The Gospel, The Pastor, And "Culture.", Warren Rubel
The Gospel, The Pastor, And "Culture.", Warren Rubel
Concordia Theological Monthly
Actually the word "culture" continues to evoke an unmanageable number of responses from most of us. So much so that we need to distinguish quickly among a number of ideas clustering around the term in order to place the understandably complex relationships among the Christian gospel, the pastor, and culture in a meaningful if limited perspective. Here, after offering a quick sketch of some of the main currents and crosscurrents surrounding culture today, we attempt to suggest a rough plot for personal action. Our assumption is that the pastor as perpetual "student and literary worker" will fill in the details …
Perspectives In The Behavioral Sciences, Douglas D. Bond
Perspectives In The Behavioral Sciences, Douglas D. Bond
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
It is clear at this moment that we have two major thrusts. The first is the unlocking of the biological secrets surrounding the potential for development and the fixing of learned material in the biological matrix. The second is the careful examination of the culture that will be learned. Here, not only every social scientist but every citizen need be concerned. The present emphasis upon the importance of culture can hardly be exaggerated unless it crowds out our interest in the biological. Man remains an enigma; reason, a personal control of prejudice, and a continuing spirit of disciplined inquiry are …
Naming Practices In South America, John Bregenzer
Naming Practices In South America, John Bregenzer
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
On the basis of previous investigation of modes of address and social structure, this study attempts to show that certain naming practices in South America are related to indicators of a postulated individualism-communalism continuum of the societies. The results suggest a relationship between some naming practices and a continuum based on mean size of the local community.

River Basin Surveys Papers, No. 39: An Interpretation Of Mandan Culture And History, W. Raymond Wood, Smithsonian Institution, Bureau Of American Ethnology
US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations
Published as a series sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology, the “River Basin Surveys Papers” are a collection of archeological investigations focused on areas now flooded by the completion of various dam projects in the United States. The River Basin Surveys Papers (numbered 1-39) were mostly published in bundles, with 5-6 papers in each bundle. In collaboration with the United States (US) National Park Service and the US Bureau of Reclamation, the US Department of the Interior, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Smithsonian Institution pulled archeological and paleontological remains from several sites prior to …
Religion In America And The Church's Use Of Mass Media, Carl Schalk
Religion In America And The Church's Use Of Mass Media, Carl Schalk
Concordia Theological Monthly
There is little doubt that the church today faces a unique opportunity as well as a unique responsibility in communicating the message of God in Christ to man today.
The greatest need is for the churches to listen to what God says to them and through them. Yet the churches have equal responsibility to determine the best ways in which they can pass on to those who do not hear and who do not listen, what they know and believe about their Lord and Savior.
The Relation Of The Concept Of The Function Of The Analytical Psychologist And The Function Of The "Guru" Or Spiritual Guide Of Hinduism, William Swartley
The Relation Of The Concept Of The Function Of The Analytical Psychologist And The Function Of The "Guru" Or Spiritual Guide Of Hinduism, William Swartley
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This paper attempts to relate institutions from two very different cultures. The institution of the analytical psychologist has developed in the Western world in the last sixty years. The institution of the Hindu "guru" or spiritual guide developed in the East several thousand years ago. Yet the two institutions have many similarities once superficial differences have been bridged. First, a modern Western psychologist must admit that psychology is not divided absolutely from philosophy and religion If they are viewed simply as expressions of the human psyche. The view that the science of psychology was only free to develop after it …
Cultural Variations Of Child Rearing Practices Among The Mormons Of Brigham City, Utah, Nile D. Meservy
Cultural Variations Of Child Rearing Practices Among The Mormons Of Brigham City, Utah, Nile D. Meservy
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The family is the basic institution of society. It is within the family that the individual develops his basic points of view and achieves a pattern of adjustment toward life.1
One of the most strategic factors in the family setting, insofar as personality development is concerned, is the parental-child relationship. Although it is evident that this relationship plays a great part in the socialization of the child, much remains to be understood concerning the underlying conditions within the family that affect his relationship.
It is the view of this study that the parent-child relationship varies in nature from family …
Evidences Of Culture Contacts Between Polynesia And The Americas In Precolumbian Times, John L. Sorenson Sr.
Evidences Of Culture Contacts Between Polynesia And The Americas In Precolumbian Times, John L. Sorenson Sr.
Theses and Dissertations
Of the great unsettled problems of archaeology and anthropology perhaps the most hotly debated has been the relative importance of migration, diffusion, and independent invention in the origin of culture elements. The question has obvious importance, both for a proper understanding of man and culture, that ambitiously comprehensive goal of modern anthropology, and for historical reconstruction, the latter a necessary preliminary of the former.
The concern of this thesis is with culture movement in the eastern Pacific Ocean area. The Pacific area as a whole has long been the geographical center of the diffusion problem (if we may so term …
