The Metroburb: American Values In Facebook Culture, Heather Marie Carlson
The Metroburb: American Values In Facebook Culture, Heather Marie Carlson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Using critical discourse analysis, fantasy themes were extracted from user profiles and postings to examine American values found in Facebook culture.
Core values found on Facebook worked to create not only socially recognizable identities enacted and communicated through the participants, but also a particular culture to which participants both reflected and contributed in Facebook. Themes and values extracted from findings indicate that Facebook users should be casual, technologically-aware, social, respectful and fair to others, “good little copers,” financially savvy while at the same time valuing higher education, a healthy lifestyle, family and travel.
Because Facebook is an interestingly fluid cultural …
Glocalization In Macedonia: English In Outdoor Advertising Messages, Pamela Morris
Glocalization In Macedonia: English In Outdoor Advertising Messages, Pamela Morris
School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Outdoor advertising visuals from Skopje, Macedonia are analyzed in a content analysis. Images were photographed in the most heavily traveled areas of the city to secure a snapshot of culture and to analyze western influence. Media and linguistic imperialism, globalization and glocalization, along with advertising and communication strategies, are used to frame the investigation. Findings show that media companies are the leading advertisers, along with banks and entertainment. The majority of ads employed some form of English, although Macedonian and Cyrillic writing were also used. The images revealed strategic use of language and symbols, depending on the product category, business …
Reasoning In A Multicultural Society, Donny Gahral Adian
Reasoning In A Multicultural Society, Donny Gahral Adian
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Multicultural society as a way of being-with-others needs a certain form of public reasoning. Unfortunately, the current yet dominant form of public reasoning is infiltrated by biases from occidental culture. This mode of reasoning does nothing but uproot participants from their cultural identity for the sake of universal consensus. Multicultural society, however, consists of identities which are embedded in the individuals' cultural tradition. This sociological fact demands a richer form of rationality that does not deny the multiplicity of cultural values and embedded identities. We need a form of public reasoning which emphasizes cultural understanding rather than abstract consensus. We …
Speech Genres And Identity: The Place Of Adda In Bengali Cultural Discourse, Debarati Sen
Speech Genres And Identity: The Place Of Adda In Bengali Cultural Discourse, Debarati Sen
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
This paper explores the dialectic between speech genres and group identity. It argues that certain ideologies get associated with speech genres, like adda, which inextricably link them to particular groups and situations. Adda is a kind of informal social talk in Bengali, among friends and colleagues, but its content is always of intellectual significance, addressing issues such as local/global politics, art, literature, and music. Casual conversations and gossip are common in many societies, but the creative performance of this genre by Bengali elites made adda a marker of an urban middle-class identity, especially in response to British Imperialism. Currently in …
Cultural Competence In Transnational Settings & Quality Education For American Indians: Anatomy Of Challenges, Kay Traille, Brittani K. Roy
Cultural Competence In Transnational Settings & Quality Education For American Indians: Anatomy Of Challenges, Kay Traille, Brittani K. Roy
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
This article juxtaposes the lived experiences of two educators newly immersed in very different work environments. One of the educators, one coming from a British education background, looks at the anomalies of communication, work practice, and student expectations at a university located in the southern United States. The second educator, working in a K-12 school system on an American-Indian reservation in Arizona, looks at the challenges of NCLB, ELL, curricula, assessment methods, dropout rates, and funding. Upon examination of the issues of a quality and fair education for American Indians, it becomes clear that teachers have to bring an existential-phenomenological …
Racial/Ethnic Matching Of Clients And Therapists In Mental Health Services: A Meta-Analytic Review Of Preferences, Perceptions, And Outcomes, Timothy B. Smith, Raquel R. Cabral
Racial/Ethnic Matching Of Clients And Therapists In Mental Health Services: A Meta-Analytic Review Of Preferences, Perceptions, And Outcomes, Timothy B. Smith, Raquel R. Cabral
Faculty Publications
The effects of matching clients with therapists of the same race/ethnicity have been explored using a variety of approaches across several decades. We conducted a meta-analysis of three variables frequently used in research on racial/ethnic matching: Clients' preferences for a therapist of their own race/ethnicity, clients' perceptions of therapists, and therapeutic outcomes. Across 52 studies of preferences, the average effect size was d = .63, indicating a moderately strong preference for a therapist of one's own race/ethnicity. Across 81 studies of individuals' perceptions of therapists, the average effect size was d = .32, indicating a tendency to perceive therapists of …
