The Relationship Between Perceived Self-Efficacy, Regimen Adherence, And Glycemic Control In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilot Study, Antonieta Pelias Alteza
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This pilot study examined the relationship between perceived self-efficacy and regimen adherence on glycemic control among adolescents, aged 11 to 18 years, with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Thirty-six adolescent-parent dyads participated in this study. Bivariate analysis using Pearson product moment-correlations identified no significant relationships among the variables. Regarding treatment regimen, adolescents on insulin pumps had a mean glycosylated hemoglobin level of 8.09% whereas adolescents on daily insulin injections had a mean glycosylated hemoglobin level of 9.26%. Bandura's theory of self-efficacy provided the theoretical framework for this study. The Self-Efficacy for Diabetes scale and Questionnaire of Self-Care Behaviors scale were used …

The Social Welfare Of Advertising To Children, Dennis D. Crouch
The Social Welfare Of Advertising To Children, Dennis D. Crouch
Faculty Publications
The aim of this Comment is to approach the issue of advertising to children through an examination of economic incentives and efficiency. The Comment ultimately makes the claim that televised advertisement of products, such as junk food, directed toward children may be inefficient and tend to decrease social welfare. Although they may be compelling, this paper does not rely on the secondary negative externalities often associated with television, such as the cost of treating diabetes and heart disease. Rather, the inefficiency discussed in the Comment involves the informational qualities of advertising. Advertising directed towards young children can be thought of …

An Examinaton Of The Enhanced Primary Care Model For The Organization Of Team Care In Managing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In The Elderly Population, Carolyn Morcom Rutledge
Health Services Research Dissertations
The healthcare system is faced with overwhelming demands as a result of the growing elderly population, especially those with chronic illnesses. One disease that significantly impacts the morbidity and mortality of the elderly population, especially the minority and poor population, is type 2 diabetes. This population often lacks access to resources and quality healthcare that may be due to inadequate knowledge by the patients and their healthcare providers regarding available services. Current models of healthcare have not been effective in meeting the healthcare demands of this population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Enhanced …

An Outcomes Study Of Diabetes Education, Tara Lynn Mcgill
An Outcomes Study Of Diabetes Education, Tara Lynn Mcgill
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a twelve-hour diabetic education program on self-care behaviors and level of integration of diabetes in patients with type 1 & type 2 diabetes. Using the Theory of Integration (Hernandez, 1995) as the study's conceptual framework, an outcomes study was conducted. Thirty-five questionnaires were distributed to subjects at the initial class of the diabetes education program, with 22 being able to be utilized for analysis; The results of this study showed that there was a significant increase in the level of integration of diabetes (t(21) = 2.998, p < .005). When individual statements of integration were assessed, three areas were found to have a significant increase. These included, understanding how diabetes affects one's body by living with diabetes (t(21) = 2.890, p < .005), being aware of bodily cues that distinguish blood glucose levels (t(21) = 2.822, p < .005), and knowing more about taking care of one's diabetes more than anyone (t(21) = 3.044, p < .005); Analysis of individual statements of self-care behavior included significant changes in eating the foods according to a diabetes meal plan (t(22) = 2.802, p < .005), eating snacks at the right time of day (t(21) = 3.049, p < .005), knowing how to treat a hypoglycemic reaction (t(22) 3.323, p < .005) and carrying a sugar source to treat those hypoglycemic reactions (t(22) = 3.045, p < .005). Significant increases were also noted in the logging of blood glucose results (t(22) = 3.239, p < .005), and in obtaining the amount of exercise needed for diabetes (t(22) = 3.023, p < .005). This study is an important initial evaluation of the effects of a diabetes education program on diabetes patients' selfcare behaviors and level of integration.

The Use And Effectiveness Of Coping Mechanisms In Parents Of Children With Type 1 Diabetes, J. Shelley Dornan
MSN Research Projects
Coping with the responsibility of raising a child with diabetes is a serious challenge for parents. The methods parents use to cope can influence the child's future outcome. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the use and effectiveness of coping mechanisms among parents of children with Type 1 diabetes. A convenience sample of 4 0 parents with a diabetic child was obtained from a diabetic support group and a pediatric endocrinology clinic in the Southeastern United States. Data were collected using the Jalowiec Coping Scale and the researcher-designed Demographic Survey. Analysis of data was conducted using …
Demographics At Diagnosis Of Children With Type 2 Diabetes, Marcia Fleming Hammett
Demographics At Diagnosis Of Children With Type 2 Diabetes, Marcia Fleming Hammett
MSN Research Projects
Since 1991 the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes in children has increased at an alarming rate. Researchers have identified some common descriptors which may be predictive of early assessment and intervention for this population. Further validation of established descriptors and identification of other descriptors are needed. In this retrospective descriptive study, one research question guided the study: What are the demographic characteristics of children with Type 2 diabetes at the time of diagnosis? The Neuman Systems Model (198 9) provided the theoretical framework. Data were collected using the Hammett Chart Survey with 3 9 review variables. Charts from three endocrinology …

Impact Of A Multidisciplinary Education Class On Knowledge And Health-Promoting Behaviors In Persons With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Rural Mississippi, Carmen Leigh Parks
MSN Research Projects
Prevalence rates of known diabetes mellitus continue to increase in the United States. However, studies show that people can reduce their risks of long-term complications by maintaining adequate blood sugar control. Good metabolic control, however, can be very difficult for persons with diabetes because it requires knowledge, motivation, lifestyle adjustments, close monitoring, and ongoing support from a health care team. The purpose of this quasi-experimental pretest/posttest study was to determine the impact of a multidisciplinary education class on knowledge and health-promoting behaviors in persons with type 2 diabetes in rural Mississippi. Pender's Health Promotion Model was used as the theoretical …

Diet Adherence Factors Affecting Diabetic Older Adults, Laurie Schluter
MSN Research Projects
Diabetes is a chronic disease which affects a significant portion of the United States population. Effective management requires adherence to a prescribed dietary regimen. Many diabetics have difficulty adhering to their recommended diet. This descriptive study explored diabetic diet adherence in older adults. The following research question guided the study: What are the factors that affect diabetic diet adherence in older adults? Sr. Callista Roy's adaptation theory provided direction for the study. Thirty two diabetic patients age 45 years and older in Louisiana comprised the sample. The sample included rural and urban patients of a home health agency and a …

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common chronic disease that is thought to have a substantial genetic basis. Identification of the genes responsible has been hampered by the complex nature of the syndrome. Abnormalities in insulin secretion and insulin action predict the development of type 2 diabetes and are, themselves, highly heritable traits. Since fewer genes may contribute to these precursors of type 2 diabetes than to the overall syndrome, such genes may be easier to identify. We, therefore, undertook an autosomal genomic scan to identify loci linked to prediabetic traits in Pima Indians, a population with a high prevalence …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of time on taste threshold was examined in 30 diabetics and 30 control subjects (ages 22-30) who had participated in a sensory study 14 years previously. Detection and recognition taste thresholds for sweet (sucrose), salty (sodium chloride), sour (citric acid), and bitter (quinine sulfate) were assessed using triangle testing. Food preferences related to concentration of the stimuli in model food systems were tested using a nine-point hedonic scale. Mashed potatoes were used as the carrier for different levels of salt. A beverage composed of water, sucrose, and citric acid was varied to measure preferences for sweet and sour …
