A Data-Driven Approach To Predict Carbohydrate Counting Errors In Diabetes Management, Sahaj Shah Jun 2021

A Data-Driven Approach To Predict Carbohydrate Counting Errors In Diabetes Management, Sahaj Shah

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Carbohydrate counting, which refers to estimating the carbohydrate content in meals, is critical for determining mealtime insulin doses and maintaining healthy blood glucose levels in persons with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, carbohydrate counting errors (i.e., over-or under-estimation of carbohydrate intake) are very common amongst patients and are often a source of poor glycemic control. Fortunately, the prevalence of personal health data from wearable medical devices like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pumps provide unique opportunities for understanding and predicting health management outcomes. In this study, we use adverse glycemic events following meal intakes as a proxy for identifying …

Feasibility And Acceptability Of Using Mobile Health Apps In Underserved Patients With Diabetes, Jieyu Luo

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction. Diabetes mellitus is a condition with a growing morbidity and mortality burden. An estimated 30 million adults currently live with diabetes, with each individual spending over $9500 annually on medical care. The successful management of diabetes is a lifelong endeavor. This involves balancing a variety of factors including diet, medications, and glucose monitoring. It has been well established that successful control of diabetes depends largely upon patients’ daily lifestyle habits and activities. Not all patients, however, have the resources necessary for effective diabetes management. Health disparities lead to a higher rate of diabetes development in minority and poor populations. …

Impact Of Diabetes Self-Management Education On Adults With Diabetes And Mental Illness, Brooke Tullis

Dissertations

Approximately 9.4% of the population of the United States, or 30.3 million Americans, has diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death and places a significant financial strain on the healthcare system with approximately $327 billion in estimated expenditures. In Ohio, 13.5% of the population has diabetes, which represents a 4.1% increase above the national average. Additionally, individuals with mental illness are at an increased risk for diabetes due to lower self-efficacy and limited performance of self-care activities compared to the general population. This results in poor glycemic control and leads to an increased risk for diabetes complications. …

The Emerging Role Of Pancreatic Β-Cell Primary Cilia In Diabetes Mellitus, Emily Blackburn Apr 2021

The Emerging Role Of Pancreatic Β-Cell Primary Cilia In Diabetes Mellitus, Emily Blackburn

Honors Scholar Theses

Diabetes mellitus is prevalent in America, affecting more than 10% of the population. The underlying cause of the disease are diverse and can be related to genes, environment and physical inactivity. This review investigates how a minute cellular organelle called primary cilium, found in pancreatic β-cells, affects the development and the function of the pancreas. Gene mutations related to primary cilia can lead to malfunctions or loss of the structure, and cause diseases collectively classified as ciliopathies. Recent studies of two types of ciliopathies, Alstrom’s Syndrome and Bardet–Biedl Syndrome, connect the primary cilium defects with insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells. …

Lesion or disease of the somatosensory system leads to the development of neuropathic pain. Peripheral neuropathic pain encompasses damage or injury of the peripheral nervous system. On the other hand, 10–15% of individuals suffer from acute postoperative pain followed by persistent pain after undergoing surgeries. Antidepressants, anticonvulsants, baclofen, and clonidine are used to treat peripheral neuropathy, whereas opioids are used to treat postoperative pain. The negative effects associated with these drugs emphasize the search for alternative therapeutics with better efficacy and fewer side effects. Curcumin, a polyphenol isolated from the roots of Curcuma longa, possesses antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. …

We evaluated the potential for a monoclonal antibody antagonist of the glucagon receptor (Ab-4) to maintain glucose homeostasis in type 1 diabetic rodents. We noted durable and sustained improvements in glycemia which persist long after treatment withdrawal. Ab-4 promoted β-cell survival and enhanced the recovery of insulin+ islet mass with concomitant increases in circulating insulin and C peptide. In PANIC-ATTAC mice, an inducible model of β-cell apoptosis which allows for robust assessment of β-cell regeneration following caspase-8–induced diabetes, Ab-4 drove a 6.7-fold increase in β-cell mass. Lineage tracing suggests that this restoration of functional insulin-producing cells was at least partially …