Culturally Sensitive Document Design For An Eastern Asia Audience: Comprehension And Preference, Merridith Smith
Culturally Sensitive Document Design For An Eastern Asia Audience: Comprehension And Preference, Merridith Smith
Theses
An investigation into Eastern Asia audiences in China, Japan, and Korea determined how intercultural communication affects non-native readers' comprehension and perception of a document design. The study, an after-only experiment, used a small-sized sample from people who were In-Country Reviewers (ICRs) and knew of medical products in Eastern Asia and had knowledge in the area's local language. The subjects read an indigenously or non-indigenously designed document, and self-reported their comprehension and preferences for formatting style. Although the statistics showed no significant difference between the groups, on any variable tested (language, comprehension, and format), the qualitative data that were gathered can …
The Holistic Complementary Structure Of Western Bio-Medicine And Traditional Healing And Achieving Complete Health, Candace Gail Oubre
The Holistic Complementary Structure Of Western Bio-Medicine And Traditional Healing And Achieving Complete Health, Candace Gail Oubre
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Achieving complete health requires a deep understanding of complementary cultural competency sensitivity between physician and patient. This may include but is not limited to access to preventative health care resources, access to health educational resources and access to cultural healing resources, for example, shamans, Ayurvedic physicians, and herbal healers. Advocates of cultural competency emphasize great importance on knowledge of the patients' cultural background; however, the transcendence of this knowledge can be explained further through complementary cultural competency sensitivity. This is when the cultures of the physician and patient complement each other in terms of understanding what is in the patients' …
Re-Visioning The Semantic And Semiotic Registers In The Study Of Culture And Religion, Gary S. Bedford
Re-Visioning The Semantic And Semiotic Registers In The Study Of Culture And Religion, Gary S. Bedford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term `God' may be understood as the desire for the complete epistemological condition of thought; language expresses this condition in statements of `meaning.' `Religion' expresses this desire in texts and ritual practice which may be examined by in academic study; however, because the `third term' of religio is understood as the condition of being `bounded to or by,' the study of religion is itself bounded to or by this desire for the completion of thought. This desire cannot be understood as an `alterity' of thought but is rather the internal native or `alter-native' condition of thought itself. …
Early Childhood Bilingualism Leads To Advances In Executive Attention: Dissociating Culture And Language, Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Barbara Lust
Early Childhood Bilingualism Leads To Advances In Executive Attention: Dissociating Culture And Language, Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Barbara Lust
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This study investigated whether early especially efficient utilization of executive functioning in young bilinguals would transcend potential cultural benefits. To dissociate potential cultural effects from bilingualism, four-year-old U.S. Korean-English bilingual children were compared to three monolingual groups – English and Korean monolinguals in the U.S.A. and another Korean monolingual group, in Korea. Overall, bilinguals were most accurate and fastest among all groups. The bilingual advantage was stronger than that of culture in the speed of attention processing, inverse processing efficiency independent of possible speed-accuracy trade-offs, and the network of executive control for conflict resolution. A culture advantage favoring Korean monolinguals …
The words novel, drama and poetry can be translated because they refer to well-known specific concepts. Words referring to endogenous or indigenous forms and norms with cultural codes unknown to us cannot be translated. The translation of these words does not provide much information about them. The word koteba in bambara, a language spoken in Mali, means “a big snail”. The word hainteny (science of speech in Malagasy) refers to a specific type of popular oral poetry. What does the word concert-party (used in Nigeria, Ghana, Togo) or the Swahili word manganja mean? An analysis of these endogenous genres with …
Culture And The Classroom: Teachers' Perspectives Of Ethnic And Racial Culture In The Middle School Classroom, Rachel E. Heide
Culture And The Classroom: Teachers' Perspectives Of Ethnic And Racial Culture In The Middle School Classroom, Rachel E. Heide
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Public education has experienced an unprecedented growth of diversity within the student population and accompanying that growth are inequities that are present in our schools and communities. Many school teachers and administrators have a limited awareness of how their own class, gender, and race impact their work, and often, do not see how their views about others' class, gender, and race help to reproduce the social hierarchy. These limited or uneducated views may also contribute to the achievement gap that exists between students belonging to the minority and non-minority groups.
