Dietary, cognitive, and behavioral variables were examined by multiple regression analyses as possible predictors of short- and long-term weight loss were identified. Methodological questions were raised …

The Derivation And Validation Of A Workable Food Listing System For Use In Evaluation Of Food Consumption, Georgia C. Lauritzen May 1982

The Derivation And Validation Of A Workable Food Listing System For Use In Evaluation Of Food Consumption, Georgia C. Lauritzen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three separate food grouping systems were derived for diet evaluation by utilizing a computer clustering program. System 1 was based on grouping of foods according to nutrient quality and quantity, system 2 was based on nutrient quality and frequency of consumption and system 3 was based on nutrient quality and kilocalories consumed. Defendable nutritional principles as well as knowledge of present nutritional concerns and eating habits of the U.S. population underpinned the derivation of the three systems. Over 4,000 individual foods were condensed to approximately 325 groups.

The three food grouping systems which were developed were compared for accuracy by …

G80-489 Feeding The Beef Cow Herd--Part I Factors Affecting The Cow Nutrition Program, Richard J. Rasby, Ivan G. Rush Jan 1980

G80-489 Feeding The Beef Cow Herd--Part I Factors Affecting The Cow Nutrition Program, Richard J. Rasby, Ivan G. Rush

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Considerations for getting the most from your beef cow herd are covered in this NebGuide, including calving season, factors affecting nutrient requirements, cow rations and more.

Feed costs are the greatest expense in keeping a cow herd, and the nutrition program dictates reproductive performance. The ultimate goal for a cow/calf manager is to keep feed costs low, but still meet the nutrient requirements of the cow herd so reproductive performance is not impaired. Once these two factors are balanced, producers, through new genetics of added growth or milk production, can match increased weaning weight with the most economical feed resources …

Nutrition And The Primary School Child, Andrew P. Hills Jan 1980

Nutrition And The Primary School Child, Andrew P. Hills

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

With a greater range of foodstuffs available today, it is necessary to educate children in choosing the correct foods to eat, and why they should eat them in preference to others. The concept of nutrition is related closely to the growth and well being of the child and subsequently should be an important part of a child's primary school education.

G79-476 Composition Of Feeds In Relation To Cattle Nutrition, Paul Q. Guyer, Foster G. Owen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide examines the major nutritional components of cattle feed. Plants serve as the major source of feed for livestock. Nutrients required for maintenance and production are provided by various plants and plant derived feeds along with small amounts from non-plant sources. The major constituents of plants are water, carbohydrates, protein, fat, minerals and vitamins. Both plants and animals contain these nutrients, but the relative proportions vary more in plants.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The biweekly diets of tame elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) were established on a species dry-weight basis for different habitat segments of the lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) type, Principal species in the diets (5% or more) on each habitat segment were generally composed of preferred species. However, some highly abundant but non-preferred species took on principal dietary status, whereas some preferred species, scarce in the vegetation, contributed less than 5 percent to diets. Forbs contributed most to total consumption; grasses and sedges were the second largest contributors. Browse appeared to be of limited importance, but mushrooms had …

G77-350 Mineral Nutrition Of Range Beef Cattle, Marvin W. Heeney

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Minerals play a very important role in the well-being of the range beef herd. Minerals are essential for practically all of the metabolic functions of the beef animals. Minerals are classified as 1) major and 2) minor or trace. The major minerals include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chlorine and sulfur. The trace minerals include copper, cobalt, iodine, iron, manganese and zinc.

Each mineral is discussed here in terms of its function, deficiency symptoms and availability in the range beef cattle diet.

G77-386 Wheat In Poultry Rations, T.W. Sullivan, E.W. Gleaves Jan 1977

G77-386 Wheat In Poultry Rations, T.W. Sullivan, E.W. Gleaves

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication examines the advantages and disadvantages of wheat as a component of poultry feed.

Wheat is usually considered a source of human food rather than an ingredient for poultry and livestock feeds. This is especially true in the United States, where corn, milo and other feed grains are abundantly produced. In recent years one of every two bushels of wheat produced in the United States has been exported. If world production and supplies of wheat are high, a surplus develops and wheat prices are lowered. When this situation occurs wheat becomes an attractive alternative to corn or milo in …

Effect Of Diet Levels Of Leucine, Isoleucine And Valine On Chick Growth Rate, Naiyana Nakhata May 1975

Effect Of Diet Levels Of Leucine, Isoleucine And Valine On Chick Growth Rate, Naiyana Nakhata

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chick feeding tests were conducted to study the effects of dietary imbalances among the three branched chain amino acids on growth rate. All diets fed in these tests contained about 18% protein. The indispensable amino acids (IAA) were found in two of the diets fed in the proportions found by Dobson et al. (1964) to be well balanced. One of the diets had all IAA at 85% of these balanced levels while the other had them all at 125% of these levels. The tests involved reducing the isoleucine, leucine and valine levels in the high IAA diet to the low …