It is important to study these views and ask whether …
The Case For Cultural Genocide: The Formulation Of A Working Definition, Tye Tavaras
The Case For Cultural Genocide: The Formulation Of A Working Definition, Tye Tavaras
Theses and Dissertations
The Genocide Convention is hailed as a great protection mechanism and the one document that will prevent future destruction of groups. This convention however, has a variety of shortcomings that fail to protect groups outside of attempted physical destruction. An article criminalizing cultural genocide is a devastating omission and this paper seeks to create a working legal definition to be used a framework for creating an article or convention to provide such criminalization. Beginning with an analysis of the drafting of the Genocide Convention with particular attention paid to the importance of culture in the foundation of the convention as …
Cognitive Relatives Yet Moral Strangers?, Judith Benz-Scharzberg, Andrew Knight
Cognitive Relatives Yet Moral Strangers?, Judith Benz-Scharzberg, Andrew Knight
Animal Welfare Collection
This article provides an empirically based, interdisciplinary approach to the following two questions: Do animals possess behavioral and cognitive characteristics such as culture, language, and a theory of mind? And if so, what are the implications, when long-standing criteria used to justify differences in moral consideration between humans and animals are no longer considered indisputable? One basic implication is that the psychological needs of captive animals should be adequately catered for. However, for species such as great apes and dolphins with whom we share major characteristics of personhood, welfare considerations alone may not suffice, and consideration of basic rights may …

Purple Haze, Clare Huntington
Purple Haze, Clare Huntington
Michigan Law Review
It takes only a glance at the headlines every political season-with battles over issues ranging from abortion and abstinence-only education to same-sex marriage and single parenthood-to see that the culture wars have become a fixed feature of the American political landscape. The real puzzle is why these divides continue to resonate so powerfully. In Red Families v. Blue Families: Legal Polarization and the Creation of Culture, Naomi Cahn and June Carbone offer an ambitious addition to our understanding of this puzzle, illustrating pointedly why it is so hard to talk across the political divide. In a telling anecdote in the …

This research examines the culture of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Participants consisted of four leaders and five residents, all long-term citizens of Ypsilanti. Participants were interviewed and first asked to describe the general culture of Ypsilanti, then asked to comment on the potential presence of a music and arts scene as part of the culture of Ypsilanti. These questions are research questions one and two, respectively. Participants were recruited through word-of-mouth as people heard about the research through people I know. A content analysis of the interviews was conducted to find conceptual patterns in participants’ descriptions of the general culture as well …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is an account of the literacy-related human environment a Chinese girl experienced as the first person in the history of her family who was able to read prior to entry into elementary school. Temporally speaking, the study spanned more than a decade from the initial, tentative research question to the formal, primary research question. Spatially speaking, it crossed three cultures: the Chinese, Korean, and American cultures. The study was inspired by the Zero Project in China, known as the "Project of Quality Education and Implementation for Children Aged Zero (fetus) to Six." The significance of the content issue …
Culturally-Responsive Dance: Building Community One Step At A Time, Jeanette Jackson
Culturally-Responsive Dance: Building Community One Step At A Time, Jeanette Jackson
ETD Archive
James Catterall's, (1997) report, "Involvement in the Arts and Success in Secondary School", espoused the need for Arts Education. Finding that students who were involved in the arts had increased motivation, school attendance, and positive attitudes, this longitudinal study became a national model of Arts Education advocacy. Landson Billings (1995) assertion that culturally-relevant pedagogy is a pillar for student success is but a further expansion of Ogbu (1987) which stated that "A culturally relevant pedagogy must provide a way for students to maintain their cultural identity while succeeding academically" (p. 155).Although the academic world has reflected and responded to the …
'Race', Nation And Belonging In Ireland, Jonathan Mitchell
'Race', Nation And Belonging In Ireland, Jonathan Mitchell
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Despite consistent efforts to counteract those attitudes and practices that give rise to it, most putatively modern Western nations continue to experience the concrete effects of racial discrimination. This essay argues that nationality is all too easily conflated with ‘race’ or ethnicity, such that a seeming essence or givenness is manifested amongst all those within a particular geographic boundary. It is suggested that on the contrary, there is nothing natural about nationality as commonly understood; this being so, it must be continually shored up and reconstituted through social, linguistic and material practices. For modern nations in the West, this has …
Models, Scientific Realism, The Intelligibility Of Nature, And Their Cultural Significance, M.H.S. Abdul Murad
Models, Scientific Realism, The Intelligibility Of Nature, And Their Cultural Significance, M.H.S. Abdul Murad
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
In this article, I will view realist and non-realist accounts of scientific models within the larger context of the cultural significance of scientific knowledge. I begin by looking at the historical context and origins of the problem of scientific realism, and claim that it is originally of cultural and not only philosophical, significance. The cultural significance of debates on the epistemological status of scientific models is then related to the question of ‘intelligibility’ and how science, through models, can give us knowledge of the world by presenting us with an ‘intelligible account/picture of the world’, thus fulfilling its cultural-epistemic role. …

Upon their arrival in the United States, International students' interactions with the target language group outside classroom situation constitute one of their biggest social experiences. Their adjustment to their new environment creates some problems. Their experience of adjustment is manifested differently as some may suffer from differences in cultures in relation to the American cultural values, while some may just feel homesick and become lonely. Other may suffer from the loss of their status back home and may not regarded by their American peers as they should be. The paper seeks to understand the complex nature of international students' exposure …
The Attitudes Of African American Students Towards The Study Of Foreign Languages And Cultures, Katrina Watterson
The Attitudes Of African American Students Towards The Study Of Foreign Languages And Cultures, Katrina Watterson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the reasons that African American students participate at lower levels in foreign language programs in terms of taking courses and majoring and minoring in foreign languages. The primary foreign language that it explores is Spanish, and its findings suggest that the introduction of the language devoid of the influence of Afro-diasporic linkages to Spanish culture leads to the topic being taught in abstraction, therefore causing a lack of interest among African American students. As this study shows, a teacher's thinking about cultural and racial difference is often intimately woven into their disciplinary training, and as a result, …

Multiculturalism & Multicultural Education : Where Do Minority Teachers Teaching Minorities Fit?, Jessica Salas
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Upon the abundance of literature pertaining to multiculturalism and multicultural education, there appeared to be a large gap in the research: how do minority teachers teach minority students when in reality, they are both the majority? In an attempt to fill a portion of the gap, a study was conducted at Fremont Elementary in Salinas where not only the teachers and students were predominantly Latino, but the community as well. Key elements for the study consisted of teacher surveys and one-on-one interviews with both students and teachers. Ultimately, a research report filled with the analyzed data was created and presented …
Living Water In Indian Cups: A Call For Cultural Relevance In Contemporary Indian Missions, Prabhusingh Vedhamanickam
Living Water In Indian Cups: A Call For Cultural Relevance In Contemporary Indian Missions, Prabhusingh Vedhamanickam
The Asbury Journal
There has been a concentrated effort in contemporary India to stereotype Christianity as a western agent involved in destroying Indic religions, desecrating Indian cultures and destabilizing the nation. While there have been some attempts to contextualize the gospel in Indian missions, in the theological and missiological realms, there is an urgent need to incarnate the gospel in culturally relevant ways due to three critical factors: The cultural diversity of the nation, the rise of Hindu nationalism and the paradigmatic shift from Indian cross cultural missions to local, indigenous movements. While the multinational companies in India are tailoring their strategies according …

Culture And Metaphors In Advertisements: France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, And The United States, Pamela Morris, Jennifer A. Waldman
School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Culture and language are intertwined. Metaphors, based on culture, are ubiquitous in thinking and communication. As social artifacts reflecting culture, advertising messages provide an opportunity to compare metaphors in different nations. Goals of this article are to understand how and why advertisers use metaphors and how they differ across countries, as well as how cultural characteristics are used to create compelling ad messages. Using a content analysis of 87 French, German, Italian, Dutch, and American magazine advertisements, this study examines metaphor usage and cultural attributes from four culture-bound product groups: food and beverage, automobiles, insurance/finance, and personal care.

Speaking In Thai, Dreaming In Isan: Popular Thai Television And Emerging Identities Of Lao Isan Youth Living In Northeast Thailand, Catherine Hesse-Swain
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This is an ethnographic study of how Lao Isan youth living in the northeastern provincial capital Khon Kaen and nearby town Mahasarakham experience Thainess or khwampenthai in its most popular form – television. People who inhabit the northeast of Thailand interchangeably label themselves and are labelled by others as Isan, Thai Isan, Lao Isan, Thai or Lao, depending on the ethnic, political, social or familial nuances of any given situation. I use the term Lao Isan to refer specifically to Isan people of Lao origin or ethnicity. Lao Isan are subject to complex and often competing notions of Isanness, Laoness …
